Assemblymember Robert Rivas issues Statement Following Mass Shooting at Gilroy Garlic Festival

(SALINAS) – On Monday, July 29, Assemblymember Robert Rivas (Hollister) responded to the mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday, July 28, 2019.
“I was devastated to learn about the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival last night. My heart breaks for the families who are suffering because of this outrageous violent attack. This senseless act has left many injured and claimed the lives of three young individuals, including Stephen Romero, who was just six years old.”
“No parent should have to fear taking their children to a festival. No families should be afraid of what might happen while enjoying a summer evening. The Gilroy Garlic Festival has been a treasured cultural tradition that brought thousands together and raised millions to support local charities and community groups. Gilroy is resilient and our community will come together.”
“Thank you to all of the first responders who took swift action to engage the shooter, and for working tirelessly through the night to assist and provide aid to the injured and those separated from their family.”
“Healing from this tragedy will take time. I personally pledge to work with our community and elected leaders to prevent such senseless tragedies from occurring, and to find a way forward for our families, our children, and our future.”
