5 People Detained in Greenfield After Police Officer is Assaulted With a Scooter

On Wednesday afternoon, July 27 Greenfield Police Officers received multiple reports of a group of males loitering and drinking alcohol in public at an apartment complex on the 200 block of 9th Street.

An officer arrived and contacted five males who appeared to be intoxicated.  One of the males, later identified as 19-year-old, Oswaldo Galindo, attempted to walk away, but was detained by the officer.

As the officer detained Galindo, a second male, later identified as a 16-year-old, ran up to the officer with a metal scooter and raised the scooter in a swinging motion.  Citizens observed this aggressive action and yelled to alert the officer.  The 16-year-old used the scooter to strike the officer on the side of the head and arms, but one of the citizens, who was within feet of the officer, observed that the officer was being attacked and pushed the 16-year-old away from the officer.  This heroic action prevented the officer from further attack.

As the officer engaged with the 16-year-old, Galindo ran away. The 16-year-old continued to strike and fight with the officer until the officer took him to the ground. Once on the ground, the 16-year-old continued to resist until a second officer arrived, and both officers were able to safely take the 16-year-old into custody.

Residents in Greenfield kept a watchful eye on where Galindo fled and directed officers to a yard he had entered.

With assistance from the Soledad and King City Police Departments, a perimeter was established, and officers located Galindo, but once again, Galindo ran.  After a brief foot pursuit, Galindo was taken into custody a block away.

The officer sustained a broken nose and bump to the head, which was the result of being hit with the scooter, while the 16-year-old had scrapes to his knees and elbows.

The 16-year-old, was charged with felony assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and conspiracy. He was transported to the Monterey County Juvenile Hall.

Galindo was arrested and charged with public intoxication, resisting arrest and conspiracy; he was transported to the Monterey County Jail.

19-year-old Ivan Martinez and 20-year-old Omar Martinez along with 18-year-old Jacinto Diaz were the other three males contacted by police. Both Ivan and Omar Martinez were arrested for delaying a peace officer, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and probation violations; both were transported to the Monterey County Jail, while Diaz was release at the scene after being arrested.

Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
