Attempted Homicide Incident in King City on April 30

On Saturday, April 30, 2022, at approximately 4:10 am officers from the King City Police Department with assistance of personnel from the Soledad Police Department, the Greenfield Police Department, and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of gunshots in the area of the 300 block of North San Lorenzo Street in King City. Officers made contact with an individual who reported when he arrived home that multiple suspects(s) began shooting at him. Although no victims were struck by the gunfire multiple vehicles and residences were. The victim advised when the gunfire stopped the suspect(s) fled the area in what is believed to be a darker color Honda travelling east on Collins. As the suspect vehicle fled the area the suspected vehicle encountered a patrol vehicle responding to the scene and attempted to ram it. Skunk and Bat test positive for rabies in Salinas and Chualar Canyon area

Salinas, CA – April 29, 2022 – A skunk found on April 26 near the East Romie Lane area in the City of Salinas, has tested positive for the rabies virus. This is the second instance of wildlife testing positive for the rabies virus in the last week. On April 22, a Mexican Freetail Bat was also confirmed to be positive for rabies in the Chualar Canyon area in unincorporated Monterey County. Animal Services has investigated both incidents and determined that, while there was exposure to owned pets, there was no human exposure in either case. The Monterey County Health Department and Animal Services want to remind the public that there is a continuous presence of rabies in local wildlife, both in and out of city limits. Junior Giants Baseball and Softball League Applications Are Being Accepted in Paso Robles

Effective immediately, the Paso Robles Police Activities League (PRPAL) is accepting applications for the Junior Giants Summer Baseball / Softball League. This is a non-competitive league open to boys and girls between the ages of 5-13 years of age. Junior Giants is divided into three leagues starting with T-Ball (5-7), Juniors (8-10), and Seniors 11-13. Baseball and Softball games will start Friday June, 17th, 2022. All games will be played in the evening hours between 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. at Barney Schwartz Park in Paso Robles. The Junior Giants league supplies a hat, jersey, and a glove to each player that they can keep at the conclusion of the season. Weed Abatement Inspections in Paso Robles Begins on May 1

Weed Abatement Clearance Guide The following guidelines should be followed year-round when maintaining weeds and other combustible material on your property: • Clear lots by mowing or disking to a maximum height of 4 inches. This includes vegetation that may be green now but dries later. Remove all cuttings. • Clearance shall be a minimum of 50 feet in width at the perimeter of a parcel and from any roadway, 10 feet from any driveway, and a minimum of 100 feet around all structures. Abatement should not disturb the soil under oak trees. • Clear all dead leaves, weeds, brush, trees, and tree limbs. • Remove excess trash, wood, or other combustibles from the property. Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services will begin seasonal weed abatement inspections and courtesy notifications on May 1. Those who do not properly remove weeds and combustible debris from their properties may have their property declared a nuisance and charged for weed abatement and administration fees.

Fatal 2 Vehicle Crash Outside of Chualar on April 29

One person was killed as a result of a 2 vehicle collision that occurred at 11:15 am on Friday, April 29 on the 600 block of River Road outside of Chualar. The Monterey County Regional Fire District- Chualar Station and other agencies were on the scene to assist. The cause of the accident is unknown.

Gonzales Police Officer Promoted to Corporal

Nathan Cordoba was promoted on April 18, 2022 to Police Corporal with the Gonzales Police Department. Corporal Cordoba has 4 years of Law Enforcement experience and has served in the California National Guard for many years. Corporal Cordoba also serves as the School Resource Officer for all schools in the Gonzales School District.

Youth Fishing Derby and Coyote Spring Fest Set for April 30 at Fort Hunter Liggett

On Saturday, April 30 from 6:30 am to 12 pm the Family and MWR team will be hosting the Youth Fishing Derby at the Del Venturi Reservoir at Fort Hunter Liggett, while the Coyote Spring Fest will be at the Mission Road Exit at Fort Hunter Liggett hapenning from 12 pm to 4 pm on April 30. A catalytic converter was reportedly swiped from a vehicle in Greenfield off of Clinton Way on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:05 am. If anyone has any information about this theft they're asked to call the Greenfield Police Department at 831-674-5111.

1 Vehicle Crash Outside of King City on Highway 198

A 1 vehicle accident happened outside of King City off of Peach Tree Road and Highway 198 at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, April 27. The Pine Canyon Fire Department along with CAL FIRE BEU and other agencies responded to assist. One person was injured and ended up being transported by Mercy Air to a local area hospital. Tha cause of the accident is unknown.

Registration is Open for The 2022 Home Brewing Competition that's being Hosted by the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles

SPCA Wildlife Center is Caring for 11 Rescued Baby Squirrels

The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is currently caring for all four of their local squirrel species: Eastern Fox, Eastern Gray, Western Gray, the California Ground Squirrel. They currently have 11 baby squirrels in our compassionate, skilled care. Three Eastern Gray Squirrels were found in a gutter in Salinas, all down and debilitated. Once rescued and stabilized, they recovered. They are now fully weaned off formula and in a safe outdoor enclosure where they are acclimating to our climate and learning to forage for solid, natural foods. One Western Gray Squirrel was found on the Soberanes Canyon trail very cold, debilitated, and with blood in her nose and mouth. She was rushed to our Wildlife Center for care. She has stabilized and is still on formula feedings. Since squirrels thrive in groups, we took in another Western Gray Squirrel from a nearby wildlife center so they can grow and learn together. Greenfield Man Sentenced to 36 Years in Prison for 15 Counts of Child Molestation

SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Tuesday, April 26 that the Honorable Mark E. Hood sentenced 49-year-old Gerardo Silva of Greenfield to 36 years in prison for committing 15 counts of a lewd act upon a child under 14 years old. All the offenses are violent felonies and are considered “strikes” under California’s Three Strikes law. Jane Doe 1 reported that Gerardo Silva, a family member had molested her on many occasions for several years. Jane Doe 1 was under 10 years old at the time the molests began. Jane Doe 1’s brave disclosure to law enforcement, many years after the crime occurred, resulted in 2 other victims disclosing abuse by Silva. Jane Doe 2 reported that Silva had molested her on one occasion when she was around 8 years old. Jane Doe 3 reported that Silva had molested her on several occasions when she was around 10 years old. Greenfield Man Pleads No Contest to Felony DUI and Impersonating a Police Officer

SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Tuesday, April 26 that 27-year-old Clemente Martinez of Greenfield, pled no contest to felony driving under the influence and admitted 5 prior convictions. The current case is Martinez’s 6th conviction for driving under the influence since 2012. Martinez also pled no contest to impersonating a police officer. Martinez will receive a stipulated 2 year prison sentence. On March 6, 2022, at 3:16 a.m., after equipping his vehicle with flashing red and blue lights built into the grill, Martinez attempted to perform a traffic stop on an off-duty Monterey County Sheriff Sergeant. The off-duty sheriff initially yielded, but became suspicious when Martinez did not exit his vehicle. When Martinez abandoned the traffic stop and attempted to drive away the off-duty sergeant realized that Martinez was not operating a legitimate law enforcement vehicle and began to follow him. Vehicle Pursuit on April 25 that Began on Highway 101 Near King City Ends Outside of San Luis Obispo

According to the King City California Highway Patrol, an early morning car chase happened near King City and ended north of San Luis Obispo on Monday, April 25. The pursuit started at 12:51 am and ended at 1:36 am covering 75 miles of highway in 45 minutes. Calls came into law enforcement at about 12:45 am of a reckless driver heading southbound on Highway 101. King City CHP officers located the vehicle and attempted to pull the driver over, but when she didn't stop officers began a pursuit. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office assisted the CHP in following the driver who continued southbound along Highway 101 into San Luis Obispo County. The chase ended at Old Stagecoach Road north of San Luis Obispo when spike strips were placed in the road by officers which damaged the vehicle's tires and brought it to a stop. The King City CHP states that the elderly woman driving the vehicle who's name has not been released was experiencing a medical episode when she was operating

Fatal 1 Vehicle Accident on Highway 101 Outside of Chualar on April 22

One person was killed as a result of a fatal 1 vehicle wreck on Highway 101 southbound a half mile outside of Chualar at around 5:30 am on Friday morning, April 22. The CHP Monterey unit reports that a 45-year-old Hispanic male who's name has not been released was driving a Chevy Suburban and for unknown reasons his vehicle struck a concrete rail on Highway 101. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

SLO County Sheriff's Office Releases Name of Person Found Dead in Whitley Gardens on April 17

The Coroner's Unit of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, April 20 identified the body discovered beside the road of Highway 46 and Estrella Road in Whitley Gardens on Sunday, April 17 as 47-year-old Adrian Reyna of Wasco, CA. Deputies responded to that location and found the body approximately 5 miles from a vehicle thought to be associated with Reyna. No foul play is suspected. An autopsy is being conducted to determine manner and cause of death.

Brush Fire Extinguished in Salinas Riverbed Outside of King City on April 21

On Thursday, April 21 at 1:17 am the Pine Canyon Fire Department along with CAL FIRE BEU responded to a vegetation fire in the Salinas River bed outside of King City. Fire was contained to 1/2 acre. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is unknown.

2022 Central Coast Olive Oil Competition Results

(PASO ROBLES, CA) – The Central Coast Olive Oil Competition has released the results from the 2022 competition which featured premier oils produced across California. Rancho Azul y Oro Olive Farm (San Miguel) took home Best of Show Flavored. Cobram Estate (Woodland) Olivaia’s OLA (Lindsay) and Royal Oil (Menlo Park) took home the other 3 coveted Best of Show Robust, Delicate and Medium awards respectfully. “It was a good year for California olive oils especially the central coast,” says Chief Judge Paul Vossen. “It was nice to see so many different olive varietals being represented at the competition as blends and single cultivar oils”. SLO County Sheriff's Office Investigating Death of a Man in Whitley Gardens on April 17

According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office, a body was discovered on Highway 46 near Estrella Road in Whitley Gardens at 3:30 pm on Sunday, April 17. SLO County Sheriff's Deputies state that the victim identified as an adult man was found 5 miles away from a vehicle they think is connected with him. The man's death does not appear to be suspicious and officials have not positively identified the body. An autopsy is planned for sometime during the week of April 17.

1 Person Arrested from Fatal Vehicle Accident on Highway 101 in Atascadero on April 16

The CHP reports that 2 people were killed in a 2 vehicle wreck on Highway 101 near the Santa Barbara Road offramp in Atascadero on Saturday night, April 16. The crash happened at around 8 p.m. According to the CHP, smoke was seen coming from the vehicles, and two people were laying on the ground on the right side of the road. 21-year-old Felipe Gonzalez of Santa Maria was arrested after his Chevy Suburban smashed into a Chevy Cruze killing two passengers in the Cruze and sending three, including a 3-year-old child to a nearby hospital for treatment of major injuries, while Gonzalez picked up minor injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Telephone Scam Alert in King City

According to the King City Police Department on April 18, a victim received a call from an unknown female suspect who identified herself as a detective with the King City PD on April 13. The caller ID indicated that the call came from the King City Police Department's main phone number. The female suspect told the victim that she was investigating a case involving identity theft and instructed the victim to withdraw all of her money from her bank account so that her identity could be cleared. The female suspect also instructed the victim to take her money to a local Bitcoin depot and deposit it into an account. The victim did as instructed only to learn that she had fallen victim to a scam. The King City Police Department reminds the community to be careful when receiving phone calls from any person or institution asking for personal information and or money. The Soledad Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on the 200 block of 8th Street in Soledad at 9:24 pm on Friday night, April 15. Multiple people called in to report of gunshots in the area, while another person called stating that he and his brother were shot. Upon arrival, officers found 3 victims who had been shot. 2 of the victims were determined to be dead, while the 3rd victim was trasported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive. The Soledad PD was assisted by the Greenfield Police Department and the King City Police Department. City Manager Rene Mendez to leave post after over 17 years to Accept City Manager Opening in Watsonville

After nearly 18 years as the City Manager in Gonzales Rene Mendez is stepping down to become the new City Manager in Watsonville. Mendez said that he's excited about this new opportunity and is most proud of the relationships he's built with people during his time working in the Gonzales community. Mendez also said that he's looking forward to the challenge that awaits him and one of the reasons why is due to the fact Watsonville is a little similar to Gonzales in some ways. Mendez will begin his new duties as the City Manager in Watsonville in July of 2022.

Fire Put Out in Processing Plant Taylor Farms in Salinas

A 4 alarm fire that broke out at a Taylor Farms processing plant on Abbott Street in Salinas at around 7 pm on Wednesday evening, April 13 was contained sometime between 8 am and 10 am on Thursday morning, April 14, but fire crews stayed on the scene to monitor hot spots, while Hazmat teams were on site the rest of the day to assess any potential threats related to ammonia. An Evacuation Order was issued for an industrial area of South Salinas most of the morning and for over an hour during the afternoon impacting businesses, not residents, while a Shelter-in-Place Order was also put in place effecting for 35,000 people in South Salinas which included South of South Alisal Street to Spreckels Avenue and East of Main Street and Highway 68 to Hartnell Road before both were lifted by City Officials between 1 pm and 2 pm. Firefighters from the Salinas Fire Department and other agencies all over Monterey County responded to assist for numerous hours on Wednesday night and Thursday morning

1 Vehicle Accident on Highway 101 in Greenfield

A 1 vehicle crash happened on Highway 101 Southbound near the Hobson Avenue exit in the Greenfield area at 2:46 pm on Thursday, April 14. The CHP reports that the vehicle went out of control going down an embankment. Minor injuries were reported. The cause of the wreck is unknown.

King City Police Department Investigating Armed Robbery and Carjacking Theft on April 7

According to the King City Police Department, Officers at around 11 pm on Thursday night, April 7 responded to the 400 block of Division Street for a carjacking incident that occurred. An investigation revealed that 2 victims were outside of their vehicle when they were approached by 3 to 4 armed suspects who demanded the victims' phones and keys. The victims turned over the property as ordered and the suspects fled the scene in the victims' vehicle along with the vehicle they arrived in prior to the robbery. The victims' phones were later located and abandoned in King City, while the victims' vehicle was located in Alameda County and recovered. 2 subjects were identified as possible suspects in this case. Greenfield Police Warns Parents and Teens about Sextortion Schemes

The Greenfield Police Department reports that they've investigated recent incidents where teen boys were targeted in what is known as “sextortion.” Sextortion is a threat to expose a sexual image or video to extort the victim for money. Online predators will request to be friends with the victim. The predator will add the victim to social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. By doing so, the predator gathers information about the victim. The predator will turn the conversation sexual, and seduce the victim into sending nude images or videos. After, the predator will threaten to send the graphic images to the victims’ friends and family, in exchange for money in the form of a gift card.
