Scam Alert in Monterey County

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is advising residents to be aware and diligent to prevent from being taken advantage of. Scammers are making phone calls and identifying themselves as Deputies (using real Deputy's names) and soliciting money from victims due to outstanding warrants. The County Sheriff's Office will NOT call and demand or request any money for any reason. If you receive any such call it is a SCAM. Do not send any money to them. King City PD Partners with CueHit

On March 5, 2022 residents of King City will be some of the first in the state to use a new community engagement and feedback solution after an interaction with the Police Department. This new service uses text messaging to contact some 911 callers and others that have recently reported or been involved in non-life-threatening incidents. These text messages are sent hours or days after the incident and will ask citizens to take a quick survey about their experience with the police department. 'Cash for College’ Financial Aid Guidance Offered on February 26 at Hartnell College

Hartnell College will hold a “Cash for College” informational event between 8 and 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 26 on its Main Campus in Salinas, providing free financial aid presentations and one-on-one help in completing applications. It is open to Hartnell students and the general public, regardless of what college a student plans to attend in 2022-23. The timing is especially urgent because federal and state financial aid applications for the 2022-23 academic year are due March 2. 2 Men in Greenfield Arrested for Paraphernalia, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Other Charges

Greenfield Police Officers on Monday night, February 21 sometime after 8 pm arrested 24-year-old Santiago Cornejo off of Walnut and 10th Street for driving without a license, Possesion of Paraphernalia and Violation of Probation, while nearly 2 hours later just before 10 pm on Monday evening, February 21 Greenfield Police Officers arrested 20-year-old Omar Martinez and 18-year-old Ivan Martinez off of Palm Avenue for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Violation of Probation.

Vehicles in Greenfield Stolen

The Greenfield Police Department is investigating recent reports of vehicles that were stolen. The first report was filed on Saturday, February 19 before 12 pm that a vehicle was taken off of the 200 block of Alves Lane, while another vehicle was reportedly stolen off of the 200 block of Cedar Drive just before 9 am on Monday morning, February 21. Man in Soledad Arrested on Weapons Possession and Other Charges

According to the Soledad Police Department, known gang member Eduardo "Lalo" Vazquez - Segovia was out for a drive sometime on Tuesday afternoon, Feburary 22 in Soledad operating a vehicle with a suspended driver's license. As Segovia was coming up to the intersection of Monterey Street and 4th Street he saw several police officers at the intersection and while watching the officers, Segovia rear-ended a car in front of him, which all of the officers witnessed. Segovia was pulled over by the Officers and was found to also have a loaded firearm concealed on him. Segovia was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail on weapons, and vehicle code charges.

New Type III Fire Apparatus Placed into Service in Paso Robles Putting Out Vegetation Fires

PASO ROBLES, CA – Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services recently took delivery of its first Type III fire engine in the department’s history. The Paso Robles City Council approved the purchase of the fire apparatus built by Pierce Manufacturing INC. on February 16, 2021. The engine was placed in service for emergency response on Feb. 19, 2022. This specialized fire engine is designed to respond to wildland fires that pose a risk to the community of Paso Robles and across the State of California. In 2021, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded to 144 wildland fires. The 4x4 fire engine can access areas with difficult terrain and is equipped with specialized equipment for combatting wildland fires. Lost and Found Couple Who Ventured Off Trail into the Mitteldorf Preserve in Williams Canyon Rescued by Monterey County Sheriff's SAR Team on February 18

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, a husband and wife couple were rescued on Friday night, February 18 on the Mitteldorf Preserve on the Echo Ridge Trail after a 911 call was received from a cell phone as darkness was setting in. The signal was quickly lost, but not before the caller was able to give key details such as where their hike started, the last trail sign they saw, and that they were stuck and unable to climb out of a deep canyon. The couple had no communication, limited water, and food. Their hike made its way up Williams Canyon then into the Mitteldorf Preserve on the Echo Ridge Trail. The trail being steep, rough with multiple obstacles and darkness approaching, the pair sought a shortcut northeast into the ravine. This off-trail trek descended through the thick brush trying to access the creek and trail out. Man in Greenfield Arrested on Warrant for Rape

On Friday, February 18 at about 12:00 P.M., the San Jose Police Department informed Greenfield Police that 32-year-old Josue Garcia Rojas of Greenfield who was wanted for rape. Greenfield Police officers immediately went to Rojas’ home and arrested him on the warrant. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Monterey County Jail.

Manual Gonzales Sanchez was arrested sometime after 12 am on Thursday, February 17 in Gonzales after the Gonzales PD received a report of someone trespassing on the 200 block of Alta Street. Sanchez was located off of the 0 to 99 block of 2nd Street by Officers who also found him in possession of meth. Sanchez was booked into the Monterey County Jail.

Search Warrants Conducted in Soledad regarding Several Suspects Who Recently Arrested

On Friday morning, February 18 the Soledad Police Department, the Greenfield Police Department, and the California Department of Corrections And Rehabilitation (CDCR), served two search warrants in the city of Soledad. The search warrants were related to two separate attempted homicides within the city of Soledad. Investigators located evidence related to the incidents, and have already taken several suspects into custody, as well as impounded two vehicles involved in those crimes. Soledad and Greenfield Investigators will now go through the evidence and forward their findings to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.

City of King Announces First Positive General Fund Balance in 16 Years

At the State of the City Address on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, Mayor Mike LeBarre announced the City of King has achieved a positive balance in its General Fund. According to Mayor LeBarre, “We are very proud of this accomplishment. It took focus, dedication and working together as a team to achieve this major city goal. It wasn’t easy but we all knew it had to be done for our community and our future.” This milestone marks the first time the City has retired all debt in its General Fund since June 30, 2005. At that time, the City of King incurred significant debt and liability from a failed downtown development. That was followed with the impacts of the Great Recession, Police scandal, and a fire that destroyed a major sales tax producer, which all combined to devastate the local economy over a relatively short period of time. Greenfield High School Student Arrested for Possession with Intent to Sell to Minors and a Firearms Charge

On Wednesday, February 16 Greenfield High School staff informed the School Resource Officer of a student on campus who was in possession of marijuana. The student was in possession of multiple marijuana projects (wax, edibles, vape pens and cartridges). The student 18-year-old David Uribe was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to sell. With the assistance of the Soledad Police Department, officers continued their investigation by serving a search warrant at the student's home. Additional marijuana products and a loaded Polymer P80 9mm semiautomatic “ghost gun” firearm was located. This investigation is ongoing. Brush Fire in Greenfield Extenguished

Firefighters in Greenfield were able to extinguish a permitted agricultural burn that flared up on the westside of the Salinas River Bed at 1:30 pm on Thursday, February 17. The blaze burned 3 acres and was knocked down at around 5 pm. No strutures were damaged and no one was injured.

Search Warrant Leads to Gun Arrest in Greenfield

On Thursday morning, February 17 the Greenfield Police Department, the Soledad Police Department, agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), served a warrant in the 200 block of Chardonnay Drive. During the search warrant, “flash bang” devices were deployed as a safety measure. A flash bang is a non-lethal device that emits an extremely loud bang and flash of light. Officers found a 9mm Sig Sauer semiautomatic firearm. 30-year-old Pedro Nava of Greenfield was arrested for firearm charges. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail.

Paso Robles PD Arrests 2 and Cites 20 Drivers for License Violations at Paso Robles DUI Checkpoint on January 29

Paso Robles, Calif. – 2 arrested for driving under the influence and 20 cited for driving without a license, while conducting a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, January 29, 2022. The checkpoint was held on the 900 block of Creston Road from 6:00 p.m. to time 1:00 a.m. Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, Paso Robles Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe when they are traveling. Paso Robles Police Department will hold another DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint between July and September. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Sacramento, CA—On Monday, February 14 District 30 Assemblyman Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) and District 65 Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton) introduced Assembly Bill 2094, which will improve data collection on housing production for homeless and housing-insecure residents around the state. Specifically, this legislation will require local jurisdictions to clarify their progress toward building new units for extremely low-income households as part of existing reporting requirements. DUI Crash in Greenfield Leaves Hundreds Without Power on February 12

On Saturday night, February 12 sometime before 6 pm the Greenfield Police Department reported that a drunk driver hit a parked car off of Oak Avenue then collided head-on with a PG&E pole, leaving a family without transportation, and hundreds of others without power. No one was injured in the accident, but the Greenfield PD is asking people to drink responsibly. Driving under the influence can result in serious injuries or death, an arrest and guaranteed trip to jail, a lengthy court process, thousands of dollars in fines/penalties, suspended license, increased insurance, and so much more. 2 Men Were Arrested on February 11 on Firearms Charges in Greenfield; Felony Charges Recommended after Ammunition is Found During Probation Compliance Check of Juvenile in Greenfield

On Friday evening, February 11 the Greenfield and Soledad Police Departments teamed up for a Super Bowl weekend crime suppression detail in Greenfield and Soledad. While in Greenfield, officers contacted 20-year-old Angel Rivera of Greenfield and 18-year-old Victor Torres of Salinas on the 200 block of Tawny Port Way. Officers found three firearms that included two Glock-style 9mm “ghost” guns, and a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semiautomatic handgun. In addition, two gun magazines were also located, one of which was an extended magazine. Both men were arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail on multiple firearms related charges. As the crime suppression detail continued, officers conducted a probation compliance check in Greenfield, at the home of a juvenile on felony probation. Grower John Romans to be honored by Hartnell College at “Party” on May 21

The Hartnell College Foundation has announced on Thursday, February 10 that longtime Salinas Valley grower John Romans will receive their 2022 Leadership Award at the Party NEAR the Library in Salinas on May 21. Romans, who is a member of the foundation Board of Directors, was a longtime owner of King City-based Mission Ranches, which in 2019 merged with Taylor Farms under the Earthbound Farms brand. He is known as an innovator in organic agriculture and environmentally sustainable cultivation. The Party NEAR the Library, previously called Party in the Library because it began to celebrate Hartnell’s new library in 2006, received its new name in the Spring of 2021. Due to the pandemic, the 2021 event was held on May 9 on Hartnell College’s newly landscaped Central Plaza. The setting proved so ideal that the foundation will repeat the venue, with about 400 people expected to attend a fundraising luncheon and award presentation in May of 2022 to honor Romans with this Leadership Award.

Man Outside of Greenfield Busted for Possession of Firearms and Other Charges

On Wednesday afternoon, February 9 a deputy in South County contacted Derick Barajas on the outskirts of Greenfield. Barajas was believed to have an arrest warrant, which he did. When deputies detained him he attempted to punch a deputy. After searching a backpack in Barajas possession, a loaded sawed off shotgun was located hidden inside a sock. Deputies also found counterfeit $20 bills in his possession. Barajas was booked into the Monterey County jail charged with felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a short barreled shotgun, felon in possession of ammunition, and resisting arrest.

UPDATE on December 26, 2021 Homicide Investigation in King City

On Friday, February 11, 2022, at approximately 9:00am, Detectives from the King City Police Department, with assistance from the Salinas Police Department Violence Suppression Task Force and SWAT team, Greenfield Police Department, Soledad Police Department, Monterey County Probation Department, and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation executed search warrants at a residence located on the 300 block of Soberanes Street and a residence on the 200 block of 7th Street in King City, CA in furtherance of this investigation. During the search warrant service detectives contacted and arrested a 16‐year‐old juvenile male for three (3) counts of homicide. Prior to the service of the search warrants detectives developed probable cause to believe the juvenile was involved in the commission of the crime and obtained a Ramey Arrest Warrant, signed and authorized by a judge of the Monterey County Superior Court for his arrest. A 2 vehicle collision happened off of the intersection of North Vanderhurst and Ellis in King City involving a 2019 Dodge Charger King City Police car and a 2003 Honda Accord on Wednesday, February 9 at 8:05 am. According to the King City CHP, the King City Police car hit the Honda Accord when the squad car drove through a stop sign with it's sirens blaring as the Officer was responding to a crash in the area. The driver in the Honda Accord who had 2 children who were passengers in the vehicle received minor injuries, while the King City Police Officer complained of pain.

Bank Robbery in Paso Robles

On Thursday, February 10 at approximately 12:31pm, the Paso Robles Police Department received a 911 call from US Bank off of 189 Niblick Road that a robbery had just occurred. Employees of the bank advised a White male adult, wearing a black sweatshirt and a black face mask, handed one of the tellers a note demanding money. The employee complied with the suspect and handed over an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect fled out of the bank and ran west toward the Salinas Riverbed area. Responding police units quickly set up a perimeter and began to search for involved suspects. The Paso Robles Police K9 Unit (K9 Renzo) was deployed to track the suspect’s path. The K9’s track and witness statements corroborated information that the suspect may have fled via a drainage culvert and entered a waiting vehicle on the 200 block of Oak Hill Road. Man in Paso Robles Arrested for Possession of Narcotics, Weapons Violations and other Charges

On Tuesday night, February 8 at approximately 11:56 p.m., the Paso Robles Police Department received a call regarding a suspicious vehicle parked in a parking lot on the 2400 block of Riverside Avenue. The caller advised the vehicle had been running for about 45 minutes, but there did not appear to be anyone in or around the vehicle. Officers responded to the area and contacted 36-year-old Paso Robles resident Dustin Marlow in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. As the investigation progressed, it was determined that Marlow was under the influence of a controlled substance and subsequently placed under arrest. Further investigation revealed Marlow was in possession of a loaded Glock .40 cal handgun that had the serial numbers removed, a 25- round extended magazine, 4 pounds of methamphetamine, 25 grams of Fentanyl, 19 grams of black tar heroin, 27 suboxone strips and $1,900.00 in cash. On Wednesday morning, February 9 shortly after 12 am, the Greenfield Police and Fire Departments responded to a commercial structure fire at California Gourmet Pizza, located on the 500 block of Walnut Avenue. When emergency personnel arrived, the entire structure was engulfed in flames. Fire agencies as far as Salinas responded and assisted with putting the fire out, but the building suffered major structural damage. As of this time, fire crews are still in the area and are asking that you avoid the 500 block of Walnut Avenue. This incident is being investigated by Greenfield Police and fire investigators. City of King to Close Forden Park Playground Temporarily

The City of King has temporarily closed the playground at Forden Park for repairs to the playground surface beginning on Tuesday, February 8 and lasting until February 15. The remainder of the park will remain open for public use. The form surface will be repaired and resealed. The project is part of an effort of ongoing maintenance of the City’s parks to ensure they remain in operational and safe condition. Paso Robles Police Department Arrest Sexual Assault Suspect

PASO ROBLES – On Tuesday morning, February 8 at around 3:00 a.m., the Paso Robles Police Department received a call regarding a sexual assault on the 400 block of Kenton Court. The investigation revealed a male suspect broke into a home and sexually assaulted a female adult victim who was asleep at the time. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of responding Officers. The Department’s police canine (K9 Renzo) was used to track the suspect to a nearby house where officers contacted and identified 30-year-old Paso Robles resident Courtney Quiros. Quiros was arrested and transported to the SLO County Jail for several felonies relating to the burglary and sexual assault. This is an ongoing investigation, and the Paso Robles Police Department is requesting anyone with any information to call the PRPD at (805) 237-6464.

Man Arrested in Greenfield After Probation Compliance Check

On Tuesday morning, February 8 at 6:09 am Greenfield Police officers, with the assistance of Soledad Police Department conducted a probation compliance check off of Ventana Avenue at the home of 38-year-old Rodrigo Morales. During the search, ammunition and drug paraphernalia were located. Morales was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.

Paso Robles Police Department Investigateing Death Involving Train

PASO ROBLES – On Monday afternoon, February 7 at around 4:30 p.m., the Paso Robles Police Department received a call regarding a pedestrian who was struck by an Amtrak train near the 3400 Block of Riverside Ave. Officers from the Paso Robles Police Department and paramedics from the Paso Robles Emergency Services arrived on scene and located a single victim under the train. The female victim was declared deceased on the scene. The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking southbound on the tracks when she was struck by a northbound Amtrak train headed to Seattle from Los Angeles. The Paso Robles Police Department and the SLO County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. This is an ongoing investigation, and the Paso Robles Police Department is requesting anyone with any information to call the PRPD at (805) 237-6464.

Miss California Rodeo Salinas Contest Opens February 14; Become an Ambassador for the Largest Rodeo in California

SALINAS, CA, February 7, 2022 - Young ladies who are passionate about the western lifestyle and promoting the rodeo industry can run for the title of Miss California Rodeo Salinas and become an ambassador for the largest professional rodeo in the state. Countywide Striping Project begins February 7

Roadway improvement projects for several County intersections within unincorporated Carmel, South County, North County and rural areas of Salinas will begin Monday, February 7, 2022 with an anticipated completion date of February 11, 2022. Improvements will include installation of new stop line and stop legend markings at various locations in Chualar, San Ardo, Bradley, Lockwood, Carmel (Atherton Drive), Spreckels and the Aromas/Moss Landing areas. Project areas are shown in the attached maps. Work will begin in the South County communities, and will conclude in the North County area. Work hours for this project will be from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Traffic control measures will be in place and motorists may experience periodic delays. Every effort is being made to accommodate commuters and complete the work as safely and quickly as possible.

2 Vehicle Wreck in Soledad

A 2 vehicle collision happened in Soledad sometime after 2:30 PM on Monday, February 7. According to the Soledad PD for unknown reasons, a southbound driver crossed over the double yellow line on Front Street and struck another vehicle, traveling northbound, head-on. The accident caused three people to be injured, one of which needed to be transported to a hospital. Traffic was backed up at the intersection for about 45 minutes until they were able to get the lanes in that area cleared.

1 Vehicle Rollover Outside of King City

1 vehicle overturned off of Jolon Road and Oasis Road a few miles outside of King City at 1:10 am on Monday, February 7. The Pine Canyon Fire Department along with CAL FIRE BEU responded to the scene to assist. One person was transported to a local area hospital to be treated. The cause of the accident is unknown.

Man in Soledad Arrested on 6 Felony Counts After Negligently Shooting Gun in Apartment

On Friday night, February 4 shortly after 11:30 PM Soledad Police Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Market Street for a report of a bullet hole in an apartment bathroom. Officers conducted an exterior check of the building and determined it was impossible for the bullet to have traveled into the residence by any other means than through a shared wall with neighbors. The Soledad PD's patrol team notified one of their Detectives who responded to the scene and advised that a search warrant was in order for the neighbor. While the search warrant was being completed, officers from the Greenfield Police Department, and deputies from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office arrived to assist with taking control of the suspect's residence and his vehicle, while a Judge signed a warrant. Suspect Wanted in Shooting Incident in Soledad Turns Himself In

According to the Soledad Police Department, Xavier Diaz suspected of shooting a man on the 1300 block of Santa Clara in Soledad on Wednesday morning, February 2 at around 10 am walked into the Monterey County Jail and self-surrendered on Thursday night, February 3. The victim in the shooting as of Thursday evening, February 3 is still in the Natividad Medical Center ICU in Salinas in critical condition. The Soledad PD thanks everyone that called their Investigations Unit, used the WeTip line, and shared their post on their Facebook page. A $1 million dollar arrest warrant was issued for Diaz on Thursday morning, February 3.
