TAMC announces “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” Winners

MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) announced on Friday, November 9 that the top three winners of the “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” are Nikki Nguyen who took 1st place, Danielle Brown who grabbed 2nd, while Ellis Smith & Tara Grouwinkel tied for 3rd.

The “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” was created by the Transportation Agency to address the fact that drive-alone commutes are the greatest contributor to traffic in Monterey County, which leads to parking and air pollution issues. During the month of October, the Agency challenged participants to be a part of the solution by exploring other ways of commuting through the challenge. Commuters could choose to bike, walk, ride the bus, carpool or tele-commute at least once during the month for a chance to win prizes.

The winners of the challenge are the participants who logged the most trips using a smart commute option. Each of them will receive a gift card from the business of their choice. Additionally, Jeff Millette won a $300 gift card for being selected through a random drawing of all participants.

By simply eliminating a few drive-alone trips, participants in the “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” saved 8,724 lbs. of CO2, (the equivalent of burning more than 436 gallons of gas), saved a total of $5,842 and burned 121,003 calories during their commutes to and from work or college in October.

As they did in the Go831 Bike Walk Challenge earlier this year, Monterey Bay Aquarium employees dominated the smart commute challenge with the highest percentage of active participants. As a result, employees will receive a surprise reward at their work place.

The “Go831 Smart Commute Challenge” is an activity of the new Go831 program provided through the Transportation Agency for Monterey County. Go831 is a free benefit powered by advanced technology that helps commuters find money-saving, stress-reducing alternatives to driving alone, and helps employers set up employee commute programs.
Measures Q and R have still both received very good support from voters for the South Monterey County Joint Union High School District as they've both picked up over 57% in yes votes and over 42% in no votes. Plus, the race to become the Soledad Community Health Care District Director is still a little tight as Jack Franscioni has earned over 41% of the vote, Anne Trebino over 34% and Robert Bigiogni has over 24% of the vote.

King City Man Arrested on January 6 for Rape, Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a Minor and Kidnapping

According to King City Police Department, on December 30, 2024 a 17-year-old minor female victim reported that she had attended a party on the 100 Block of Bedford Circle on December 24, 2024. During the party, the suspect provided her with alcohol. He then pulled the victim into a bedroom, forcibly removed her clothing and had sexual intercourse with her against her will. This case was investigated by the King City Police Department Investigations Unit which resulted in the apprehension and arrest on January 6, 2025 of the suspect identified as 21-year-old Jesus Oseguera Briseno of King City. King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield. The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding. The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case. Homicide of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad Under Investigation

APRIL 8, 2025 SOLEDAD, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an alleged homicide of incarcerated person 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza which occurred on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad. At approximately 5:39 p.m., staff observed incarcerated persons 30-year-old Edgar Frayre and 32-year-old Nicolas Young attacking Joseph Mendoza with improvised weapons on the dayroom floor in Facility C. Staff immediately responded and issued several verbal commands to stop, which were ignored. Staff then deployed multiple less-than-lethal use-of-force options, which ultimately quelled the incident. Frayre and Young were secured in handcuffs. Medical aid was initiated for Mendoza; however, he was pronounced deceased at 6:10 p.m. Medical evaluations were conducted on Frayre and Young, and no serious injuries were reported.
