Blue Green Algae Warnings at Lake San Antonio Changed to Caution

The County of Monterey Public Works, Facilities and Parks is changing warning signs at Lake San

Antonio from “DANGER” to “CAUTION” regarding blue-green algae in lake waters.

Test results in August and September of 2022 showed lake water contained Cyanotoxins, toxins produced by blue-green algae and prompted danger warnings. Results from additional testing done in mid-October

show Cyanotoxins remain but in reduced amounts, allowing the Danger posting at the lake to be

downgraded to Caution.

The more favorable results allow visitors to have more, but still limited, use of lake waters. Here are

recommendations for lake use under the “Caution” posting:

• Stay away from algae and scum in the water.

• Keep children away from algae in the water or on the shore

• Do not let pets and other animals drink or go into the water or eat scum on the shore.

• For fish caught here, throw away guts and clean fillets with tap water or bottled water before

cooking.

• Do not use this water for drinking or cooking.

signs are posted, please visit: https://mywaterquality.ca.gov/habs/resources/faqs_for_hab_signs.htm.
