SPCA Seeks Help Saving Opossum Babies

Every Spring, female opossums hold babies in their pouches growing strong and healthy. Sadly, some of these mother opossums are hit by cars or attacked by dogs as they forage for food, and their babies cannot survive without emergency rescue.  The SCPA is currently caring for 20 rescued opossum babies. Many were found orphaned in people’s backyards. Some were rescued after their mother was attacked by dogs or cats. One was found with a rodent trap stuck to its hand and will likely require one finger to be amputated.  Tragically, many more slowly starve or freeze to death in their mother’s pouch after she was hit by a car. You can help. If you hit an opossum with your car, or see one lying on the side of the road, and if it is safe to stop, please check on the opossum:     If the opossum is alive but injured, please call us at 831-264-5427 or visit spcamc.org/wildlife.     If the opossum is recently deceased, and if you are in a location where you are safe from other vehicles, please

SPCA Advises Leaving Fawns Alone by Keeping Dogs Away from Deer

It's Spring, which means lots of new babies on the Central Coast, including fawns. Every year, our SPCA Wildlife Center receives tiny fawns mistakenly kidnapped from their attentive mothers. This is because fawns spend the majority of their time curled up in a ball alone, and may appear to be abandoned when this is a normal part of their growing process. Sadly, our community has already experienced tragic fawn fatalities due to people and dogs. One doe went into premature labor after being chased by a dog, who then attacked the tiny newborn. The fawn did not survive. Another pregnant doe lost twins after being harassed. Both of these tragic situations took place in Pacific Grove. Mother deer leave their babies hidden and alone in a safe space during most of the day, often only visiting them during dawn and dusk. These fawns are not abandoned; the mother is likely out of sight watching you. If you find a fawn lying quietly in a curled up ball, leave it where it is, stay back and o

SPCA Wildlife Center Caring for 4 Rescued Baby Squirrels

The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is currently caring for 4 rescued baby squirrels, including Eastern Fox and Eastern Gray squirrels. One Eastern Fox squirrel was found being attacked by crows in Carmel. He sustained moderate injuries that our skilled rescue team treated with fluids, medications, and gentle wound care.  Two Eastern Gray Squirrel siblings were found at the base of a tree in Pacific Grove with no mother nearby. They were likely attacked or scared out of their nest.  The fourth baby squirrel was found in the grass near a home in Salinas. The baby is emaciated and debilitated, showing signs of being fed an improper diet, likely by a well-meaning citizen who didn’t realize how much harm is caused by the wrong food or cow’s milk. Our rehabilitation team is working hard to save her.  The SPCA will care for these baby squirrels for over a month as they recover, grow, and learn to survive in the wild. Once they are ready, we will release them
