Rep. Panetta Secures $67 Million in Federal Funds for the Pajaro River Flood Risk Management Project

SALINAS, CA – On Wednesday, March 30 U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced that he secured $67 million in federal funding for the Pajaro River Flood Risk Management Project. Greenfield High School Student Arrested for Drug Sales

Greenfield School Resource Officer (SRO) Dyels initiated an investigation of the sales of drugs to students on campus. A 17-year-old student of Greenfield High School was identified and arrested as a result of Officer Dyels’ investigation. On Monday, March 28 officers from the Greenfield Police Department, with the assistance of Soledad Police Department, served a search warrant at the student’s home in King City. Simultaneously, officers contacted the student at school where the student was found to be in possession of marijuana vape pens, pre-rolled marijuana “joints,” and over $280 in cash. At the student’s home, officers recovered packaged marijuana vape pens, a scale, a smoking pipe, a cell phone labeled “trap phone,” and over $1,500 in cash. The student was arrested for illegal transportation of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell. 1 Vehicle Rollover in Templeton

1 vehicle overturned off of Las Tablas Road and South Bethel Road in Templeton between 1 pm and 1:30 pm on Friday, March 25. According to the CHP, the vehicle involved in the accident was a red KIA that was on it's roof when fire, police and emergency responders arrived on the scene. Major injuries from the wreck were reported. The cause of the collision is unknown.

Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 in South Monterey County for the Week of March 27

Highway 101: First Street: March 28 – April 1 There will be full closures of the northbound and southbound Highway 101 on and off ramps at First Street for paving operation work from 8 am to 4 pm. Highway 101: Canal Street: March 31 – April 1 There will be full closures of the northbound Highway 101 on ramp at Canal Street for paving operation work from 8 am to 4 pm. Highway 101: Camp Roberts Rest Areas: Long-Term There will be full closure of the Camp Roberts Rest Areas on northbound and southbound Highway 101 for work to upgrade the facility from 10 am to 12 pm. Highway 101: First Street – Jolon Road, King City: Long-Term There will be one lane closure along northbound and southbound Highway 101 from First Street to Jolon Road for roadway excavation and pavement work from 8 am to 4 pm. Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Paso Robles Community Services Department; Reaching Out to Children in Need; Kits provide comfort, distraction, and enrichment

PASO ROBLES, CA March 25, 2022 The Paso Robles City Library and Recreation Services divisions are pleased to partner with local agencies in providing Comfort Kits to children and families struggling with such situations as homelessness, trauma, or crisis. To date, over 80 kits have been distributed to ECHO, the Paso Robles Fire Department, and the Paso Robles Police Department. According to Youth Services Librarian Melissa Bailey, the idea for these kits began with the library’s goal to increase community outreach and a timely offer from ASB President Malia Gaviola to donate extra books from a recent high school book drive. Reaching out to ECHO first with the idea of supplying bags of books with some supplies for children entering the shelter, Bailey set about selecting items that would offer children and teens comfort, distraction, and enrichment in both the short-term and over time. Woman in Gonzales Arrested for Assault With a Deadly Weapon Incident

According to the Gonzales Police Department, Officers took into custody Elizabeth Garcia on Wednesday, March 23 sometime after 10 am after they were paged to the 100 block of 7th Street about a fight that was in progress. Officers were advised that one of the subjects was armed with a knife. They later found that Garcia was suspected of striking another person with a deadly weapon. Garcia was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.

City of King Awarded T-Mobile Hometown Grant for the Visitor and History Center Project

T-Mobile announced on Thursday, March 24 that King City was selected as one of 25 communities nationwide to be awarded funding through their Hometown Grant program. King City will receive $50,000 to go towards the cost of its Visitor and History Center project. A formal check presentation ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 24 at 12:30 p.m. in front of the facility at 110 N. Vanderhurst Avenue. The public is invited to attend. Juvenile in Greenfield Arrested for Attempted Murder

According to the Greenfield Police Department, Detectives on Wednesday, March 23 arrested a second shooter in an attempted murder incident that happened in 2021. The Greenfield PD's investigation which consisted of viewing hours of home and city camera footage, speaking with witnesses, following-up on tips from community members, and several search warrants, led detectives to a 16-year-old juvenile as the second suspect in the February 11, 2021 shooting that took place on the 200 block of 13th Street. Although both suspects in this case have been taken into custody, the investigation is ongoing. California Microbusiness COVID-19 relief grant program in Monterey County

March 23, 2022, Salinas, CA -- In order to support small businesses facing financial impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Monterey County Workforce Development Board, in partnership with the California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA) has established the COVID-19 Microbusiness Grant fund. The fund will provide grants to eligible small businesses experiencing economic stresses caused by the pandemic. At a minimum $455,000 is available for at least 180 businesses to receive grants of $2,500 apiece. The application period will open on March 28, 2022 and continue until funding is exhausted. Jimmy Panetta announced that the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $4 million American Rescue Plan Travel, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation program grant to the city of Santa Cruz, California, to develop new arts and entertainment infrastructure within the Tannery Arts Center and increase tourism to the region. California Transportation Commission Reserves $7.5 Million for Phase 1 of King City’s Accelerated Access Rail Platform & Multi-Modal Transit Center

On March 16, the California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved a $7.5 million rail reserve from the Interregional Improvement Program for Phase 1 of King City’s Accelerated Access Rail Platform and Multi-Modal Transit Center (MMTC). This represents a significant first step in funding the $28 million needed for construction of Phase I and can be leveraged to help obtain the additional funding. Vegetation Fire Knocked Down on North River Road in Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 8:28 a.m. on Monday March 21, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to the area of North River Road and Sulphur Springs for a reported vegetation fire. The first arriving unit reported approximately 1⁄4 acre burning within the Salinas Riverbed with difficult access. Accessing the fire was aided using the recently purchased type 3 fire apparatus with 4-wheel drive capabilities. Fire was quickly contained upon arrival and fully extinguished within one hour. Three fire engines and two Battalion Chief’s from Paso Robles responded. Additional responding units under the cities Automatic Aid Agreements were cancelled prior to their arrival. The cause of the fire was determined to be from an unattended fire within a homeless encampment. 1 Vehicle Wreck on Highway 101 in Soledad Near Railroad Tracks

A 1 vehicle collision took place involving a small sedan on Highway 101 Southbound at Front Street in Soledad landing near some railroad tracks sometime after 10:30 am on Monday morning, March 21. The vehicle reportedly crashed into a chain link fence, 2 metal poles and 2 signs. Injuries from the accident were reported. The cause of the crash is unknown.

Big Rig vs Sedan Accident on Highway 101 Outside of Salinas

A 2 vehicle accident happened on Monday morning, March 21 sometime between 7 am and 8 am on Highway 101 Northbound south of Salinas at Hartnell Road involving a big rig and a sedan. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of the big rig truck cut off the sedan after making an illegal U-turn. The sedan rear-ended the truck and was lodged under the trailer. There were 4 people in the sedan that included 3 children. All 3 children were transported to a hospital in the Bay Area by helicopter, while the driver was taken to a hospital in Salinas. No information has been provided regarding their conditions. Caltrans reported that the right slow lane and the left turn lane to Hartnell Road were shutdown for an extended period of time as crews worked to clear up debris from the crash. The wreck is still under investigation.

ATV Accident in Bryson Herperia Area on March 20

On Sunday, March 20 at around 3 pm an ATV accident occurred near Copperhead in the Bryson Herperia area of South Monterey County. The driver of the ATV was injured and ended up being transported by Mercy Air 34 to Natividad Hospital in Salinas. 2 DUI Arrests Were Made and 21 Citations Were Issued at King City DUI Checkpoint on March 18

King City, Calif. – On March 18, 2022, officers from the King City Police Department with assistance from the King City Area Office of the California Highway Patrol, conducted a DUI checkpoint on Broadway Street at Canal Street from 6:00 pm until 11:15 pm. DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads. Over 400 hundred vehicles passed through the checkpoint and two drivers were subsequently arrested for DUI. An additional twenty-one drivers were issued citations for operating a motor vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license. One individual was arrested for other criminal charges. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Recognizing the current decline in cases and hospitalizations, beginning on Monday, March 21, 2022, the face covering requirement and public health screenings for both the public and county employees will cease at all County facilities, EXCEPT in facilities covered by a State mandate, including healthcare facilities, jails and juvenile hall. While no longer required, wearing masks when in a crowded situation or around those you do not know is strongly recommended. A 3.4 magnitude earthquake rattled 22 miles northeast of King City, in an unincorporated area of San Benito County on Friday, March 18 at 7:16 am. The US Geological Survey reports that the quake was at a depth of about 9 miles. No damages or injuries were reported.

Assault With A Deadly Weapon and Stabbing Incident in Paso Robles

Paso Robles, CA,- On March 17, 2022, at approximately 10:18pm, the Paso Robles Police Department received a call from an employee at WalMart off of 180 Niblick Road who reported that he located a victim of an apparent stabbing laying in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they located victim as 32-year-old Christopher Thatcher of Paso Robles, laying in the parking lot suffering from multiple stabs wounds, and a possible punctured lung. It was determined that Thatcher had been stabbed in the back and torso at least seven times, and once in the head. He was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital for emergency care. Thatcher was unable to provide any information as to who assaulted him, why the assault occurred, or where it occurred. Officers were able to track a blood trail toward the Salinas Riverbed area, but were unable to determine specifically where the assault occurred.
