Riverbed Vegetation Fire Put Out in Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES, CA – On Saturday May 29, 2021, at approximately 7:09 AM Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a vegetation fire in the riverbed south of the Highway 46 East bridge. First arriving firefighters found a 10 by 10 spot fire actively burning around trees and brush. Firefighters were able to contain the fire within 10 minutes and worked to fully extinguish the fire over the next half hour. Two fire engines and one Battalion Chief responded. Assistance was also provided by the Paso Robles Police Department. The cause of the fire was found to be human in nature with no suspects noted at the scene. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the Paso Robles Police Department at 805-237-6464. Residential Structure Fire in Paso Robles Knocked Down

PASO ROBLES, CA – On Friday, May 28 at 3:15 p.m. Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded to 809 Wade Drive for a reported residential structure fire. Firefighters arrived at scene to discover the house completely charged with smoke. The crews were able to quickly locate the fire and contain it to the kitchen where it originated. There were no occupants in the house at the time of the fire. Three fire engines, two Battalion Chiefs and a Fire Investigator from Paso Robles responded. Under the City’s automatic aid agreement, two fire engines and one Battalion Chief from CAL FIRE/SLO County and one fire engine form Atascadero Fire immediately responded to assist. Additional assistance was provided by the Paso Robles Police Department and the San Luis Obispo Fire Investigation Strike Team. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Dr. Charles Harris Appointed as Interim Chief Executive Officer for Natividad Medical Center

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors and Natividad Medical Center Board of Trustees announce the appointment of Dr. Charles (Chad) Harris as interim Chief Executive Officer. He will step into this temporary position as Dr. Gary Gray, the hospital’s longtime CEO retires. Dr. Harris was selected as a candidate for the interim CEO position through an internal recruitment. San Jose Shooting Victims Include Native of Greenfield

9 people including a gunman were killed in a shooting at a public transit rail yard in San Jose on Wednesday, May 26. A report on Thursday, May 27 indicates that one of the people killed in the shooting was Greenfield native 49-year-old Tim Romo the son of former Greenfield Mayor and Chief of Police Mike Romo. Tim Romo's mom Reggie Romo worked at a school in South Monterey County in the cafeteria for many years. In addition to Tim Romo's parents he also leaves behind 2 sisters, Barbara and Heidi, 2 brothers, Robert and Eric along with his wife Annette, kids Tristian, Scott, Audrey and grandchildren.

Semi Big Rig Stuck on Highway 101 in King City transporting Ag Equipment Causes Traffic Delays

Ag equipment that was hauled on a big rig Semi ended up getting stuck on the right side of the Salinas River Bridge on Highway 101 Northbound in King City on Thursday, May 27 at 2:45 pm. Local construction crews were safely able to pull the equipment over to the Jolon Road offramp. The issue backed up traffic for about an hour and was diverted. No injuries were reported.

Greenfield Man Arrested on Weapons Charges

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip about a man carrying a gun at work and scaring his co-workers. Detectives began the investigation by positively identifying and locating the suspect as 22-year old Adrian Castro of Greenfield on Wednesday night, May 26. Sheriff's Deputies stopped and arrested Castro on his way to work on Thursday morning, May 27 and discovered that he was in possession of a Ruger LCP handgun. Castrro was booked into the Monterey county jail for possession of a loaded firearm in a public place and violation of probation.

King City PD Busts 3 Men Suspected of a Homicide in 2016 and 2017

The King City Police Department held a Press Conference on Thursday, May 27 to report that they've made 3 arrests involving a homicide that occurred in 2016 and in 2017. The King City PD states that they believe that one of the suspects had something to do with the murder of Martin Heredia in 2016 and Hipolito Carreno in 2017. As part of the investigation law enforcement served search warrants in the Pine Canyon area, Greenfield and Chualar arresting three suspects on Thursday, May 27. One of the suspects, identified as 25-year-old Kendricks Perez of Pine Canyon is believed to be involved in both murders. Perez was arrested on Broadway Circle and booked into the Monterey County Jail on 2 homicide charges. Police also arrested 25-year-old John Samuel Thomas Trivino of Greenfield. Investigators believe he was involved with the murder of Martin Heredia. Trivino was found near Highway 101 and Market Street in Salinas and booked into the Monterey County Jail, while a suspect in the mur

Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 in Monterey County now at 43,709 with 43,657 people released from isolation

Updated numbers from the Monterey County Health Department on Wenesday, May 26 report that confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the County are now at 43,709 people, while 43,657 people have been released from isolation and 247,951 people have been tested in the County. 12,860 of the cases are out of South Monterey County which include 2,179 in King City, 2,748 in Greenfield, 6,117 in Soledad, 1,372 in Gonzales, 106 in San Ardo, 200 in Chualar, 68 in San Lucas, while 20 cases are from other cities or towns in South Monterey County. There have also been 28 cases reported in Bradley and 22 in San Miguel. In addition, 11,436 are from person to person transmissions, 4,805 have come from community transmissions, 7 are currently hospitalized, 385 people have died, 23,386 are under investigation and 3,671 people who work in Agriculture have come down with COVID-19.

Fort Hunter Liggett Police Department reminds drivers about the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt this spring, during the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) national Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from May 24 to June 6, 2021. “We want the act of buckling up to become automatic to all drivers and passengers,” said Officer William Keefer, FHL Police Department. “It’s not just a safe thing to do – it’s the law. During the Click It or Ticket campaign, we’ll be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across local and state lines to ensure the message gets out to drivers and passengers. Buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash. We see the results of not wearing a seat belt all the time. We see the loss of life. Congressman Panetta Statement on Agreement on Offshore Wind Project in Morro Bay; Agreement will help establish Central Coast as renewable energy powerhouse

SALINAS, CA – On Tuesday, May 25 Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) joined Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) and the White House in announcing an agreement on the size and scope of leasing to allow for offshore wind development off California’s Central Coast in Morro Bay. The area available for offshore wind development would span 399 square miles, enough to produce 3GW of energy, which represents the largest proposed floating offshore wind project in the United States. The project will be located in Northern San Luis Obispo County, outside of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Monterey County. King City Man Who Raped a Child During a Home Burglary Sentenced to Life Without Parole

SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Tuesday, May 25 that the Honorable Rafael Vasquez sentenced Leonardo Ramirez Jr., age 28, to life without the possibility of parole after he was found guilty at a jury trial for violently raping a 10-year-old girl, during the commission of a residential burglary in which he had the intent to commit a sex offense. On February 3, 2018, around 7 am, the young who was 10 years of age woke up to a man in her bedroom pulling down her pajama pants. The man was wearing a mask over his entire face, gloves, a dark hoody, and was holding what looked like a black handgun. When the girl tried to scream for help, he covered her mouth and nose and told her to shut up as he pointed the gun at her head. She was scared for her life and complied. He then raped her and fled the scene. The girl told her family that morning and they called the police. The girl received numerous injuries from the assault and felt pa

King City PD Arrest 1 man for Vandalism and other charges

On Monday night, May 24 at 11pm King City Police Officers were dispatched to the alley behind North Vanderhurst and North 3rd Street for a report of loud noise coming from a vehicle that was parked. Officers arrived shortly after and observed three males. Two males ran away when the police car approached, while third male 20-year-old William Eliseo Perez Vidal of King City was observed by officers putting down a spray paint can on the ground. Officers observed a large amount of fresh gang-related graffiti on the alley fence. Perez Vidal failed to comply with the officers commands and was taken into custody. He was transported by the King City Police Department to the Monterey County Jail for processing. He was charged with: PC 1203.2(a) - Violation of Probation - Felony. Graffiti and Fire Vandalism at Business in Greenfield

The Greenfield Police Department and Fire Department are investigating vandalism that occurred at Dr. George Ingham's Dental Office located off of Oak Avenue on Saturday, May 22. Flammable liquids were thrown into the Business burning the flooring and there was also smoke damage. No one was injured. Dr. Ingham's Office and 2 other Businesses in Greenfield on Oak Avenue were also spray painted with graffiti. Dr. Ingham said that his business will be closed all of the rest of the week of May 23, 2021 and maybe all of the week of May 30, 2021 to clean things up inside in his Office. Obit of Thomas Paul Vaughan of the Soledad Mission District

Thomas Paul Vaughan, 68, of the Soledad Mission District, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, May 17, 2021 with his sons and daughter-in-law by his side. He was born in Salinas on November 22, 1952. Tommy was the second child of eight children born to Paul and Alice Vaughan of the Soledad Mission District. He attended Mission Union Elementary and Gonzales High School. In 1971 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He did his basic training on Alameda Island, and his first tour of active duty in the state of Washington. He was stationed in Monterey Bay while in the Reserves. He began farming on the family ranch at a young age, and continued farming with his Dad and brothers for most of his adult life. Growing up in the Mission District with such a big family, there was never a dull moment. As the eldest boy, Tommy led the family in all types of fun and mischief. Paso Robles man Arrested for Weapons, Drug Possession and other charges

On Sunday night, May 23 Paso Robles patrol officers received a call of a possible DUI driver swerving and nearly causing collisions. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on the driver 29-year-old Rocc Collins of Paso Robles. During field sobriety tests, Collins fled on foot, jumping (and disappearing) into a large 10 x 20 bush. Collins refused to come out of the bush and Patrol Officers called for a K9. After hearing the K9 barking, Collins gave up. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, officers located a loaded 9mm handgun, meth, fentanyl, cannabis, and Xanax. Collins was booked into the SLO county jail on multiple charges stemming from the drugs and loaded handgun.

Paso Robles man Arrested for Firearms Possession and other charges

On Sunday, May 23 Paso Robles Police officers and detectives began investigating an altercation that occurred on the 3100 block of Park Street. Officers identified a suspect, 20-year-old Jose Jimenez of Paso Robles who is believed to have pulled a gun on another individual, while threatening to shoot him. Jimenez is also suspected of throwing a hammer through the sunroof of the victim’s car. Officers have reason to believe this incident is gang-related. PRPD detectives obtained a search warrant for Jimenez’s residence located on the 3100 Block of Spring Street. On Monday, May 24 shortly after 11:00 am detectives located Jimenez at the Presidio Apartment Complex located at 3200 Spring Street and he was arrested without incident on various charges stemming from the altercation. Detectives served a search warrant at Jimenez’s residence and located an M1 Garand 30 caliber rifle and an unserialized Glock-style 9mm pistol (loaded). This will make it the first Army installation capable of generating and distributing electricity off-grid for at least 14 days throughout the entire cantonment. The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is currently caring for 160 wild patients, including many baby birds. This time of year, our local swallow populations are building their nests and laying their eggs. You can help keep them safe. Swallows are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. It is illegal to destroy a nest with eggs or chicks inside, however inactive nests can be removed. Swallows are beautiful birds who are not only a joy to watch swoop and fly, but also consume hundreds of insects every day, providing exceptional pest control. If you do not want swallows nesting on your property: Remove old nests before swallows arrive. It is illegal and inhumane to remove them once the birds have started using them. Place physical barriers on potential nesting sites. Wash away nests in construction (not in use) frequently. Parolee Arrested After Family Dispute in Greenfield

On Thursday, May 20 at about 10:30 A.M. Greenfield Police Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Calaveras Way for a family dispute in Greenfield. The investigation showed that the suspect made criminal threats towards a family member and was a parolee at large with a violent criminal history. With the assistance of the California State Parole and California Department of Corrections Crisis Response Team, the suspect was safely taken into custody at the residence. Although students were at home for distant learning there was still staff and other personnel on campus; therefore, Mary Chapa Academy was temporarily placed on lockdown. Monterey County DA Conducts Operations Against Unlicensed Cannabis Cultivators and Eradicates Dangerous Product in South Monterey County

Monterey, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Friday, May 21 that during the month of May, 2021, the District Attorney’s Office’s Bureau of Investigations in cooperation with the Department of Fish and Wildlife and other state and local agencies conducted cannabis enforcement operations targeting unlicensed cannabis cultivators in south Monterey County. In total, these operations resulted in the eradication and destruction of approximately 5 tons of illegal cannabis. Similar enforcement actions will continue throughout the year. In California, cannabis cultivation for personal and recreational use is legal; however, cultivating over 6 plants is presumed to be for business purposes and, therefore, requires a state and local cultivation license. Cultivation over this limit without the requisite licenses violates both criminal and civil laws, and may result in a felony conviction, substantial fines and fees, and civil liability. The illegal

1 Man Charged for Murder, while 1 Man and a Juvenile Were Arrested on Weapons Charges After Search Warrants in Soledad and Greenfield

18 law enforcement agency teams served 7 search warrants simultaneously in the cities of Soledad and Greenfield on Friday, May 21 for a fatal shooting that occurred in Soledad on April 17, 2021. David Madrigal was taken into custody for the murder of Gregory Velasquez, Gabriel Hernandez was taken into custody for possession of a "Ghost Gun," while a 17-year-old juvenile was taken into custody for possession of a pistol grip AK-47 with the serial number obliterated. Madrigal and Hernandez were booked into the Monterey County Jail and the juvenile was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall. The shooting death of Gregory Velasquez happened on the 400 block of Tiburon Place that the Soledad Police Investigations Division investigated for over a month. Student Earns 4 Hartnell College Degrees While Still at Soledad High School

Most mortals concede the limits of Earth’s 24-hour spin and yearly lap around the Sun, but Leily Garcia has defied both on her way to today’s 2021 Hartnell College Commencement, on May 21. Just 16 years old, Garcia has earned four Hartnell degrees and this fall will enter the University of California, Los Angeles at roughly a mid-sophomore level. She plans to study biology and continue on to medical school. Not incidentally, this first-generation college student also will receive a diploma on June 12 as the youngest member of the Soledad High School class of ’21, with a weighted GPA of 4.6. Her Hartnell GPA is 3.8, earning her summa cum laude honors. Keith Boyd Appointed as New King City Police Chief

Steve Adams, City Manager of King City announced on Thursday, May 20 the appointment of Keith Boyd as the City’s new Chief of Police. Boyd was selected following an extensive recruitment, selection and background review process. WASHINGTON – On Thursday, May 20 the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $620,000 grant to the city of Santa Cruz, California, to make critical infrastructure improvements needed to expand usable business space in the city. A talk on ZOOM about the history of The Indians Ranch in the Los Padres National Forest is planned for Saturday, May 22 at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited. The event is being sponsored by the San Antonio Valley Historical Association as a replacement for its annual Spring Tour of areas in Southern Monterey County. The Special guest will be Leonard Tavernetti, a former King City resident, who is the author of Sagebrush Shangri-La, a description of the Indians Ranch in the 1940s and 1950s. Additional insight will be given by Thomas Pettitt, son of former owners of the ranch, Jim and Helen Pettitt, and Leonard’s brother David Tavernetti. All three men grew up visiting the ranch in their youth.
