19-year-old man in Greenfield Taken Into Custody for Allegedly Raping a 12-year-old

  According to the Soledad Police Department, Officers were called in on November 21 to a report of annoying messages between a 12-year-old child and 19-year-old Nathaniel Diaz. After looking over the information, the case was then sent over to the Soledad PD's Investigations Division to look over further. Soledad Police Detectives and a Forensic Interviewer from The Bates Eldridge Clinic at Natividad Medical Center spoke with the 12-year-old child and they determined that numerous sex crimes had taken place between the child and the suspect on several occasions in Soledad and in Greenfield. On Tuesday, November 29 Monterey County Superior Court issued a search warrant which was executed by the Soledad Police Department with the assistance of the Greenfield Police Department and the King City Police Department on the evening of November 29 on the 600 block of Madera Avenue in Greenfield. San Luis Obispo County DDA Chris Peuvrelle Appointed as Assistant District Attorney by Monterey County DA Jeannine Pacioni

  SALINAS, California - Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni announced on November 28 the appointment of Christopher Peuvrelle as assistant district attorney. Mr. Peuvrelle just successfully concluded the high-profile prosecution of Paul Flores for the murder of Cal Poly freshman Kristin Smart in 1996. That case was tried in Monterey County because the court granted a change of venue motion. District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni said, “I am looking forward to having Chris Peuvrelle join my management team. He is respected for his legal abilities and leadership skills. TAMC to Host Townhall on December 1 to Launch Participatory Budgeting Election for Greenfield Community Members to Vote on Safe Routes to School Projects”

2 Vehicle Collision on Highway 101 Outside of King City on November 29

  A 2 vehicle crash happened on Highway 101 Southbound near the Lagomarsino Road exit about 4 to 5 miles north of King City at 1:48 pm on Tuesday, November 29. The King City CHP reports that a Mercedes Sedan rammed into a truck that was towing a trailer at a high rate of speed. The driver in the Mercedes was arrested for Felony DUI. 2 people in the Mercedes were injured, while 4 people in the truck also picked up injuries and were transported to a Hospital to be treated.  

Man in Soledad Busted on Gang, Weapons and Drug Charges

  With the recent violence in South Monterey County, the Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Unit began investigating 35-year-old Francisco Galvan of Soledad. Detectives identified a house where Galvan was residing on the 200 block of 7th Street in the city of Soledad.   On Wednesday, November 16 detectives served a search warrant at the residence.  During the investigation, detectives located numerous firearms, a large amount methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, counterfeit M30 pills believed to contain fentanyl and money. Galvan was arrested and booked into the Monterey County jail on gang, weapon and drug violations.

  The Greenfield Police Department reports that 20-year-old Guillermo Becerra was arrested at 9:08 pm on Monday night, November 28 off of Southbound Highway 101 for a Vehicle Pursuit and Possession of a Loaded Firearm following an Armed Carjacking incident that happened in the City of Salinas. 

Man in Greenfield Arrested for Assault on a Police and Other Charges on November 27

  On Sunday night, November 27 at about 8:30 P.M., patrol officers contacted Uriel Medina near the intersection of 7th Street and Oak Avenue in Greenfield. Medina was a known gang associate with a criminal history that included robbery. As the officers attempted to detain Medina and conduct a pat-down search, Medina fled on his bicycle.  The first officer tased Medina, while the second officer ran after and tackled Medina. Medina fought and resisted the officers, and he was ultimately taken into custody.  During the search of Medina, officers found a loaded .40 caliber Glock 27 “ghost gun” in his waistband.  Medina was evaluated and cleared by medical staff, and he was transported to the Monterey County Jail for firearm related charges, resisting arrest, and assault on a police officer.

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures on Highway 101 for South Monterey County from Sunday, November 27 through Saturday, December 3.  Highway 101:  Soledad Overhead: November 29 – December 2 There will alternating lane closure and full closure of the off ramp along northbound Highway 101 at the Soledad Overhead for striping operation work from 6 am to 9 pm. Highway 101: Jolon Road (Bradley) – Alvarado/San Bernardo: November 29 There will be one lane closures along northbound Highway 101 between Jolon Road in Bradley at postmile 12.9 and Alvarado/San Bernardo at postmile 13.2 for tree work along the highway from 9 am to 3 pm. Highway 101: Wild Horse Road : November 28 - November 30 There will be full closure of the on and off ramps of northbound and southbound Highway 101 at Wild Horse Road for paving work from 8 am to 6 pm. CHP Maximum Enforcement Period in Effect from November 23 to November 27

  The CHP in King City and throughout the state of California will be kicking off a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, and continuing through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 27.  During the MEP, all available CHP officers will be on patrol, looking for unsafe driving practices, including seat belt violations, speeding, distracted driving, and signs of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.   Proper seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives in the event of a crash.  Everyone in the vehicle should be safely secured before even starting the car, including children being in the correct child safety seats.    Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel times of the year.  For that reason, extra care is warranted. Greenfield Police Receives Grant for Education and Enforcement of Illegal Sales of Tobacco to Minors

  The Greenfield Police Department recently announced that it has been awarded $56,155 from the Department of Justice Tobacco Grant Program, which will be used for enforcement and education of illegal sales of tobacco to minors.  As part of the grant, students at Greenfield High School will work closely with the Greenfield PD on creating educational public safety videos and flyers on the dangers and risks for youth who use tobacco.  The safety and health of youth is a top priority, and it is the Greenfield Police Department's goal to educate, enforce, and prevent the illegal sales of tobacco to youth in the community they serve. 

King City Police Department Advises Drivers To Plan Ahead This Holiday Season: Be Safe and Drive Sober

  King City, Calif. – Millions of people will be traveling to visit friends and family over the holidays. King City Police Chief Keith Boyd to Become Monterey County Undersheriff in 2023

  Monterey County Sheriff-Elect Tina Nieto on Monday, November 21 announced her management team which includes Del Rey Oaks Police Chief Jeff Hoyne and current King City Police Chief Keith Boyd. Hoyne is going to be a Chief Deputy of the County Sheriff's Office, while Boyd will become Sheriff-Elect Nieto’s undersheriff. Police Chief Boyd has been with the King City PD for 3 1/2 years. Police Chief Boyd begins his new duties as Monterey County undersheriff in early January of 2023.  

King City Police Department Encourages Everyone to Travel Safely and Make it to the Table for the Thanksgiving Holiday

Upcoming Closure of Broadway Street Offramp on Southbound US 101 in King City

  MONTEREY COUNTY – A construction project to rehabilitate the US 101 mainline and ramps and to perform a seismic retrofit and widening on the Salinas River Bridge near King City continues, with an upcoming closure of the southbound US 101 offramp at Broadway St.   Starting Monday Nov. 28, travelers will encounter a closure of the southbound US 101 offramp at Broadway St. This closure is expected to be in place through Dec. 30.   A detour will be available.   Travelers on southbound US 101 will be directed to continue past Broadway and take the Canal St. exit. Travelers will then make a left on Canal St. to reach Broadway.   Message and directional signs will be in place to direct travelers.   Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.   Additionally, the US 101 northbound on and offramps at Jolon Rd. were reopened to travelers on Thursday Nov. 17.   The contractor for this $78 million construction project is OHL, USA of Irvine, CA.  This project is expected to be completed at th

Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (S.A.F.E.) Team Tracks Down Sex Offender Living Near a School in Soledad

  Recently, the Investigations Division became aware of a sex offender who was registering as a transient with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office but appeared to be living in the city of Soledad. The Sheriff’s Office S.A.F.E. team started an investigation at that time into 56-year-old Brent Van Foresee of Soledad. The investigation revealed Foresee was not living as a transient, but was living on the 900 block of Las Flores Street in the city of Soledad.  During the week of November 13 S.A.F.E. team members along with additional members of the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division arrested Foresee, and served a search warrant at his residence. Initially, Foresee attempted to flee from detectives. However, he was quickly caught and arrested without incident. The search of Foresee’s residence revealed a large amount of evidence proving Foresee lived at the residence. Monterey County Public Health Department and Area Hospitals Urge Monterey County Residents to Take Preventative Measures Against Winter Respiratory Viruses

  Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Mee Memorial Healthcare System, Natividad Medical Center, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, and the Monterey County Health Department urge all residents to act now to protect themselves and their families against respiratory viruses circulating this holiday season, including influenza (“flu”), COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). An early wave of RSV and influenza activity in California has led to increased hospitalizations among children in many places across the state, placing stress on the healthcare system.  Monterey County hospitals are not Pediatric Intensive Care Unit hospitals and are working with regional hospitals to transfer critical care pediatric patients. These critical care hospitals are also near capacity.  In at least two Monterey County hospitals, the number of pediatric patients with respiratory symptoms visiting the Emergency Departments has more than doubled. 4 Men Arrested in Salinas for Carjacking Incident in Greenfield on November 16

  The Greenfield Police Department reports that on Wednesday night, November 16 just after 8:00 P.M., a victim called 911 to report he had been carjacked. The victim was seated in his car at a Fastrip Gas Station when he was approached by 2 males with a firearm. The suspects stole the vehicle and drove away. Officers alerted all Monterey County agencies with the stolen vehicle information, and at about 10:30 P.M., a Salinas police officer spotted the vehicle in Salinas. After a brief vehicle pursuit and then foot pursuit, all 4 suspects were apprehended. The driver was identified as 20-year-old Oswaldo Galindo of Greenfield, the front passenger arrested was 19-year-old Jacinto Diaz of Greenfield, while the 2 rear passengers taken into custody were 19-year-old Ivan Martinez of Greenfield, and his brother 21-year-old Omar Martinez of Greenfield. King City PD is Looking into Shooting that Happened on November 15

  On November 15, 2022, at 7 pm the King City Police Department responded to a report of multiple shots heard in the area of the 500 Block of North Second Street. Upon arrival KCPD Officers located over 20 spent shell casings and multiple vehicles that sustained bullet impacts. The area was canvassed for suspects, victims, and witnesses. No victims were located. The King City Police Department is requesting assistance from the Community that they review of their home and or business surveillance systems for any suspicious activity 30 minutes prior to and 30 minutes after 7 pm on November 15. Man in Soledad Detained for Possession of a Firearm and Other Charges on November 15

  On Tuesday, November 15 Bail Bond Agents from the bay area tracked a wanted subject, Alejandro Otero, to a residence on West Street in Soledad. They were able to safely apprehend him and secure a loaded firearm he was in possession of.  Officers responded and took custody of Otero and the firearm. He was booked and transported to the Monterey County Jail for active warrants and firearm charges.

King City Police Department Makes 3 Arrests in 2 Days During the Week of November 13

  On Monday, November 14 at approximately 12:00 PM, officers from the King City Police Department were dispatched to 415 Pearl Street on a report of a minor (9-year-old victim) in possession of a controlled substance. The investigation revealed that the victim located a small amount of a controlled substance in his jacket pocket. The victim did not know how the substance got into his pocket. Later on that day at 5 pm, officers contacted 35-year-old Elisa Marie Sanchez of King City who admitted to wearing the victim’s jacket and putting the controlled substance in the pocket. Sanchez was placed under arrest for child endangerment and was booked into the Monterey County Jail. Monterey County District Attorney’s Office Awarded Grant From the Office of Traffic Safety for Specialized DUI Prosecution Team

  Salinas, Calif. – Monterey County District Attorney’s Office will have a specialized prosecution team that handles alcohol and drug-impaired driving cases through a $602,500 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). “Impaired driving continues to be is a growing problem for Monterey County. Drivers under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or drugs pose a deadly threat to us all,” Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni said. “This program allows us to dedicate two prosecutors to focus specifically on holding those who decide to drive impaired accountable for their dangerous actions and to outreach and educate young drivers in an effort to prevent these tragedies from occurring.” The specialized prosecution team will also partner with the statewide Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor Training Program (TSRP) to provide training to other prosecutors and investigators, as well as collaborate with law enforcement agencies on best practices handling and managin

​Hours and Days are changing for COVID-19 community testing sites in Monterey County

  Hours and days are changing for the state supported community COVID-19 testing sites. The demand for testing has decreased as more of the population of Monterey County has received COVID-19 vaccinations and access to home testing has increased. The California Department of Public Health’s Testing Task Force reviews the usage of the testing sites on a regular basis and made recommendations for the reduction in hours and days. Testing continues to be an important part of the COVID-19 response as there continues to be new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. If future changes in case numbers necessitate the need for more testing opportunities, the hours and days of operation can be increased to meet the demand. Blue Green Algae Warnings at Lake San Antonio Changed to Caution

  The County of Monterey Public Works, Facilities and Parks is changing warning signs at Lake San Antonio from “DANGER” to “CAUTION” regarding blue-green algae in lake waters. Test results in August and September of 2022 showed lake water contained Cyanotoxins, toxins produced by blue-green algae and prompted danger warnings. Results from additional testing done in mid-October show Cyanotoxins remain but in reduced amounts, allowing the Danger posting at the lake to be downgraded to Caution. The more favorable results allow visitors to have more, but still limited, use of lake waters. Here are recommendations for lake use under the “Caution” posting: • Stay away from algae and scum in the water. • Keep children away from algae in the water or on the shore • Do not let pets and other animals drink or go into the water or eat scum on the shore. • For fish caught here, throw away guts and clean fillets with tap water or bottled water before cooking. • Do not use this water for drinking or

Truck Hauling Lettuce Catches Fire on Highway 101 Outside of Gonzales on November 12

  A truck transporting produce caught fire on Highway 101 Northbound south of Gonzales sometime between 6 am and 8 am on Saturday, November 12. The #2 lane was shutdown for undetermined amount of time to cleanup the mess on the side of the highway. No injuries were reported.

Manual Tally for the November 8, 2022 General Election in Monterey County

  SALINAS, CA — Monterey County Elections will conduct the one percent manual tally for the November 8, 2022, General Election. Random selection of batches begins at 9:00 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2022. The 1% Manual Tally begins Tuesday, November 15, 2022. Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 in South Monterey County for the Week of November 13

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures in South Monterey County from Sunday, November 13 through Saturday, November 19.  Highway 101:  Soledad Prison: November 16 There will one lane closure along southbound Highway 101 at Soledad Prison for emergency road work   from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Highway 101: State Route 146: November 14 - November 18 There will be full closure of the off ramp of southbound Highway 101 at State Route 146 for bridge work from 8 pm to 6 am. Highway 101: Broadway Street : November 14 - November 17 There will be full closure of the on and off ramps of southbound Highway 101 at Broadway Street for grinding and paving work from 8 am to 4 pm. Pinnacles National Park is Offering Free Admission for Veterans Day on November 11

  Pinnacles National Park will be free for visitors on Friday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day. Pinnacles National Park is partnering with the rest of the National Parks Service by providing free admission for the holiday. Anyone, regardless of their veteran status, can enter any National Park free of charge on Friday, November 11. The West Gate at Pinnacles National Park opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m, while the East Side Entrance at Pinnacles has 24-hour access to trails.

Man in Soledad Arrested on Weapons Charges and Vehicle Code Violations on November 9

  According to the Soledad Police Department, while on patrol on Wednesday night, November 9 K-9 Officer Ambriz conducted a traffic stop for vehicle code violations. While on the stop, the driver identified as Modesto Merino out of Greenfield failed to provide his true name to the Officers. However, Soledad Police Officers were able to identify him, found that he was unlicensed, and took him into custody. While getting ready to inventory and tow the vehicle, K-9 Officer Ambriz's partner Koda found a loaded, unserialized firearm and ammunition in the vehicle. Merino was booked into the Monterey County Jail on weapons and vehicle code violations.

Paso Robles Police Department is Investigating November 9 Shooting

  PASO ROBLES – On Wednesday night, November 9 at around 6:10 pm, the Paso Robles Police Department received a call of shots heard near 80 Cary Street. Officers canvassed the area and located six shell casings in the street, but it appeared that any suspect(s) or possible victim(s) fled the scene. Detectives reviewed surveillance footage and identified two involved vehicles. One vehicle was later located on the 3300 block of Spring Street. Detectives served a search warrant on an apartment building and recovered evidence which may be connected to the shooting. At this time, it is believed nobody was injured or hit by gunfire. There have been no arrests, but there are several persons of interest under investigation. California Rodeo Salinas Debuts 2023 Commemorative Poster

SALINAS, CA, November 9, 2022 – The California Rodeo Salinas commemorates each rodeo with a custom poster. This year President Fred Hooker chose a classic rodeo event and an artist who was commissioned by the California Rodeo Association for the first time. The 2023 poster features saddle bronc rider Wyatt Casper on Calgary Stampede’s horse W- 16 Wild Cherry, at the 2021 California Rodeo Salinas.  A photograph taken by Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association photographer Phil Doyle was used as inspiration for the watercolor painting by western artist Teal Blake.   Blake, who has been painting professionally since 2005, grew up in Montana, on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by ranching country. Growing up in his father’s studio looking at C.M. Russell paintings and reading Will James books inspired him to pick up a pencil and start capturing his own visions of cowboys and the American West.
