TAMC to Host Townhall on December 1 to Launch Participatory Budgeting Election for Greenfield Community Members to Vote on Safe Routes to School Projects”

 

MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in partnership with the City of Greenfield, will host a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, December 1, 2022, to launch the “Greenfield Participatory Budgeting Election.”  The Town Hall meeting will be conducted in Spanish with English translations from 4:30-7:30 pm in the Greenfield Council Chambers, 599 El Camino Real, Greenfield.


 


Through the launch of the Greenfield Participatory Budgeting Election, community members will have the opportunity to learn about proposed Safe Routes to School projects designed to make it safer for kids and families to get to and from city schools, ask questions and cast their votes to help determine how to spend a budget of $250,000.


 


Votes can be cast onsite at the Town Hall meeting, online at: https://bit.ly/GreenfieldPB; or by taking a ballot and dropping it off at one of the following ballot drop-off sites before December 15th:  


·        Greenfield City Hall, 599 El Camino Real, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm


·        Greenfield Union School District, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm


·        Cesar Chavez Elementary School, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm


·        Greenfield Community Center, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm


·        Arroyo Seco Academy, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm


·        Greenfield High School, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm


·        Greenfield Branch Library, Tuesday – Wednesday, 11 am – 7 pm, Thursday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm


·        Oak Avenue Elementary School, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm


·        Vista Verde Middle School, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm


·        Mary Chapa Academy, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm


·        Holy Trinity Church, Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4 pm


Voting is open for any Greenfield residents or workers, age 14 and older. Ballots are available in both English and Spanish and must be submitted by the deadline to be counted. Election results with the winning projects will be announced in February 2023; and will be recommended for implementation to the Greenfield City Council when the Salinas Valley Safe Routes to School Plan is adopted in Spring 2024.


 


Greenfield Safe Routes to School Steering Committee


The list of projects on the ballot were developed by the Greenfield Safe Routes to School Steering Committee. The committee, made up of residents, students, and community advocates, was formed in June 2022 to design and implement the Greenfield Participatory Budgeting process. The committee worked with the Safe Routes to School program partners and the City of Greenfield to develop the list of projects for the community to vote on.

The participatory budgeting process is led by the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Steering Committee which provides leadership and guidance on safe routes to school projects with help and technical support from TAMC staff. The goal of the Safe Routes to School Program is to deliver safe and equitable transportation options that promote the health and wellbeing of Monterey County communities.

King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.

Homicide of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad Under Investigation

  APRIL 8, 2025 SOLEDAD, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an alleged homicide of incarcerated person 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza which occurred on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad. At approximately 5:39 p.m., staff observed incarcerated persons 30-year-old Edgar Frayre and 32-year-old Nicolas Young attacking Joseph Mendoza with improvised weapons on the dayroom floor in Facility C. Staff immediately responded and issued several verbal commands to stop, which were ignored. Staff then deployed multiple less-than-lethal use-of-force options, which ultimately quelled the incident. Frayre and Young were secured in handcuffs. Medical aid was initiated for Mendoza; however, he was pronounced deceased at 6:10 p.m. Medical evaluations were conducted on Frayre and Young, and no serious injuries were reported.
