SPCA Wildlife Center Rescues Baby Opossums Stuck in Glue Traps

During the week of July 9, the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Center rescued two young opossums who were stuck in glue traps in Marina. Without emergency rescue, the opossums would have suffered and died.  Each year, countless animals are unintentionally caught in glue traps. Glue traps are paper sheets or tubes covered in a sticky glue, which causes animals to become stuck and unable to escape. These traps cause prolonged suffering as the animal struggles against the glue in an attempt to free itself, and eventually succumbs to injuries, exhaustion, starvation, or dehydration.  While these inhumane traps are designed for insects and rodents, they are indiscriminate and often catch unintended victims like songbirds, snakes, lizards, and small mammals like these opossums. Removing animals from glue traps must be done by a professional, as the glue can pull off feathers, fur, and skin, or even break the bones of smaller animals.  Skilled SPCA wildlife rescue technicians carefully remove

SPCA: Hot Weather Advisory for Pets

Temperatures in Monterey County are expected to be very hot in the coming days. SPCA Monterey County advises pet owners that high temperatures can be dangerous for pets, especially since our pets are not acclimated to this sudden weather change.   Pets should be kept indoors or be provided with ample shaded areas.  Fresh water must be available at all times.    Children and pets should not be left unattended in enclosed vehicles.  On a warm day, a parked car’s interior can reach over 120 degrees in less than five minutes, even with the windows partially open, causing brain damage or death.   It is important to keep in mind that conditions in our area change constantly. A shady spot on a foggy day can quickly transition to direct, hot sunlight.  California Penal Code section 597.7 prohibits leaving an animal in an unattended motor vehicle under “circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or death to the animal.”  If you see a pet in distress, call
