Blue Zones Project Monterey County Honors Taylor Farms’ Gonzales, CA Facility for Becoming a Blue Zones Project Approved Worksite

Salinas, CA — November 29, 2022 – Blue Zones Project® Monterey County today announced that Taylor Farms in Gonzales, CA has achieved designation as a Blue Zones Project Approved™ worksite. Taylor Farms now has completed the approval process at four of their facilities in Monterey County by implementing best practices to improve employee well-being. The Blue Zones Project celebrates this achievement and acknowledges the commitment Taylor Farms has towards improving well-being for both their employees and our community at large.

“Taylor Farms has been committed to the Blue Zones Project from the start,” said Amy Taylor, wellness consultant for Taylor Farms. “Supporting the community in developing healthy habits was something we wanted to implement at our facilities to ensure that our employees are working in an environment that empowers and improves their lifestyles. We are excited to have our employees engaged in this initiative and hope they will encourage others to be part of it.”

Throughout the various locations, each Taylor Farms has implemented one of the following unique Blue Zones Project implementations: employee gardens, designated “quiet rooms” as downshift spaces, a library, outdoor patio, and two foyers are also available for employees to relax. Bicycle storage and Blue Zones Parking areas were also established, encouraging natural movement to work.

“At Taylor Farms Gonzales we want to encourage our employees to live happy, healthy and longer life,” said Ofelia Arias, operations and production analyst, Taylor Farms, Gonzales.

“That is why it is important for us to become a Blue Zones Project approved worksite and implement best practices that support our employee’s well-being. We have added an employee garden to encourage fresh air breaks and created a BZP walking path to encourage employees to take walks during their breaks and lunch to feel better throughout the day. We also distribute salads and/or veggie trays for employees to enjoy a healthy snack every Friday!”

“The leadership shown by Taylor Farms to engage all of the Monterey County facilities is impressive, and impactful. Large employers have the capacity to create true impact in creating a sustainable environment of well-being simply by starting with their employees.” Tiffany DiTullio, Blue Zones Project Monterey County Executive Director shared.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
