Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Thursday, November 29 that on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, after a 3-day jury trial, 25-year-old Ricardo Zamora of King City, was found guilty of one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or more. On February 25, 2018, Zamora was driving on State Route 101 near Gonzalez after an evening of drinking in Gilroy. At 3:30 am, CHP officers spotted Zamora speeding and erratically weaving in his lane. After the stop, Officer Cole Perez detected symptoms of alcohol intoxication and began a full DUI investigation. Zamora performed unsuccessfully on his field sobriety tests and submitted to a breath test, with results of .10 % BAC. The jurors heard evidence that Zamora lied to officers multiple times throughout their investigation.
The case was heard by Monterey County Superior Court Judge Efren N. Iglesia who sentenced Zamora to five years of probation and ten days in jail. California Highway Patrol Officers Cole Perez, Michael DePedrini, and Ruben Gonzales investigated this case.
