Law enforcement nabs Soledad kidnapping victim

An alleged kidnapping victim wanted for attempted murder was located and arrested in Fresno on Thursday, November 29. 26-year-old Jorge Jasso of Soledad, was reportedly kidnapped on Monday, October 22 which was also the same day he was due in court. The FBI and U.S Attorney's Office reports that Jasso has been booked into the Fresno County Jail and has been charged with 3 counts of attempted murder, 1 count of conspiracy to commit murder and 1 count of conspiracy to commit murder with a deadly weapon. On Thursday, November 29, members of the Fresno County Multi Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium were in the area of Ashland Avenue and Highway 41 when they spotted a white four door GMC pickup. Authorities believed Jasso was inside the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The GMC turned a corner and collided with another car. Police say after the crash, Jasso got out of the car and ran, but was caught, arrested and found to be in possession of a loaded and concealed firearm. Also arres

Greenfield Councilwoman Nely Martinez along with kids from Greenfield High School and other people in the community are looking for volunteers to help out with a Community Clean Up event on Saturday morning, December 1 beginning at 6:45 am at the Greenfield Public Library. Gloves, vests and trash bags will be provided.

King City Lighted Christmas parade is November 30

The 20th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade will be Friday night, November 30 at 6:30 pm in King City starting at Broadway and Mildred and ending at the Town Square Plaza. King City Chamber Director Janet Bessemer said that there will be at least 15 floats in the parades along with various vehicles going down Broadway to Town Square Plaza.

Nacimiento-Fergusson Bridge open

The “Green Bridge” at  Fort Hunter Liggett going to Nacimiento-Fergusson Road has re-opened with a new height restriction of 12 feet, while the speed limit remains 10 Miles per hour over the bridge. The low-water crossing is an alternate route to get to Highway 1, however, will be closed if 4 inches or more of water is flowing. King City man convicted for DUI incident

Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Thursday, November 29 that on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, after a 3-day jury trial, 25-year-old Ricardo Zamora of King City, was found guilty of one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or more. On February 25, 2018, Zamora was driving on State Route 101 near Gonzalez after an evening of drinking in Gilroy. At 3:30 am, CHP officers spotted Zamora speeding and erratically weaving in his lane. After the stop, Officer Cole Perez detected symptoms of alcohol intoxication and began a full DUI investigation. Zamora performed unsuccessfully on his field sobriety tests and submitted to a breath test, with results of .10 % BAC. The jurors heard evidence that Zamora lied to officers multiple times throughout their investigation. The case was heard by Monterey County Superior Court Judge Efren N. Iglesia who sentenced Zamora to five years of probation

2 King City men booked for lewd acts with a child

On Thursday, November 29 at 3:25 pm Officers from the King City Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of Meyer Street for a child abuse investigation. Upon the Officers arrival, the preliminary investigation revealed the victim, a 12 year old female, had been abused and Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit were called to investigate the incident. Investigators of the Major Crimes Unit discovered that the victim had been abused by 2 different suspects at 2 different times. The suspects were identified by the victim and contacted at a residence on the 400 block of Lambourne Court in King City and taken into custody without incident and booked into the Monterey County Jail. 30-year-old Raul Cortez Gonzalez of King City was booked on 2 counts of Lewd Acts with a child under 14 and 1 count of annoying and molesting a minor. Gonzales man sentenced for fatal DUI accident

Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Wednesday, November 28 that 38-year-old Charles Bailey II of Gonzales, was sentenced for a DUI collision that killed 56-year-old Guadalupe Solis in April of 2018. Bailey was sentenced to 13 years in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for his previous plea to 1 count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Bailey also admitted he suffered a prior strike from 2010 for a conviction of lewd acts involving a child and that he served a prior prison term. Bailey will have to serve 80% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. On April 17, 2018 at approximately 10:00 p.m., Solis was driving with his niece Elia Solis, on Gloria Road when Bailey, who was driving at a high rate of speed, hit their vehicle from behind. Greenfield City Council meeting recap

Greenfield Police Chief Denise Chavez Oglesby swore in Officer Paulo Diaz of the Greenfield Police Department at the Greenfield City Council meeting on Tuesday night, November 27. Officer Diaz comes to Greenfield from the Watsonville Police Department and will spend the next 4 months in the Field Training Program before being released on his own. The Greenfield City Council also adopted a resolution between the Council and the City of Greenfield by having the City finalize contract negotiations with Convergint Technologies for the purchase and installation of a City-Wide Surveillance system. The cost of getting this system purchased and installed will be over $1.1 million which will be financed over 5 years.

2018 Monterey County election results certified

On Tuesday night, November 27, Monterey County Registrar of Voters, Claudio Valenzuela certified the results for the November 6, 2018 Statewide Midterm General Election. The official results at www.MontereyCountyElections.us show a voter turnout of 62.8%. Valenzuela said that this election showed voter participation at 62.8% compared to the last two similar statewide elections of 2014 and 2010 which had voter turnouts of 45.32% and 63.32% respectively and indicated that this election saw the highest voter registration level in the history of Monterey County, with 187,286 registered voters. Valenzuela stated that they really appreciate the efforts of the 800 poll workers, temporary employees and the owners of the facilities that served as polling places for providing an invaluable service to their community. King City City Council meeting recap

The King City City Council was in regular session on Tuesday night, November 27 at City Hall. Councilwoman Darlene Acosta expressed her concerns regarding how some residents are maintaining the lawns on their properties with Christmas coming up in less than a month. City Attorney Shannon Chaffin spoke about some laws that are in place regarding what Acosta brought forth. Chaffin said that the state of California passed some laws because there are people that are letting their lawns grow dead, while Home Owners Associations and other groups are penalizing people because of how they let their lawns go dead and the state passed certain laws restricting Home Owners Associations and cities from doing that. Chaffin also mentioned that there are some nuisance laws that are in effect in some cities too, but indicated that there may be some limitations he has to look at further. Gonzales PWD is doing water maintenance on tank

The City of Gonzales Public Works Department is performing scheduled maintenance on one of the large water storage tanks at the corner of Johnson Canyon and Iverson roads. The tank has mostly been drained through use and by moving water to other users. The remaining water in the lower portion of the tank will be slowly drained down Johnson Canyon through the end of the week of November 25. The Gonzales Public Works Department advises people to please not worry if you see any water running from a tank. It is intentional and part of the plan.

Fatal 1 vehicle accident in Atascadero

A fatal accident in Atascadero on Sunday morning, November 25 has resulted in the death of 50-year-old Eric Polmanteer of Atascadero. The CHP reports that Polmanteer was driving north on El Camino Real south of Asuncion Road just after 12 am when he lost control of his vehicle which caused it to crash off the shoulder of the road and hit a fence. Polmanteer was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation, but the CHP states that drugs or alcohol are not suspected.

Ribbon cutting ceremony in Soledad

The extension of Orchard Lane between Gabilan Drive and Metz Road in Soledad is almost complete. Since there is still work remaining, the road is still CLOSED. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the road is scheduled for November 28, 2018 at 12 pm on the intersection of Orchard Lane and Metz Road in Soledad. For the safety of the community, contractors, and construction workers, the Soledad Police Department will continue to regularly monitor the road closure.

Monterey County Midterm election results update

The Monterey County Elections Office is still working away at finishing up the vote count from the November 6 Midterm general election. As of Wednesday, November 21, 62.8% of the votes have been calculated. In the race for Mayor of Greenfield Lance Walker still has over 44% of the vote, Avelina Torres over 39.6% and Raul Rodriguez still has over 16% of the vote, while in the race for a couple of Greenfield City Council seats, it's still very tight as Angela Untalon has over 22.5%, Drew Tipton over 22.2%, Irene Garcia over 21.6%, Jessica Madrid-Bautista over 19.5% and David Mendoza over 13.9%. In the race for a few Gonzales City Council seats Paul Miller has over 31.8% of the vote, Elizabeth Silva over 30.2%, Lorraine Worthy over 27.5% and Henry Martinez Sr. over 10.3%. Car fire outside of Greenfield

(Photo courtesy of Christopher Lopez) A car fire broke out off of Arroyo Seco Road about 4 miles north of Greenfield on Saturday night, November 24 at around 9:22 pm. The Greenfield Fire Department along with the CHP and CAL FIRE were all on site. It took about 5 minutes to fully contain the blaze which destroyed the vehicle, but the fire did not spread into vegetation. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire was mechanical in nature.

King City PD will swear in new Sergeant on November 27

King City Police Chief Robert Masterton and the Staff of the King City Police Department is inviting the public to join them for a Swearing In and Welcome Ceremony for Sergeant John Dow on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 10:00 am at the King City Police Department’s training room. Sergeant Dow comes to the King City Police Department with 21 years of law enforcement experience and has worked in custodial facilities, as a Bailiff, Patrol and Investigations. Sergeant Dow also holds Certificates from the California Peace Officers Standards and Training, the Basic Post, Intermediate Post, Advanced Post and Supervisory Post Certificates. Police Chief Masterson will also be introducing to the community Stephen Phillips and David Rivera, the King City Police Department’s 2 newest soon to be officers. SVF Heritage Foundation Fundraiser is November 29

The Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation will be holding a Polenta and Stew Feed Fundraiser on Thursday, November 29 beginning at 4 pm in the Orradre Building at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. The fundraiser will be put on to benefit the SVF Heritage Foundation which will use the money to do capital improvements at the Fairgrounds such as work on the barns and the Orradre Building. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased at the door or at various businesses in King City such as First Capital Bank, True Value and L.A. Hearne Company.

3 people killed on Hwy 101 accident in King City

On Wednesday morning, November 21 at 6:10 am, a fatal traffic collision occurred on US-101 Southbound, south of Central Avenue in King City. The collision occurred as a driver operating a Chevy Astro Van Farm Labor Vehicle failed to yield to the right of way to oncoming traffic as it proceeded westbound into the direct path of a Dodge Journey, from US-101 northbound. The driver of the Dodge Journey was travelling southbound on US-101 as the driver of the Chevy attempted to cross the southbound lanes directly ahead. The front of the Dodge Journey collided with the right passenger side of the Chevy. At the time of this preliminary report, a total of the three individuals sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision. California Highway Patrol Officers, multiple AMR personel and Cal-Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. Fatal 1 vehicle accident in Templeton

A fatal 1 vehicle crash that occurred in Templeton on Tuesday night, November 20 at 6:05 pm has resulted in the death of 1 person injured many others. 28-year-old Hugo Sanchez Carillo of Gonzales was driving a Toyota Sequoia SUV westbound on SR 46 East just west of Lucy Brown Road at 65 mph. Carillo made an unsafe turning movement veering from an otherwise straight path of travel. The vehicle crossed over the median and rolled over multiple times landing on its wheels and was blocking the eastbound lanes of traffic. An unidentified female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. The CHP responded to the scene along with Cal Fire and San Luis Ambulance. Carillo received major injuries and was transported by CHP helicopter to a trauma center at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. King City at Risk Juvenile Missing

On Tuesday night, November 20 at 9:08 pm King City Police Officers responded to the 500 block of Bassett Street regarding a report of a runaway 15 year old Hispanic female juvenile, who was later identified as Matilde Gonzalez Garcia. Garcia is a foster child, who was due to be placed with another foster family. Garcia was last seen at the residence on Tuesday night, November 20 at 5:15 pm and was last seen wearing a mustard yellow covered sweatshirt and blue jeans. Garcia was also in possession of 2 black back packs. Garcia is 5-feet-tall, 125 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.  Garcia’s hair is extremely long going past her waistline. The King City Police Department is requesting the assistance of the public with this ongoing and active investigation. Pinnacles Entrance fee changes

PAICINES – Previously announced entrance fee changes at Pinnacles National Park are scheduled to take effect on January 1 of 2019. These new fees will be $30.00 per vehicle or $25.00 per motorcycle, while an annual park pass will cost $55. All of the money received from entrance fees remains with the National Park Service with at least 80% of the revenue going to Pinnacles National Park. Monterey County men busted for trying to rob a bank

Modesto CA – Six Monterey County men are in Stanislaus County Jail after being arrested as they prepared to rob a Modesto bank on Friday afternoon, November 16. The suspects were armed and in the process of disguising themselves while sitting in a stolen car in the bank parking lot when detectives from Stanislaus County, the Modesto Police Department and Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force (StanCATT) took them into custody. 25-year-old Jesus Robledo of Salinas along with 27-year-old Enrique Lopez, 23-year-old Victor Bravo, 26-year-old Moises Garcia, 23-year-old Robert Zavala, and 19-year-old Cesar Lemus all of Soledad were arrested on attempted burglary and conspiracy charges. Several of the arrested suspects have lengthy criminal histories including robbery, kidnapping, weapons and drug charges as well as evading and resisting police and being members of criminal street gangs. Stabbing incident in Paso Robles

On Thursday, November 15 at 2 pm, a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Deputy was patrolling the 2800 block of Spring Street, when he was flagged down by a citizen who reported that a fight had just occurred. The deputy notified the Paso Robles Police Department and officers responded. Once on scene, officers learned that 2 male subjects had been involved in a fight and one of the subjects stabbed the other. It was learned that the suspect, a 56 year old male, had confronted the victim and stabbed him, a 25 year old male victim, during the altercation. The injury to the victim was non-life threatening and he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The suspect, who also sustained minor injuries as a result of the altercation, was also transported to a hospital by ambulance. There are no outstanding suspects in this case and the incident was isolated to the involved subjects. Paso Robles Police Detectives are following up on the investigation.

As you may know by now, the Midterm General election has been wrapped up now for over a week, but the Monterey County Elections Office is still gathering all of votes that have come in. As of Wednesday, November 14 over 56% of the votes have been calculated. In the race for Superintendent of Public Instruction Marshall Tuck has earned over 50.3% of the vote and Tony Thurmond over 49.6%. A number of local races for open School Board positions in South Monterey County are still very tight. In the race for a Gonzales Unified School Board position Maria Cuevas has over 25.4% of the vote, Jose Lopez is at over 25.3%, Araceli Flores is at over 24%, Rosalie Sanchez is at over 15.9% and Monique Marie Martinez has picked up over 9.1% of the vote. In the race for a Soledad Unified School District 4-year term Alfredo Flores has earned over 36.3% of the vote, Monica Pantoja has grabbed over 31.4%, Jodi Massa over 16.2% and Jaime Fernandez has 15.9%, while in a head to head race for a 2-year-ter

Greenfield City Council meeting recap

At the Greenfield City Council meeting on Tuesday night, November 13 the Council was honored with a Platinum Beacon Spotlight Award by the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments Watch for reducing their energy use at City Facilities by 20% from 2010 to 2018. The Council also approved to have direct staff move forward with contract discussions with Zero City LLC to conduct a feasibility study regarding alternative energy options.

As you may know by now it's been over a week since the Midterm General election finished up and right now the Monterey County Elections Office is still slowly calculating all of the votes that came in by mail. As of Wednesday, November 14 over 56% of the votes have been counted. In the race for a District 12 State Senate seat it seems like Anna Caballero will win as she has now earned over 65% of the vote and Rob Poythress over 34%, while in the race for a District 30 Assemblyman position it appears that Robert Rivas will be the winner as he has now picked up over 70% of the vote and Neil Kitchens over 29%. Vehicle Rollover with Hazardous Materials Spill near Bradley

Bradley, CA – At around 9:31 am on Tuesday morning, November 13, CAL FIRE responded to a rollover vehicle accident on Indian Valley Road about 5 miles south of the Hare Canyon Road intersection, near Bradley. On arrival, firefighters found a pickup truck on it's roof with it's load of approximately 25 gallons of hazardous pool cleaning chemicals scattered on the roadway. The driver was not injured. Additional resources were requested, and a section of Indian Valley Road was closed. After evaluation of the situation and chemicals involved, clean-up of the chemicals was turned over to a representative of the company transporting them. A CAL FIRE engine remained at the scene until the chemicals were cleaned up and the pickup truck was transported from the accident site. TAMC announces “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” Winners

MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) announced on Friday, November 9 that the top three winners of the “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” are Nikki Nguyen who took 1st place, Danielle Brown who grabbed 2nd, while Ellis Smith & Tara Grouwinkel tied for 3rd. The “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” was created by the Transportation Agency to address the fact that drive-alone commutes are the greatest contributor to traffic in Monterey County, which leads to parking and air pollution issues. During the month of October, the Agency challenged participants to be a part of the solution by exploring other ways of commuting through the challenge. Commuters could choose to bike, walk, ride the bus, carpool or tele-commute at least once during the month for a chance to win prizes. The winners of the challenge are the participants who logged the most trips using a smart commute option. Each of them will receive a gift card from the business of their choice.

Spot fires knocked down in Monterey County

4 different spot fires broke out in Monterey County on Wednesday, November 7. CAL FIRE & the Soledad Fire Department knocked down a small vegetation fire off of Highway 101 near the Front Street exit in Soledad sometime late Wednesday afternoon. CAL FIRE & the Pine Canyon Fire Department also contained a small brush fire off of New Pleyto Road in Lockwood sometime after 9 pm on Wednesday night. CAL FIRE & the Pine Canyon Fire Department were also paged to the scene to extinguish 2 roadside spot fires off of Hwy 101 near the Jolon Road exit in Bradley sometime before 12 am on Wednesday evening. No one was hurt in any of these fires and no structures were threatened. 

Monterey County man wins $2 million in scratch off ticket

A Monterey County farm worker recently won $2 million after scratching off a California lottery Grand Crossword Scratchers game ticket. 64-year-old Miguel Calderon bought his lucky Scratchers at Greenfield Market, which is located at 348 El Camino Real in Greenfield. The retailer will pick up a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

More unofficial results from the 2018 Midterm General election on Tuesday, November 6 show that a number of local races for open School Board positions in South Monterey County are too close to call. In the race for a Gonzales Unified School Board position Maria Cuevas and Jose Lopez are neck and neck earning over 24% of the votes, Araceli Flores is at over 23%, Rosalie Sanchez is at over 16% and Monique Marie Martinez has picked up over 10.5%. In the race for a Soledad Unified School District 4-year term, Alfredo Flores has earned over 35.5% of the vote, Monica Pantoja has grabbed over 30%, Jodi Massa over 17% and Jaime Fernandez has over 16%, while in a head to head race for a 2-year-term on the Soledad Unified School District, Jess Berreras has over 51% of the vote and Lucio Rios has over 48%. Arson incident in Greenfield

The Greenfield Fire and Police Departments responded to a vehicle fire on the 200 block of 10th Street on Wednesday morning, November 7 at around 9:32 am and it was fully extinguished within 5 minutes. As Greenfield Firefighters were attending to that fire though, a second fire flared up in a rubbish container in an alley up on the 200 block of El Camino Real which was quickly put out. With the help of the community, two juveniles were identified as the suspects, taken into custody and were arrested on suspicion of arson. The case remains under investigation. In the race for Governor Democrat Gavin Newsom has been declared the winner over Republican John Cox. In the race for Secretary of State Alex Padilla has been declared the winner over Mark Meuser. Tuesday, November 6 is the statewide Midterm General election. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at all local polling places and at the Monterey County Elections office. If you're voting by U.S. mail, all ballots must be postmarked by Tuesday, November 6 and received in the Monterey County Election office no later than the Friday after the Election. SVF Announces Updates to Master Plan

KING CITY — The Salinas Valley Fair, Inc. has released an updated facility map as part of the ongoing process of updating its master plan, an initiative that the fairgrounds originally started in 2002. The master plan details the locations, sizes and types of facilities and land uses needed to support the mission of the Salinas Valley Fair. The information included in the concept map is based on input received from Salinas Valley Fair Directors, staff, business partners, regional officials and members of the community. The most recent update was unveiled in January of 2017 at the Salinas Valley Fair Board of Directors Annual Meeting, in July of 2017 at the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Annual Meeting as well as at King City community organizations. King City man pleads no contest for dumping waste concrete bricks

Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Monday, November 5 that 39-year-old Luis Fernando Rosas Ochoa of King City, entered a plea of no contest to trespassing with the intent to injure property for dumping waste concrete bricks into San Lorenzo Creek. Monterey County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wills placed Ochoa on 3 years of informal probation with terms and conditions to serve 20 days in the Monterey County jail, pay a $2,000 fine, and stay away from San Lorenzo Creek near 1st Street in King City. On March 28, 2018, officers from the King City Police Department, while on patrol, observed a white pickup truck parked within San Lorenzo Creek near 1st Street in King City. The creek was dry at the time. The truck was stuck in the mud and a black trailer was parked nearby. Near the truck and trailer was a large amount of broken concrete bricks and pieces. Brush fire knocked down in San Ardo

A vegetation fire flared up near some Oilfields at the intersection of Alvarado Road and Highway 101 Northbound in San Ardo just before 6 pm on Thursday night, November 1. According to Monterey and San Benito Counties PIO Johnathan Pangburn of CAL FIRE, they had 7 engines and 1 handcrew on the scene to contain the blaze at 7:06 pm. The fire burned a little over 5 acres. No one was hurt and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Gonzales man pleads guilty to fatal DUI accident

Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo announced on Friday, November 2 that 38-year-old Charles Bailey II of Gonzales, pleaded guilty to a collision that killed Guadalupe Solis. Bailey pled guilty to 1 count of Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated. Bailey also admitted he suffered a prior strike from 2010 for a conviction of 288(A), of lewd acts involving a child and that he served a prior prison term. Bailey will have to serve 80% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. On April 17, 2018 at around 10 pm, Guadalupe Solis, was driving with his niece Elia Solis, on Gloria Road when Bailey was driving at a high rate of speed and hit their vehicle from behind. CHP officers conducted a DUI investigation and Bailey was found to be under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol level of 0.10. 2 vehicle collision in Greenfield

A 2 vehicle accident that took place sometime after 4:30 pm on Thursday afternoon, November 1 of off Arroyo Seco Road and near Clark in Greenfield. According to the CHP, the cause of the collision was a right of way issue involving a white VW Jetta and a green GMC Truck as one of the vehicles was attempting to pass another vehicle heading southbound. Both vehicles received moderate to major damage from the accident. In addition, the airbags in both vehicles deployed during the accident. Two people received moderate injuries from the crash and were transported by ambulance to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas.
