Law enforcement investigating homicide outside of King City

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, one person was killed in the county area outside King City on Wednesday morning, July 31. Deputies and other law enforcement were paged to the incident after reports of shots were fired at around 5:30 am. The victim has been identified as a male and no other information has been released as the homicide is still under investigation.

Gonzales High School Football player recovering after suffering serious brain injury

Gonzales High School Sophomore Receiver Angel Bravo suffered a serious brain injury as he landed on his head during a 7 on 7 drill that the Football team was taking part in on Saturday, July 27 in Carmel as they prepare for the 2019 season. Spartan Head Football Coach Art Berlanga said that Bravo just unfortunately landed hard on the back of his head on the ground of a grass surface after going up to make a catch during the drill and added that he had seen plays like that many times in all of the years he's played and coached football. Moments later Bravo collapsed and hit his head again between a divider and a long jump pit of the sideline. Bravo was transported to a trauma center at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas where surgery was performed immediately because of internal bleeding and hemmorhaging in his brain. Patricia Hsieh to Succeed Dr. Lewallen as Hartnell College Superintendent

SALINAS, Calif. — The Hartnell Community College District Board of Trustees on Tuesday, July 30 approved an agreement with Dr. Patricia Hsieh, a longtime president of San Diego Miramar College, to succeed Superintendent/President Dr. Willard Lewallen. Following a discussion in closed session, the Governing Board voted 6-1 for a three-year contract with Dr. Hsieh, one of three finalists who visited Hartnell in June for public forums and board interviews. Student Trustee Samantha Saldana also voted yes. The opposing vote was cast by District 5 Trustee Ray Montemayor. Dr. Lewallen, who became superintendent/president in May 2012, announced in January 2019 that he would retire effective Sept. 30. During his seven-year tenure, Hartnell has nearly tripled the number of degrees and certificates it awards, made steep gains in transfers to four-year universities and won voter support for a $167 million bond measure funding new outreach centers and campus modernization, called Measure T.

Hartnell Continues Climb in Degrees and Certificates

SALINAS, Calif. — Continuing a series of annual gains, Hartnell College students earned 13 percent more degrees and certificates this year than last, for a total of 2,449 credentials awarded. Hartnell awarded 1,486 associate degrees during the 2018-19 academic year that ended July 26, compared with 1,314 in 2017-18. Also during 2018-19, the college awarded 963 certificates, for shorter-term study, compared with 851 the year before. Hartnell has nearly tripled its degrees and certificates over the past seven years, while enrollment has held relatively steady, up just 3.7 percent, for a current total of 7,372 full-time equivalent students. The number of credentials awarded by the college has increased by a yearly average of 17 percent since 2011-12, when students earned 578 degrees and 257 certificates. Prescribed Burn Planned for Monterey County

Monterey, CA – CAL FIRE plans to conduct a prescribed burn of 367 acres on private property in the Gabilan Range east of Salinas in Monterey County on Monday, July 29, 2019. The purpose of the project is to reintroduce fire to the ecosystem, thereby reducing hazardous fire fuels by removing brush and downed woody debris, enhancing fire safety. This type of exercise also provides valuable hands-on training for fire personnel in fire suppression activities while working safely in a controlled environment. Smoke from this controlled burn will be visible from Hollister, Santa Clara Valley, Salinas Valley, and San Benito County. Weather conditions will be monitored and the burn may be postponed if burning conditions are found to be unfavorable. CAL FIRE is in close consultation with the National Weather Service’s Monterey office and the Monterey Bay Air Resources District to ensure that the burn takes place in appropriate weather conditions; the project may be postponed if conditions are

Officer stabbed by inmate at CTF in Soledad

A correctional officer at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, was attacked by an inmate he was escorting back to his cell on Friday morning, July 26 at around 9:15 am. The CDCR reports that 36-year-old Michael Ellison has been identified as the inmate suspect and has been transferred to Salinas Valley State Prison as the investigation continues. Ellison attacked the staff member with an "inmate-manufactured weapon," striking him multiple times in the face and body. The officer received cuts to his forehead, right thigh and left hand. He was transported to an outside hospital to be treated and is expected to fully recover. A CDCR news release states that responding prison staff used physical force and pepper spray to subdue Ellison who was not injured.  Ellison has been serving a life-with-the-possibility-of-parole sentence from Riverside County for second-degree murder, since 2004. The CDCR also indicates that Ellison has been convicted in Kern and Kings counties

Panetta leads Dem. CA Delegation in Urging USDA to Rescind Proposal to Kick Millions off of SNAP

Recent Audit report states what kind of improvements need to be done at Lake Nacimiento

According to an Audit Report submitted by an outside agency recently Lake Nacimiento is in need of expensive repairs that could cost more than $50 million. District 3 Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez said that the issues that need to be addressed have to do with ongoing maintenance involving some of the pipes that have some corrosion, while some of the infrastructure needs to be updated and improved regarding the technology consisting of monitoring the impact of water that comes out of the stoway. Lopez also stated that the report recommended that there needs to be more operational improvements done involving dam safety monitoring by reprioritizing some of the job duties with certain employees at the Monterey County Water Resource Agency. Lopez indicated that this will probably go to a public 218 vote which is a property owner vote involving what projects they'd like to see take place at the Lake Nacimiento.

Pinnacles Gateway Partners met on Thursday, July 18 in the SAR Building at the Park to listen to new Pinnacles National Park Superintendent Blanca Alvarez Stransky speak about some of the challenges the Park faces moving forward that involve improving alternative transportation for visitors who are coming in and out of the Park, having the facilities in the Park worked on and improving recreational opportunities for visitors. Park Biologist and Hunter Daniel Ryan also addressed the meeting by giving a presentation about lead being a huge issue in the Park with Condors and other wildlife that come in contact with it.

EAH Housing, an affordable housing nonprofit organization, announced on Thursday, July 18 the acquisition of 11 acres of land at 41206 Walnut Avenue in Greenfield, California. King City man arrested for inappropriately touching children

On July 17 of 2018 a 24-year-old female contacted the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and reported that she had been sexually abused by 41-year-old Daniel Macias Victoria at a residence located on the 600 block of Bishop Street in King City during the years of 2000 to 2002. The investigation was forwarded to the King City Police Departments Investigations Bureau and the ensuing investigation revealed that the victim had been inappropriately touched by the suspect when she was a small child and continued for 2 years. A second female victim, who is also 24-years old revealed she had been inappropriately touched in 2005 by the suspect, and a third female victim, who is now 22-years old, was identified and revealed that she was inappropriately touched as well during the same time period as victim one. The investigation took 12 months to complete and culminated with the arrest Victoria on Tuesday July 23, 2019 at his residence in Salinas. The suspect was transported and booked into

Panetta Co-Sponsors Legislation to Combat Robocalls and Scammers

WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday, July 22, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced his co-sponsorship of three pieces of legislation to stop abusive robocall practices. Soledad Man pleads No Contest to Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Minor

Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Monday, July 22 that on Friday, July 19, 54-year-old Ruben Crystalinas of Soledad, pled no contest to 1 felony count of continuous sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 14. In April of 2019, a 13-year-old girl shared with the Soledad Police Department that she had been molested starting at the age 4 by Crystalinas, an individual who helped run an unlicensed daycare center in the city of Soledad and which the young girl attended. The girl alleged that from ages the 4 to 6, the defendant would bring her into a shed on his property and make her touch his genitalia and/or occasionally would grope her body as well. She stated that this happened on a monthly basis during the time she stayed at the day care center. The girl also shared a series of incidents that occurred from ages 8 to 10 where she would encounter Crystalinas in social settings and he inappropriately touched her outside the presence of other people. 2 people killed in late night collision on 101 in Greenfield

Two people have have been killed from a fatal accident involving multiple vehicles that took place on Highway 101 north of Hudson Road in Greenfield just before midnight on Sunday night, July 21. According to CHP Officer Mike Rigby, a 71-year-old male driver from Salinas was driving a Honda Odyssey southbound in the northbound lane of the highway for unknown reasons just before midnight. The Honda then hit a Nissan Rogue driven by a 38-year-old female from San Jose that was going northbound. After that collision, a Ford Fusion driven by an 18-year-old female from Folsom hit the Honda, and at the same time a tractor operated by a 24-year-old male from Apple Valley struck the Nissan. The Ford and tractor then continued further north and hit each other. At that point, all of the vehicles came to a stop. The Salinas man driving the Honda died from his injuries, the 38-year-old San Jose woman driving the Nissan also died, while a 39-year-old male passenger of the Nissan had major injuries

Greenfield man pleads no contest to stabbing his brother death

Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Wednesday, that on July 17, that 19-year-old Juan Cervantes of Greenfield pled no contest to voluntary manslaughter and admitted a special allegation for the use of a knife during a killing. He also pled no contest to several counts of assault with a deadly weapon. On the morning of October 21, 2018 on the 50 block of 9th Street in Greenfield, Cervantes and his brother were hanging out at their mother’s home, where the victim also lived. They hung out together all day at the home, leaving twice together and returning. In the evening, Cervantes and the victim locked themselves in a bedroom. Their mother checked on them thinking it was strange that the door was locked, but they told her they were fine and just talking. Moments later she heard what sounded like a physical altercation coming from the bedroom. The victim opened the bedroom door and their mother observed Cervantes striking the victim in the head multiple ti

King City man wanted in hit and run crash found dead

The body of a man discovered on Thursday morning, July 18 in the Salinas River Bed in Paso Robles, has been identified as a wanted hit-and-run suspect. 40-year-old Pedro Alvarado-Torres, of King City was found at around 8:30 am by a resident who was metal detecting. Paso Robles police officers along with the Fire Department were dispatched to the area, while 30 minutes later, the CHP was paged because responding authorities had suspected that the deceased man located was a possible hit-and-run suspect who fled from a head-on collision that took place sometime before 2 am early Monday morning, July 15 on Highway 101, just south of Niblick road. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the identity of the deceased man is Pedro Alvarado Torres of King City and are investigating the cause of his death.

Panetta Introduces Legislation to Support Legal Services for Homeless Veterans

Brush fire knocked down at Fort Hunter Liggett

Fire season in South Monterey County and statewide continues to make it's presence known.  An overnight fire near Fort Hunter Liggett was contained at 1,600 acres at around 3 am early Wednesday morning, July 17. The blaze began off of Nacimiento and Ferguson Roads on Tuesday night, July 16. Fort Hunter Liggett, Cal Fire and the Los Padres Forest firefighters were all on the scene to assist. No injuries were reported.

Residents and Council speak up Sacramento in push for Greenfield Courthouse

The push to have a courthouse built in Greenfield is continuing as Greenfield Councilmembers along with residents from the community were at the State Capitol in Sacramento on Tuesday, July 16 to make their case as to why there needs to be a courthouse constructed in South Monterey County. Greenfield City Councilwomen Angela Untalon and Nely Martinez along with former Greenfield Mayor John Huerta made the trip. Neil Kitchens appears in court and has preliminary hearing date set

2018 Republican candidate for Assembly District 30 Neil Kitchens appeared in Monterey County District Court on Tuesday morning, July 16 in order to have a date set for his preliminary hearing. Kitchens is facing 2 counts of voter registration fraud and 3 counts of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument. If he is found guilty, he could face 3 years and 8 months in prison. Kitchens preliminary hearing will be held during the 2nd week of August.

New Ag Mural in King City

Phase 1 of a new mural has taken shape behind El Pueblo Market in King City made possible by King City In Bloom, local businesses and volunteers in the community. Muralist Beebe Hargrove said that this mural celebrates agricultural businesses from the past and present. Hargrove indicated that it took 3 weeks to complete the mural, while before the work on it started there was a large designing process for it that occurred for about 6 months. Hargrove stated that phase 2 of this mural is expected be done sometime in 2020.

King City driver wanted in wrong way accident on 101 in Paso Robles

On Monday morning, July 15 at approximately 1:51 am 40-year-old Pedro Alvarado-Torres of King City drove his 2002 Mazda Tribute the wrong-way southbound in the northbound traffic lanes of US-101 in the Paso Robles area. Consequently, after traveling the wrong-way, Alvarado-Torres' vehicle collided with a Mazda 3, driven by 62-year-old Anne Neville-Olson of Atascadero in the northbound lanes. After the collision, both vehicles came to rest in the center median just south of the South Spring Street off-ramp. Immediately following the collision, Alvarado-Torres fled the scene on foot, while Neville-Olson sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision. Shortly after the accident, 55-year-old Monica Cantu of Paso Robles and 49-year-old Raul Gomez of Paso Robles who were traveling in separate vehicles northbound on US-101 came upon the scene to stop and render aid. King City man arrested for Lewd Acts with a Minor

On May 22, 2018 Officers from the King City Police Department contacted a 16-year-old female who reported she had been sexually abused by 34-year-old Raul Martinez of King City. The investigation was turned over to the King City Police Department's Investigations Bureau. The ensuing investigation revealed that the victim had been inappropriately touched by the suspect when she was 13-years-old and continued for approximately 1 year. The investigation took 14 months to complete and culminated with the arrest of the suspect on the 700 Block of South First Street in King City on Sunday, July 14, 2019. The suspect when interviewed by investigators admitted his wrong doings. Martinez was transported and lodged at the Monterey County Jail and has been charged with Lewd Acts with a child under 14 years of age and Continuous Lewd acts with a child under 14 years of age. Greenfield man found guilty of DUI

On Friday, July 12 Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced that Antonio Ramirez of Greenfield was found guilty of driving under the influence after a three-day jury trial. On August 17, 2018, at approximately 10:00 pm, a resident of Walnut Avenue in Greenfield heard a loud crash before going outside to investigate. The resident saw Ramirez had rear-ended his car. Ramirez started to drive away, but the resident was able to convince him to stop. Another resident called 911. Greenfield Police Officers responded and noticed Ramirez seemed intoxicated. After Ramirez admitted drinking, driving, and feeling the effects of the alcohol he had consumed, the officers placed him under arrest for driving under the influence. Ramirez agreed to provide a breath sample, which showed his BAC was .19%. The trial was held before Judge Efren Iglesia. Ramirez was sentenced to five years’ probation conditioned upon serving 30 days in jail, not driving with any measurable amount

Dumpster fire put out by Greenfield Fire Department

Greenfield Firefighters were able to put out a dumpster fire on the 600 block of Walnut Avenue to the rear of a business or in an alley sometime after 9:30 am on Thursday morning, July 11. Crews extinguished the fire before it spread to surrounding dumpsters. This is one of many fires they’ve responded to that were to the rear of a business or in an alley. 5 people arrested in drug raid in Greenfield

On Thursday, July 11 at 5:30 am, the Greenfield Police Department, the DEA, the State Parole and Salinas Police Department's Violence Suppression Task Force executed a search warrant at 414 Calaveras Way. During the warrant methamphetamine, a firearm, ammunition, heroin, drug paraphernalia along with glass pipes, syringes, over 50 marijuana plants, cash and packaging material were located in the residence. 1 vehicle collision on 101 in Greenfield

A 1 vehicle crash occurred in Greenfield north of Lagomarsino off of Highway 101 South sometime before 11 am on Wednesday morning, July 10. According to the CHP, a 60-year-old King City woman was driving a GMC Yukon when for unknown reasons she swerved to the right shoulder striking and destroying a Call Box Pole. She then ended up drifting to the left of the highway hitting a concrete wall in the center divide. The woman received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas to be treated, while her vehicle was totaled from the accident.

Brush fire extinguished in San Ardo

A wildfire flared up sometime after 9:30 pm near Sargent Canyon Road in San Ardo on Tuesday night, July 9. Cal Fire fully knocked down the blaze sometime on Wednesday afternoon, July 10 after 3 pm. The blaze burned around 190 acres which was adjusted from 300 acres. No structures were threatened and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Pot operation raid in South Monterey County

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office seized 1350 marijuana plants and a rifle in an illegal cultivation bust on the 53000 block of Pine Canyon Road in South Monterey County on Tuesday, July 9. The Sheriff's Office County of Monterey Marijuana Eradication Team along with investigators with the District Attorney's Office, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Marina police and RMA served a search warrant in that area. No suspects are in custody, but the Sheriff's Office believes that one suspect may have escaped into the hills. The investigation is continuing. Amber Alert deactivated for 1-year-old child in Paso Robles

The CHP reports that an Amber Alert issued for 1-year-old Namaste Dix at 2:05 pm on Wednesday, July 10 has been deactivated. They say that Dix was found and the suspects are in custody.

An Amber Alert was issued at 2:05 pm on Wednesday, July 10 for San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties along with others for a child who was allegedly abducted or taken by his mother. The CHP is looking for 1-year-old Namaste Dix who was last seen with his mother, 23-year-old Rashawna Bullock on Wednesday, July 10 at around 9:15 am in Paso Robles. Bullock is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and 164 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. The CHP states that she is driving a dark grey 2012 Jeep Cherokee with the California license plate number 6XKD235. If you see either of them, you are asked to call 911.

4 Inmates hurt at Salinas Valley State Prison

Four inmates were injured and five inmate-made weapons were found after a riot at Salinas Valley State Prison on Monday night, July 8 at 6:30 pm. Around 25 inmates took part in the riot at the prison in their dayrooms. According to officials at the Prison, no staff members were hurt. Staff used nonlethal rounds and pepper spray to stop the riot. Four inmates suffered puncture wounds during the riot, and three of them have already returned to the prison following a hospital visit. Five inmate-manufactured weapons were discovered, while the cause of the riot is under investigation.

Highway 101: Wild Horse Road – Jolon Road, King City:  July 8 – July 12 One lane will be closed along northbound and southbound Highway 101 in King City between Wild Horse Road and Jolon Road for shoulder & grounding operation work from 7 am to 4 pm. Highway 101: Camp Roberts: June 27 – September 27 One long-term lane closure is in place along northbound and southbound Highway 101 at Camp Roberts for paving work until September 27 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, there will also be a long-term closure of the on and off ramps of northbound Highway 101 at Camp Roberts. The King City Rustler Weekly Newspaper is now under new ownership through the New SV Media Group which is a Publisher based in San Jose. The announcement was made on Monday, July 1 in Watsonville by President Nickolas Monico of News Media Corporation located out of Rochelle, Ilinois that had owned the Rustler for over 23 years. This is only the 3rd change in ownership for the weekly paper since it began publication 118 years ago. The Rustler was family owned from 1901 until 1995, while NMC owned the Rustler from 1995 through the middle of 2019. The Greenfield News, the Soledad Bee and the Gonzales Tribune which are sister papers of the Rustler were also purchased by the New SV Media Group. Body found in Paso Robles

On Sunday, July 7 at approximately 6:45 AM, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office was contacted regarding a possible body spotted on the side of the roadway off of Estrella Road near Hog Canyon in rural Paso Robles. Sheriff's Deputies responded and found a deceased Hispanic male. Sheriff's Detectives are conducting a suspicious death investigation. Greenfield man arrested for attempted murder, kidnapping & other domestic violence charges

On Friday, July 5, Greenfield Police Officers contacted a victim regarding a past tense domestic violence incident. During the course of the investigation 36-year-old Orestes Ramirez of Greenfield, was identified as the suspect. The investigation indicated that Ramirez threatened to kill the victim, held the victim against her will and strangled her. Ramirez was arrested for domestic violence related charges, attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and criminal threats. Ramirez was booked into the Monterey County Jail and is being held on $1,000,000 bail. 1 man is dead in fatal 1 vehicle accident In Greenfield

One man died and the driver was arrested in a fatal 1 vehicle accident that occurred in the Greenfield area sometime before 3 pm on Thursday, July 4. According to the CHP, the crash took place at around 2:55 pm as 21-year-old Jose Flores Orellana of Salinas was heading east on Arroyo Seco Road and east of Clark Road. Orellana was allegedly speeding. The vehicle he was operating drifted by going off the road, spinning across both lanes of Arroyo Seco, and going into a dirt embankment of an irrigation ditch before rolling several times. All three occupants were wearing their seatbelts, but Jose Antonio Menjivar of Salinas was killed. Orellana and another passenger picked up minor injuries from the collision. Orellana was arrested at the scene for manslaughter and felony DUI.
