2024 Salinas Valley Fair Kick-Off After Dark

  KING CITY, CA – The Salinas Valley Fair held their annual Salinas Valley Fair Kick-Off on Saturday, April 20. The night started with a great turnout of about 625 attendees, bidding in the silent auction, and a delicious dinner by the King City Young Farmers. Once dinner was served, speeches were given by Lauren Hamilton, CEO, Frank Lopez, Fair Board President, Miss Salinas Valley Fair, and Miss King City Stampede. All welcomed fairgoers to the 80th Salinas Valley Fair, May 16-19, 2024, staff was thanked for all their hard work year-round, and they highlighted the Maddie & Tae concert on Saturday, May 18. The live auction started at 8:00pm – hands were up and bids were high! The Fair had 33 live auction items, and 16 were sold before the power went out. SPCA Wildlife Center Rescues Pelicans

  SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is rescuing pelicans in distress across our county, including on Alvarado Street, on Camino Aguajito, in the middle of Carmel Valley Road, in Point Lobos, at the Coast Guard Pier, on Cannery Row, in Moss Landing, and in a backyard in Carmel. The pelicans are all thin to emaciated with poor blood values and unable to fly.  The SPCA rescued 9 pelicans in the past few days, with more calls for help. A similar rescue happened previously in May, 2022.  If you see a pelican or any other animal in distress, please contact us. The SPCA Wildlife Center is here to help, thanks to your support. The Fort Hunter Liggett Youth Fishing Derby is April 27!

  FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. - Fort Hunter Liggett Directorate of Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) will host its annual Youth Fishing Derby for ages 15 and younger on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 6:30 a.m. to noon at Del Venturi Reservoir. The reservoir will be stocked with about 3,000 pounds of rainbow trout for participants. Signs will be posted to guide visitors to the event. Children up to age 15 from FHL and surrounding communities are invited and will not need a fishing permit. When the derby ends, the pond will be open for everyone who has a California fishing license. No FHL fishing permit will be needed April 27 and 28. Man in King City Detained for 5 Counts of Attempted Homicide

  The King City Police Department was dispatched to the alleyway behind the 600 Block of Meyer Street in King City for the report of shots fired at 5:57 pm on Monday, April 22.  Upon arrival to the area evidence of a shooting was located.  A review of video surveillance in the area was conducted, which led to identifying the suspect vehicle, and the victim’s vehicle.  The victim’s vehicle was occupied by 5 people who were not injured.  The suspect vehicle was identified and located at a residence on the 700 Block of Talbot Street in King City.        The King City Police Department Investigations Unit authored and obtained a search warrant for the residence on Talbot Street.  With the assistance of Salinas PDs Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, the Greenfield Police Department and Salinas Valley State Prison’s Investigative Services Unit, a search warrant was served on the residence. One suspect was located identified as 18-year-old Andrew Mares of King City who was arrested and

  A 2 vehicle collision occurred on Highway 101 Northbound in the Chualar area between Road Esperanza Road at 3:29 pm on Monday afternoon, April 22. No injuries were reported.

Arroyo Seco Road Reopens Following Slide Safeguard Work; Motorists will See Additional Work Over the Next Month

  Arroyo Seco Road reopened to the public on Thursday, April 18 after major stabilization work. Motorists will see additional repairs occurring over the next month. The County of Monterey Public Works and its contractor Graniterock were able to clear and stabilize the road after damages from winter storms and more recently, crews have been able to work in the area to put in some additional safeguards. Crews have installed protective barriers to an area of the road under a hillside which had a visible landslide in 2023, allowing the opening of the road to all traffic. The landslide area is roughly near the intersection of Arroyo Seco Road and Carmel Valley Road at milepost 4.5. This area has been constantly monitored since the slide was discovered in April of 2023 and with the storms earlier this year, debris continues to fall toward the roadway. A protective barrier was installed to stop the debris and small rocks from falling directly onto the roadway. Residents are urged to continue

Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies Serve Search Warrants Related to 2024 King City Mass Shooting and Soledad Double Homicide; Announces Connection Made Between Both Investigations

  Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and King City Police Department investigators announced on Thursday, April 18 that they have developed information connecting the King City mass shooting and a Double homicide of two cousins that occurred just outside of Soledad. On March 3, 2024, 11 people were shot during a mass shooting at a birthday party on the 200 block of Second Street in King City. 7 were injured and 4 were killed. On February 4, 2024, two cousins were shot and killed during a double homicide that occurred on Los Coches Road. As part of the ongoing investigation, over 50 search warrants have been served. Because of this work, on the morning of April 18, 2024, agencies from King City Police, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and other allied agencies served additional search warrants on the 200 block of 6th Street and 3000 block of 11th Street in Greenfield.   Monterey County, CA - April 18, 2024 - The County of Monterey is proud to announce that it has been awarded two significant grants under the State of California's Encampment Resolution Funding program, totaling over $11 million. This funding will facilitate crucial efforts to address homelessness in the region and assist in the resolution of two major encampments. Gonzales Man Found Guilty of Felony Animal Abuse for the Killing of Gonzales High School 4-H Lambs

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced that 31-year-old Jose Jesse Marquez of Gonzales was found guilty of the following charges: felony animal abuse with an allegation that the crime involved a deadly or dangerous weapon (four counts), felony resisting a police officer, and felony burglary. The Honorable Jennifer O’Keefe further found true enhancements for a prior strike conviction and numerous factors in aggravation. These convictions constitute four strike offenses under California’s three strikes law, which directs that the defendant will face life behind bars if he commits another strike. The defendant faces approximately 20 years and 4 months in prison when he is sentenced on June 4, 2024. At approximately 2:29 a.m. on February 18, 2023, the defendant rode his bicycle to the Gonzales High School and entered the property to take a tool. Ukrainian Refugee Olga Mihailicenko Exhibits Work at Paso Robles City Library as Featured Artist for the Month of April

  The Paso Robles City Library’s April Artist of the Month is Olga Mihailicenko. Mihailicenko is a Ukrainian refugee from Sumy, Ukraine. She came to Paso Robles in August of 2022 to stay with a host family with nothing more than her carry-on luggage. Since she left everything behind, she has had to start over from nothing with her paintings. She first learned to paint in Italy and has exhibited her art in both Italy, Ukraine and now Paso Robles, however she has sold her paintings all over the world. Her specialty is cityscapes done in an abstract expressionist style. Mihailicenko’s work will be on display in the library throughout the month of April.

Rep. Lofgren Announces $16.2M+ in Federal Funding to Make Roads Safer in Morgan Hill and Salinas

Soledad Man Sentenced for DUI Murder and Vehicular Manslaughter

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Thursday, April 11 that 32-year-old David Merino Ramirez of Soledad was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison after a jury in February convicted him of Murder and Vehicular Manslaughter. Judge Rafael Vasquez imposed the sentence. On August 21, 2020, around 9:00 p.m., Ramirez was driving northbound at speeds exceeding 80mph on Metz Road between the cities of Greenfield and Soledad. Due to his excessive speed and level of intoxication Ramirez lost control, striking a dirt embankment and flipping his car upside down. His passenger 26-year-old Noe Santillan was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by first responders. California Highway Patrol Officers arrived on the scene shortly after the crash. After conducting a series of field sobriety tests police determined that Ramirez was under the influence of alcohol. A subsequent breath test showed that he had a blood alcohol level of .17, ove

  Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated will be hosting its Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, April 12 from 11:00am-1:30pm at the King City Recreation Center located 401 Division Street, King City. Salinas Valley Fair Kickoff Dinner, Dance & Auction is April 20!

  KING CITY – Spring is here and it’s time for some fun! That’s what is in store at the Salinas Valley Fair’s annual kickoff dinner dance Saturday, April 20 in the Orradre building. “Our Fair theme this year is ‘Golden Hills & Fair Time Thrills’ and we are going to launch into fair time fun with our annual fair kickoff dinner, dance and auction,” said Frank Lopez, Salinas Valley Fair Board President. “Enjoy a great meal, dance the night away and shop our amazing silent auction items.” The kick off party begins at 5:30 p.m. with a no-host bar by the King City Knights of Columbus followed by a King City Young Farmer’s steak dinner at 7:00 pm. Fatal 1 Vehicle Rollover Outside of Chualar on April 7

  The Monterey-CHP reports that a 63-year-old man from Chualar was tragically killed as a result of a fatal 1 vehicle crash that happened on Old Stage Road and Chualar Road outside of Chualar at 3:24 pm on Sunday afternoon, April 7. Investigators state that an SUV went off the edge of the road, overturned into a field, while the driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation, while the identity of the man has not yet been released.

King City Rotary Hosts Successful Fun Run on March 30; Amidst wind and rain, the Rabbit Run Made its 3rd appearance in King City, Promoting Camaraderie and Wellness!

  King City, CA— The Rotary Club of King City hosted its 3rd annual Rabbit Run on Saturday, March 30, off Oasis Road in King City.  Participants faced 18mph winds and occasional sprinkles throughout the otherwise bright, sunny morning. Rotary hosted 124 runners and walkers on an exhilarating route through the San Bernabe Vineyard estate of Delicato Family Wines.  Mee Memorial occupational therapist and Rotarian Barry MacGregor volunteered his time and skills on-site to provide medical attention as needed.  MacGregor also brought his bicycle and served as the pacesetter for the 5K, ensuring no runners went astray in the vineyard.             Leading the way on the 5K was the overall and top male runner, Josh Riley, and Emily Cole for female runner. County of Monterey announces new domain name effective April 12, 2024

  The County of Monterey will transition to a new domain name Friday, April 12, 2024. On this date, the County of Monterey’s public-facing websites will transition from the current domain name, https://www.co.monterey.ca.us/, to the new domain name, https://www.countyofmonterey.gov/. This change is in compliance with Assembly Bill 1637 Local government: internet websites and email addresses, signed into law by the Governor on October 8th, 2023 which requires government agencies which maintain a website for use by the public utilize a “.gov” top-level domain. This transition marks a pivotal step towards bolstering cybersecurity and enhancing accessibility for the County of Monterey constituents.

Bat Tests Positive for Rabies in Toro Park, CA

  A bat found on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, near Toro Creek Road in the Toro Park area of unincorporated Monterey County has tested positive for the rabies virus. Hitchcock Road Animal Services has investigated this incident and determined that while there was exposure to an owned pet, there was no human exposure. The pet that was exposed has been placed under quarantine.   Rabies is a virus that causes a fatal illness in humans and other mammals. The County of Monterey Public Health Bureau and Animal Services want to remind residents and visitors that there is a continuous presence of rabies in local wildlife, both inside and outside of the city. In Monterey County, skunks and bats are the most common species to test positive for the virus.  Domestic animals, including companion dogs and cats, are at risk for rabies exposure when they come in contact with wildlife. Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 in South Monterey County for the Week of April 7

MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, April 7 through Saturday, April 13.  Highway 101: North Main/Chualar Street: April 8 – April 11   There will be one lane along northbound Highway 101 at North Main Street/Chualar Street for slope repair work from 8 am to 3 pm. Highway 101: Spence Road – Eckhardt Road: April 9   There will be one lane closure along northbound Highway 101 between Spence Road and Eckhardt Road for pavement work from 7 am to 4:30 pm. Highway 101: Alvarado/San Bernardo – Los Lobos Road: April 6   There will be one lane closure along northbound and southbound Highway 101 between Alvardo/San Bernardo and Los Lobos Road for utility work from 7 am to 1 pm. California Highway Patrol officers will also be performing traffic breaks during those hours along the northbound and southbound lanes. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Mutton Busting Entries are Being Accepted Until June 6 for The California Rodeo Salinas Competition in July!

  SALINAS, CA, April 4, 2024 – The California Rodeo Salinas organizes various events dedicated to preserving and celebrating the traditions of the American West, with a special focus on educating children about the industry and its customs. One of the most beloved annual attractions is the mutton busting, or sheep riding, which takes place during the Rodeo performances as well as the Big Week Bull Riding.   Young aspiring cowboys and cowgirls can participate in the mutton busting event sponsored by Pacific Valley Bank at all four California Rodeo Salinas performances from July 18 to the 21, as well as at the Big Week Bull Riding Xtreme Bulls event on July 17. Children aged 4 to 7, weighing a maximum of 60 pounds on the day of the ride, are eligible to ride sheep during the competitions on July 17, 18, 19, or 20.
