Man Caught and Arrested in Salinas for Theft of Vehicle and Other Charges

  On Friday night, July 29 Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies were advised of a stolen vehicle driving in the area of a Soledad, with the victim following. A deputy located the stolen vehicle traveling on northbound Highway 101 near Old Stage Road.  The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver, Yonig Maldonado, decided he wasn’t going to stop. He fled from deputies at over 90mph. Maldonado began brake checking deputies and drove on the wrong side of the highway, against the flow of traffic, multiple times in an attempt to evade deputies.  Deputies continued to pursue the vehicle into the city of Salinas on neighborhood streets. Maldonado attempted to get back on northbound Highway 101 at Fairview and deputies used a PIT maneuver to stop the pursuit. Maldonado attempted to turn around and flee northbound again and rammed a deputy’s vehicle. Maldonado was taken into custody and booked into the Monterey County Jail on multiple felony charges. Man in King City Busted for Burglary of Residence

  On Tuesday, July 26 at approximately 1:50 am King City Police Department officers were dispatched to a burglary in the 1200 block of Amherst Drive in King City. Upon arrival, officers learned that a male suspect had entered the residence where he was confronted by the occupants. The suspect seized the property belonging to the occupants and fled. King City Police Department detectives launched a follow-up investigation. The investigation revealed Mariano Flores Diaz as a possible suspect. On Friday, July 29 at 6:30 am a burglary order was served at Diaz’s residence in King City.. Evidence and statements obtained during the investigation confirmed Diaz's involvement in the robbery. Diaz was placed under arrest and registered to the Monterey County Jail for theft. Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 in South Monterey County for the Week of July 31

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures in South Monterey County from Sunday, July 31 through Saturday, August 6.  Highway 101: Elm Avenue – Walnut Avenue: August 1 – August 5 One lane closure will occur along northbound and southbound Highway 101 between Elm Avenue and Walnut Avenue for slope repair work from 6 am to 4 pm. 5 People Detained in Greenfield After Police Officer is Assaulted With a Scooter

  On Wednesday afternoon, July 27 Greenfield Police Officers received multiple reports of a group of males loitering and drinking alcohol in public at an apartment complex on the 200 block of 9th Street.  An officer arrived and contacted five males who appeared to be intoxicated.  One of the males, later identified as 19-year-old, Oswaldo Galindo, attempted to walk away, but was detained by the officer.    As the officer detained Galindo, a second male, later identified as a 16-year-old, ran up to the officer with a metal scooter and raised the scooter in a swinging motion.  Citizens observed this aggressive action and yelled to alert the officer.  The 16-year-old used the scooter to strike the officer on the side of the head and arms, but one of the citizens, who was within feet of the officer, observed that the officer was being attacked and pushed the 16-year-old away from the officer.  This heroic action prevented the officer from further attack. New Fire Chief Appointed for Monterey County Regional Fire Protection District

  The Monterey County Regional Fire Protection District announced on July 26 that Interim Fire Chief David Sargenti is now the permanent chief effective on August 1, 2022. Chief Sargenti has been with the department for 26 years with 19 of those years working as a Chief Officer. Chief Sargenti takes over for Michael Urquides who retired in December of 2021. Chief Sargenti graduated from Palma High School, Hartnell College, and Monterey Peninsula College. Chief Sargenti is a Monterey County native with bachelor’s Degrees in Fire Administration and Fire Prevention Technologies from Cogswell Polytechnical College and a Chief Officer Certification from the California State Board of Fire Services.

River Road Emergency Repair at Fairview Road Project Near Gonzales to Begin on August 2

  Monterey County Officials announced on July 27 that there will be an upcoming full closure of River Road at Fairview Road. A full closure of River Road at Fairview Road near Gonzales will take place from Tuesday, August 2 at 7:00 am to Wednesday, August 31 at 5:00 pm. A detour route around the construction site is available. Travelers are directed to take Highway 101 south to Arroyo Seco via Fort Romie Road to River Road. Travelers heading north are directed to take Highway 101 north to Gonzales exit 310 to Alta Street via Gonzales River Road to River Road. Travelers should expect additional travel time of up to 20 minutes. Message and directional signs will be in place to alert travelers. Please allow extra time for your commute through the area. This closure is necessary so that crews can make repairs to the culvert underneath the roadway. Commercial Vehicle Fire in Paso Robles on July 26

  PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 3:58 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to the 1100 block of Paso Robles Street for a reported vehicle fire. The first arriving unit reported a passenger car on fire inside a semi-truck vehicle transport trailer. Crews were able to quickly get the fire controlled by making access inside to the upper deck level. The fire was confined to the passenger vehicle without significant damage to the transport trailer. Three fire engines and two Chief Officers from Paso Robles Fire responded. Paso Robles Police Department also responded and provided traffic control.

21-year-old Man in Greenfield Dies from Hit and Run Accident; Suspect is Still being Sought by Law Enforcment

  According to the Greenfield Police Department, 21-year-old Oscar Lopez passed away Sunday afternoon, July 24 at Natividad Medical Centera a few days after being hit by a vehicle on the 1100 block of Elm Avenue in Greenfield. Lopez was the victim of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision on July 22 . The driver of the vehicle, Alfonso Benito Herrera, fled the scene and an arrest warrant is still in effect for Herrera who has not been found. The Greenfield PD advises anyone that if you see Alfonso Herrera to call 911 and if you have information on Herrera’s whereabouts to please contact Detective Lerma at 831-601-8376. 

2 Teenagers Detained for Triple Homicide Incident in King City in December of 2021

  The King City Police Department reports that they've arrested 2 more suspects in connection with a triple homicide incident that occurred in December of 2021. Two 17-year-old teens were arrested for 3 counts of murder by the King City PD on Monday, July 25. 20-year-old Carlos Lopez Sanchez, 18-year-old Selena Gonzalez Godoy along with Godoy's unborn child were shot and killed the day after Christmas in King City. A 16-year-old boy was arrested in February of 2022. However, there is still an outstanding arrest warrant for 19-year-old Elizar Ayron Arellano who is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who knows of Arellano's whereabouts are asked to call the King City Police Department at 831-755-5111. 

Vegetation Fire Knocked Down in the Salinas Riverbed in Paso Robles on July 26

  PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 12:39 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to the area south of Niblick Bridge in the Salinas Riverbed for a reported vegetation fire. The first arriving unit reported approximately ¼ acre fire burning within the Salinas Riverbed, to the west on Kohl’s. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire at 1.1 acres because of the grazing fuel abatement work that had been recently completed. Three fire engines and two Chief Officers from Paso Robles responded. Under the cities Automatic Aid Agreement, four fire engines, one bulldozer, one hand crews, one Battalion Chief, one air attack plane from Cal Fire/SLO County Fire, and one fire engine from Atascadero Fire responded. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation but originated adjacent to a homeless encampment.

Paso Robles PD Needs Help Identifying Thieves Who Stole Package from Home on July 20

The Paso Robles Police Department is seeking information about people who stole a package from a front porch of a home on the 500 block of Oaks in Paso Robles on Wednesday, July 20 at about 1:28 pm. The vehicle they were in appears to be a Kia Optima that pulled up to a residence where a male passenger exited the car and stole the package from the porch before the vehicle drove away. Commercial Vehicle Fire in Paso Robles on July 25

  PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 04:05 a.m. on Monday July 25, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to Highway 46 East at Mill Road in Paso Robles for a reported Commercial Vehicle fire. The first arriving unit reported a semi-truck trailer heavily involved with a threat to the adjacent vegetation.  Crews were able to quickly get the fire controlled and made access inside.  The contents of the trailer were determined to be pallets of boxed asparagus. Two fire engines and one Chief Officer from Paso Robles responded. Under the cities Automatic Aid Agreement one fire engine from Cal Fire/SLO County Fire responded.  Paso Robles Police Department also responded and provided traffic control.

Brooke Smith Crowned 2022 Miss California Mid-State Fair!

  (PASO ROBLES, CA) – The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that 17-year-old Brooke Smith of Templeton has been crowned the 2022 Miss California Mid-State Fair Queen and Miss Congeniality. 19-year-old Sarah Barr of Templeton was the 1st Runner Up, 17-year- old Jenna Shapero of Paso Robles was 2nd Runner Up. Brooke Smith is a graduate of Templeton High School and will be attending Cuesta College and her hobbies and interests include jet skiing, horseback riding, and showing animals. She’s part of Templeton FFA and the Rio Rancheros 4-H. For her talent, she interpreted a song in American Sign Language. California Rodeo Salinas Closes Out 112th Year With Championship on Sunday, July 24

  The last performance of the California Rodeo Salinas entertained 15,569 fans at the Salinas Sports Complex. Attendance was up 5.5% over the same performance in 2019, the last year that the Rodeo was held in July, and up 19.6% over the Sunday performance in September of 2021. Total ticket sales for the four performances of the Rodeo totaled 57,449, up 10.5% from 2019. Sunday was Crown Royal Day of Champions, where event winners were presented their buckles, and Man Up Crusade Day, a program that brings awareness to domestic violence. The California Rodeo Salinas partners locally with the YWCA of Monterey County to raise funds and awareness for their non-profit which provides shelter and services to domestic violence victims. California Rodeo Salinas’ 3rd Performance is in The Books

The first of 2 weekend matinee performances of the California Rodeo Salinas entertained 13,851 fans at the Salinas Sports Complex. Attendance was up 18.6% over the same performance in 2019, the last year that the Rodeo was held in July. Veterans and Active Military gained free entry into the event which was presented by Tanimura & Antle. The Special Buckaroos Rodeo was also presented by Tanimura & Antle and took place at noon on the Rodeo Track. The event hosted 24 children with disabilities from Monterey County who participated in various rodeo events led by professional cowgirls, cowboys, and Rodeo volunteers. California Rodeo Salinas’ Friday Night, July 22 Performance was a Sell Out

SALINAS, CA, July 22, 2022 – Night 2 of the California Rodeo Salinas brought a sold-out crowd of 17,500 out to the Salinas Sports Complex, an increase of 11.7% over Friday night in 2019 (a total of 1,837 tickets). Man in Greenfield Arrested for DUI, Narcotics and Firearm Charges on July 24

  Just before 2:00 on Sunday morning, July 24 a Greenfield Police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop, the driver displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol.  Officers directed the driver to exit the vehicle so they could conduct field sobriety tests, but the driver, 37-year-old, Miguel Herrera Valdivia, refused to comply with officers’ instructions.  Officers gained access to the vehicle and detained Valdivia.  During a search of Valdivia’s waistband, a loaded .40 Smith & Wesson M&P Shield firearm was located. He was taken into custody. A further search located cocaine in his wallet.  Once at the police department, field sobriety tests were conducted, to include a breathalyzer examination. Valdivia was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, and had a blood alcohol content of .17%.   Valdivia was transported to the Monterey County Jail for DUI, narcotics, and firearm related charges. 

Man in Greenfield Sustains Major Injuries in Hit and Run Accident on July 22

 On Friday, July 22 at 4:45 P.M., Greenfield Police Officers were dispatched to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic accident on the 1100 block of Elm Avenue.  As officers responded, callers reported that the vehicle fled from the scene, and the victim was laying on the roadway.  As officers arrived on the scene, they located the victim, a 21-year-old male who was suffering from major head injuries.  The Greenfield Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived on the scene, stabilized the patient, and transported him to a local trauma center where he underwent emergency surgery.  Officers of the Soledad Police Department responded to Greenfield to assist with locating the suspected vehicle. With help from witnesses and city cameras, officers identified and located the suspected vehicle, which was parked nearby. The driver was not located. Man in Greenfield Busted for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Stolen Power Tools and Other Charges on July 21

  On Thursday afternoon, July 21 Greenfield Police Officers assisted the Monterey County Probation Department with a probation compliance check on the 1000 block of Walnut Avenue.  During the compliance check 41-year-old Michael Lopez of Greenfield, was in possession of over 8.5 grams of methamphetamine and a methamphetamine pipe. Officers also located large quantities of brand-new power tools and other household goods. The items were stolen from various Home Depot locations; collectively, the recovered items had a retail value of over $7,000.  Lopez was arrested and transported to the Monterey County Jail for possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, and probation violations.  Greenfield police detectives are working with the Home Depot to return the recovered items, but if you have information about stolen power tools, the Greenfield PD asks that you contact Detective Lerma at 831-601-8376. 

Man in Soledad Arrested on Weapons Charges and Recklessly Discharging a Firearm on July 21

  On Thursday night, July 21 at 11:30 PM, Soledad Police Officers received a call of a large fight at the Watering Trough Bar on West Street. As units responded it was upgraded to a shooting. Within a minute officers detained 3 males on the 200 block of Market Street. Minutes later, the Greenfield Police Department, the Gonzales Police Department, the King City Police Department, and the Monterey County Sheriff's Office arrived to assist.  Once the scene was controlled, Officers reviewed surveillance cameras and determined that Paul Olivas Jr. was involved in the fight and the shooting. Cameras show that a large fight broke out inside the bar and Olivas Jr. was pushed out of the bar along with others who were involved in the fight. He was then seen retrieving a gun from his waistband, walking back towards the bar where he points a gun towards the crowd and bar and then he shoots one round into the air.  Olivas Jr. was arrested, booked and later transported to the Monterey County Ja

Highway 146 Paving Project East of Soledad Continues with Closures During the Week of July 24

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Travelers on Highway 146 east of Soledad will experience traffic control and full closures of the roadway next week as a paving rehabilitation project continues to move forward. Highway 146 is the main road leading from Soledad to the western entrance of Pinnacles National Park.   On Monday July 25, Tuesday July 26, and Thursday July 28, travelers will encounter a full closure of Highway 146 from the intersection of Highway 146 and Ramus Rd., east to the entrance of Pinnacles National Park.   The hours of the full closure will be from 7 am to 4 pm.   Emergency vehicles and National Park staff will be permitted to pass through during these three days of full closures.   On Monday July 25, Tuesday July 26, Wednesday July 27, and Friday July 29, travelers will encounter one-way traffic control on Highway 146 from the eastern edge of Soledad at Rubion Drive and continuing east to Ramus Road.   The hours of the one-way traffic control will be from 7 am to 4 pm.   Travele

Armed Robbery in Paso Robles on July 21

  On Thursday, July 21 at 06:44 AM, an employee from Carl’s Jr. on Black Oak Drive reported that an armed robbery had just occurred. A medium-built Hispanic male adult, approximately 5’7”, wearing a grey sweater, black pants, a black mask, and a blue backpack, had just robbed the business of an undisclosed amount of cash and coins. The suspect displayed a small, black semi-automatic style handgun during the commission of this crime. He escorted the two employees to a walk-in freezer and instructed them to remain in the freezer for 10 minutes. The two employees followed the directions provided and immediately called 911 once they exited the freezer. Man Busted in Greenfield for Possession of Illegal Fireworks, Firearms, Marijuana and is Being Investigated for Child Pornography

  According to the Greenfield Police Department, 35-year-old Gustavo Morales Castro appeared in court on Wednesday, July 20 charged with illegal possession of firearms, marijuana for sale and possession of dangerous fireworks. Castro's residence located on the 300 block of 5th Street was served a warrant on June 23, 2022 for an ongoing child pornography case and during the search, Castro was not at his home. Officers came across 100 pounds of illegal fireworks, an unregistered ghost rifle, a loaded Springfield XD .45 handgun with a scratched serial number, over 250 rounds of pistol and rifle ammo, 6 pounds of individually packed marijuana, over 12 pounds of weed in plastic bags and marijuana vape cartridges. Castro was identified as the owner of the illegal items but was on the run from law enforcement for several weeks. An arrest warrant was issued for him, and he was eventually taken into custody. The child pornography case is still being investigated.

Probation and Parole Operation Done by Paso Robles PD and Other Law Enforcement on July 18

  Paso Robles, CA – On Monday, July 18 the Paso Robles Police Department, in conjunction with the San Luis Obispo County Probation Department, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force, Atascadero Police Department, and State Parole, performed a probation and parole compliance operation. Three individuals were arrested for probation violations, one was arrested for a parole violation, one was arrested for outstanding warrants, and one subject was arrested after a vehicle stop for multiple drug and weapon related charges.

Northbound Highway 101 was Shutdown by Cal Trans Outside of King City on July 20 for up an Hour Due to a Trailer getting Tangled on some Wires

Northbound Highway 101 was closed for at least an hour near King City Wednesday afternoon. According to Caltrans Officials, a trailer was caught on wires on the Salinas River Bridge and a hard closure was set up at First Street. Traffic ended up being detoured at First Street and directed north to Metz Road then west on Elm Avenue in Greenfield. The Broadway on-ramp was also closed. PG&E work crews were on the scene to clear the wires.

Prison Guard at CTF in Soledad Arrested by Monterey County Sheriff's Office on Child Molestation Charges

  On Tuesday, July 19 Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Detectives concluded an investigation which began in late May of 2022. Two courageous and brave young women came forward to speak about the alleged trauma and abuse they suffered at the hands of 37-year-old Jose Miguel Andrade Ibarra of Soledad who was a prison guard at the CTF in Soledad. Prior to living in Soledad Andrade Ibarra resided in Greenfield. Andrade Ibarra was a family friend of the two young women and it's alleged that he sexually assaulted them numerous times over a span of years. After an extensive investigation detectives arrested Andrade Ibarra on Tuesday morning, July 19 without incident. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail on numerous child molestation charges, including sex with a minor under the age 10 by an adult.   MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for South Monterey County from Sunday, July 17 through Saturday, July 23.  Highway 101: Elm Avenue – Walnut Avenue: July 18 – July 22 One lane closure will occur along northbound and southbound Highway 101 between Elm Avenue and Walnut Avenue for slope repair work from 6 am to 4 pm.   After nearly 4 decades working within the Agricultural Commissioner’s system, Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner Henry Gonzales is announcing his retirement. Gonzales began his career with Monterey County 38 years ago as a temporary insect trapper, and was later promoted to agricultural inspector/biologist, deputy agricultural commissioner, and chief deputy agricultural commissioner. In 2008, he left to become Agricultural Commissioner of Ventura County but returned to Monterey County in 2018 to serve as Commissioner. Gonzales has deep roots in agriculture. He was born into a family of migrant farmworkers and began working as a farmworker at the age of 14, thinning lettuce with the short-handled hoe called El Cortito (Spanish for the short one). Man in King City Arrested on Weapons Charges on July 15

  On Friday morning, July 15 Soledad Police Detectives, Greenfield Police Detectives, King City Police Detective Rodriguez, and the South Monterey County Task Force conducted surveillance and search warrant operations in King City. The location was not disclosed.  During the search warrant, officers located a loaded "Ghost Gun" and narcotics. Guadalupe Arellano was taken into custody without incident. He was later transported and booked into the Monterey County Jail on weapons violations charges.  

San Ardo Woman Sentenced to Jail for Failure to Take Care of Her Animals

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on July 15 that on July 13, 2022, 70-year-old Debra Kallmeyer of San Ardo pled guilty to Penal Code 597.1(a), a misdemeanor, failure to care for her animals. On September 23, 2021, the SPCA of Monterey County contacted Kallmeyer to see if they could assist with her cats after receiving a call from a concerned citizen. Kallmeyer denied needing any help and would not allow SPCA to check on the welfare of her animals. On September 28, 2021, the SPCA was called to Kallmeyer’s residence again by a caretaker there after Kallmeyer was hospitalized. The SPCA found approximately 31 cats, 2 dogs and three dead kittens on the property. The dead kittens had died from starvation and respiratory infections. The cats were found in unsanitary conditions with feces, urine, and mold throughout their living area. The live animals were taken by the SPCA and given medical treatment for wounds and upper respiratory diseas

King City PD Investigating Tax Preparation Service for Fraud

In February of 2022, the King City Police Department was contacted by multiple members of the community who believed that they had been defrauded by their tax preparation service. Due to the scope of the investigation involving possible violations of not only state law, but federal law violations, the King City Police Department contacted the Criminal Investigations Unit of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for assistance. On Thursday, July 14, 2022 special agents form the IRS with assistance from officers of the King City Police Department served a search warrant on “Rito’s Insurance” located at 322 Broadway St., Suite #A in King City, Ca 93930.   This investigation is ongoing, and they believe there may be other members of the community who may have been victims of fraud during the filing of their tax returns.  If you observe any area of your tax return that has been “whited out” or altered this should warrant further review by law enforcement. Man in King City Arrested for Burglary and Other Charges on July 13

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 3:48 am, officers from the King City Police Department were dispatched to Mee Memorial Hospital for a report of a subject walking on the roof. Officers arrived on the scene and spotted a subject running from the hospital.  A perimeter was established and during a search of the area the subject was located and apprehended hiding in a large dumpster on hospital property. The man was identified as 20-year-old Richard Silva of King City.  Silva was arrested on numerous charges and later booked into the Monterey County Jail.  As a result of additional investigation, officers were able to positively identify Silva as a suspect in burglaries that occurred at the La Michocana Ice Cream Shop which is on the 1300 block of Broadway St. and Grace Lutheran Church on the 200 block of Canal St.     Anyone with further information regarding this case is encouraged to contact Sergeant Brennan Lux of the King City Police Department at (831) 386-5963, blux@kingcity.com, or

Juveniles in Gonzales Busted on Weapons Charges and Probation Violations on July 13

  On Wednesday afternoon, July 13 the South Monterey County Task Force teamed up with the Gonzales Police Department to conduct several parole and probation compliance checks. As officers were approaching a probationer's residence on South Belden Street they observed a juvenile on probation in a vehicle trying to leave. Task Force Officers stopped the vehicle and immediately observed a firearm on the floorboard of the vehicle. The firearm was determined to be a loaded "Ghost Gun". Two juveniles were taken into custody and transported back to the Soledad Police Department for further investigation. Both were later transported and booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall on weapons charges and probation violations.
