Rep. Lofgren Announces Nearly $12.5 Million for Wastewater Infrastructure in San Juan Bautista

  WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, May 16 U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren announced that the City of San Juan Bautista will receive $12,492,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in a combination of grants and low-cost federal loans to improve wastewater infrastructure.   “Proper water infrastructure – that prevents contamination and allows for clean drinking water – is a basic need in communities. I applaud this federal funding that will protect our environment and ensure people stay healthy. Thanks in part to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which House Democrats passed in the last Congress, neighbors in San Juan Bautista will have cleaner and safer water resources,” said Rep. Chair Lofgren Announces Nearly $64 Million for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in California

  WASHINGTON, DC – On Tuesday, May 14 U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-18), the elected chair of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation (CDCD), announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHA) will distribute $63,702,988 to the California Department of Transportation to repair and replace electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.   “Climate change poses a serious threat, and investments must be made in sensible and environmentally-friendly solutions like electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This important federal funding will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote EV adoption, expand the EV workforce, and spur economic growth across California,” said Rep. City of King Unfunded Priority Needs Plan Public Hearing on May 14

The City of King has made substantial progress over the past several years in becoming financially solvent.  It has come from a $5 million negative General Fund balance to a reserve of over $3 million while addressing a number of other priorities.  2023 was the first time the City had a positive General Fund balance in 20 years.   However, since the City went through such a lengthy financial crisis, there are a number of important needs that have been deferred over a long period of time that are not currently funded.  The King City City Council recently approved a draft 12-year plan of the highest priority needs that remain unfunded, which have been identified as street improvements, facility improvements, increased public safety staffing, street and park maintenance staffing and long-term financial stability.      Over the past several months, the City has been undertaking a number of community outreach efforts to educate everyone on the components of the plan.   A 2 vehicle wreck took place off of Highway 101 Northbound and Los Coches Road outside of King City at 1:26 pm on Monday afternoon, May 13. Minor injuries were reported as a result of the accident.

Fatal 2 Vehicle Crash on Highway 68 Outside of Salinas on May 10

The Monterey CHP reports that at least 2 people were tragically killed as a result of a fatal 2 vehicle collision on Highway 68 at Spreckels Boulevard outside of Salinas at 4:40 pm on Friday afternoon, May 10. The westbound number 2 lane was closed for several hours, while Offramp at Spreckles was also shutdown. The cause of the accident is unknown.

  A 1 vehicle crash happened on Highway 101 Southbound and Arroyo Seco Road outside of Greenfield at 4:04 pm on Friday afternoon, May 10. No injuries were reported.

3 Men Arrested for Mass Shooting in King City, Double Homicide in South Monterey County and Armed Robbery Incident in Salinas

  On Friday May 10, 2024, at 9:00 AM, The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, King City Police Department and Salinas Police Department held a joint press conference to announce that arrests have been made related to the King City mass shooting that occurred on March 3, 2024 that left 4 people dead and the South Monterey County double homicide that occurred on February 4, 2024 that resulted in the deaths of 2 cousins. Also announced were charges related to a Salinas Armed Robbery. Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto stood present with representatives from the nearly 30 local, regional, state and federal law enforcement agencies that assisted in the ongoing investigation into these tragic incidents. She presented details of the South Monterey County double homicide that occurred on February 4, 2024, that left cousins Andres Garcia and Jack Canchola dead of apparent gunshot wounds.   (PASO ROBLES, CA) – Online applications for the 2024 California Mid-State Fair’s Mission Market Place are now available. The Mission Market Place is designed to showcase the Central Coast’s best products and locally made goods. It will give twenty artisans, growers, and producers a home to showcase their items to over 330,000 fairgoers. Product examples could include artisan cheeses, honey, olive oil, vinegars, almonds, walnuts, teas, coffees, dried fruit, spices, jerky, preserved food, hand crafted and repurposed items, and products that have a unique story to the Central Coast. The Fair will provide each of the participants with product placement in the Mission Market Place located in Estrella Hall, the Fair’s largest indoor commercial building, along with staffing of the area.   Tri-County Collaborative has been awarded a CDPH Fentanyl Overdose Prevention Grant to Tackle Rising Overdose Rates. Tuesday, May 7, marked Fentanyl Awareness Day; a day dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and its devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities worldwide. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, is approximately 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine and has contributed to a staggering rise in opioid-related deaths in recent years. Unbeknownst to people using drugs, fentanyl is frequently and cheaply mixed into other substances like counterfeit prescription pills and other drugs. Combined with its potency, this makes it a particularly lethal substance, often leading to accidental poisonings, overdoses, and fatalities, even in small doses. SPCA Wildlife Center Continues to Rescue Pelicans in Distress

  SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is continuing to rescue pelicans in distress.  The SPCA Wildlife Center has rescued 52 pelicans since April 19, including 12 from another wildlife rescue that asked for assistance.  The pelicans are all thin or emaciated with poor blood values. They are unable to fly and in need of immediate rescue.  The SPCA Wildlife Center is stabilizing the rescued pelicans, most of which are in serious to critical condition. The pelicans eat 25 to 50 pounds of fish per day.  Monetary donations are greatly appreciated to help the nonprofit SPCA Monterey County purchase the food and supplies needed for the pelicans and all their wild patients. Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to Host Memorial Service on May 8 in Salinas Honoring Deputies Who Have Lost Their Lives In The Line Of Duty

On Wednesday May 8, 2024, at 1:00 PM, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office will host a public memorial service to honor the memories of the 10 deputies who have lost their lives in the line of duty during the nearly 174-year history of the department. Man in King City Arrested on May 3 for Stabbing Incident

  On Thursday night, May 2, 2024, at approximately 10:00 PM Officers from the King City Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Broadway Street for a report of a stabbing incident.       Upon arrival, Officers contacted the victim, a 40-year-old male, who reported that 42-year-old Rene Correa had stabbed him in the upper torso near his shoulder. The victim was transported to Natividad Medical Center for his stab wound where he is listed in stable condition.      Officers and Detectives from the King City PD authored a search warrant for the suspect's residence serving it in the morning hours of Friday, May 3, 2024. Greenfield Man Busted in Motorcycle Chase in Templeton on May 2

  CHP officers and other law enforcement agencies arrested 25-year-old Seth Peyton Mays of Greenfield man in Templeton on Thursday, May 2 as a result of a motorcycle pursuit that started in Monterey County. The chase began at around 7:49 a.m. when a King City CHP officer attempted to overtake the high-speed motorcycle traveling 130 mph on southbound Highway 101 near Jolon Road. A CHP helicopter found the motorcycle matching the description traveling at 110 mph. Despite multiple attempts both in Monterey County and then in SLO County to pull over the motorcycle, the rider intentionally accelerated to speeds in excess of 140 mph while splitting traffic prior to fleeing westbound on State Route 46 West towards Cambria. East of the Vineyard Drive roundabout, officers again attempted to stop the motorcycle and the rider passed over double yellow lines at high rates of speed in an attempt to elude capture.
