Gonzales High School Football player recovering after suffering serious brain injury

Gonzales High School Sophomore Receiver Angel Bravo suffered a serious brain injury as he landed on his head during a 7 on 7 drill that the Football team was taking part in on Saturday, July 27 in Carmel as they prepare for the 2019 season. Spartan Head Football Coach Art Berlanga said that Bravo just unfortunately landed hard on the back of his head on the ground of a grass surface after going up to make a catch during the drill and added that he had seen plays like that many times in all of the years he's played and coached football. Moments later Bravo collapsed and hit his head again between a divider and a long jump pit of the sideline. Bravo was transported to a trauma center at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas where surgery was performed immediately because of internal bleeding and hemmorhaging in his brain. Bravo was put under a 48 hour sedation, but was able to wake up in less than 24 hours after going through surgery. Coach Berlanga said that the Doctors were surprised and shocked of Bravo's conditions stating that Bravo passed many of the Doctors tests they gave him, he's breathing on his own, he can speak, he can move his extremities and his limbs, while the rest of his health is also improving. Coach Berlanga also indicated that the quick response from the coaching staff and emergency medical personnel probably saved Bravo's life. Bravo's recovery period is expected to be 6 to 8 months. Gonzales High School will begin the 2019 High School Football season on August 30 at home against Alisal High School.
