Updated Face Mask Guidance in Monterey County as of September 30, 2022

  On July 19, 2021, in response to increased transmission of the COVID-19 Delta variant, the County of Monterey Health Department recommended that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors in public places. On September 20, 2022, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued updates to its Guidance for the Use of Face Masks. As of September 30, 2022, Monterey County Health Department recommends that Monterey County employers, residents and visitors refer to the most recent CDPH guidance regarding use of face masks. Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 in South Monterey County for the Week of October 2

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for South Monterey County from Sunday, October 2 through Saturday, October 8.  Highway 101: Teague Avenue – Jolon Road (South): October 3 – October 7 One lane closure will occur along southbound Highway 101 between Teague Avenue and  Jolon Road south  for miscellaneous work from 7 am to 4 pm. Highway 101: Jolon Road (North) – Teague Avenue: October 3 – October 7 One lane closure will occur along northbound Highway 101 between Jolon Road and Teague Avenue  for striping operation work from 8 am to 4 pm. 2 King City Gang Members Sentenced to Life in Prison for 2019 Murder of Man in Greenfield

  On Thursday, September 29 in Monterey County Superior Court in Salinas, 2 gang members were sentenced to life in prison for murdering a man who was washing his car outside a Greenfield home in January of 2019. 21-year-old Eduardo "Sleepy" Anaya Solis and 24-year-old Jose "Trips" Juarez, both from King City, were convicted in June of 2022 for their involvement in the murder of 19-year-old Charles Adolfo Jose of Greenfield. They, along with 3 other gang members, were looking for a rival gang member to kill and chose Jose because he was wearing red. Jose was outside his friend's home washing his car on 7th Street when he was approached and shot 24 times by Solis and another shooter; six of the bullets hit Jose, while the rest of the bullets hit 2 occupied homes and 3 parked vehicles. Jose was not a gang member and was shot for wearing red outside his friend's home while washing his car. The 5 gang members conspired with and were supplied by Juarez with 3 fire

Fatal Vehicle Wreck on Highway 101 Outside of Greenfield

  According to the King City CHP, 1 driver died and another driver received minor injuries as a result of a high speed vehicle pursuit on Thursday, September 29. The chase began at 2:35 pm as Patrol Officers were trying to stop a driver in a Toyota Prius going southbound on Highway 101 north of Chualar who continued to Underwood south of Greenfield. The driver in the Prius who was driving as fast as 105 mph was killed after drifting into the #2 lane crashing into a Big Rig. The driver in the Big Rig picked up minor injuries. The Highway 101 Northbound lanes in this area were blocked off for several hours along with 1 lane on Southbound 101 as traffic was diverted to Metz Road in King City.   37-year-old Juan Hernandez was busted off of 12th Street in Greenfield at 11:22 am on Wednesday, September 28 for Arson, Being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Man in King City Arrested for Attempted Carjacking, Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Brandishing a Deadly Weapon on September 28

The King City Police Department reports that on Wednesday night, September 28 at 6:46 pm officers were dispatched to meet with a member of the community at the Police Department for a report of a possible carjacking. When officers arrived on the scene, they met the victim who told them he was struck by 2 subjects who attempted to carjack him. The victim said the incident occurred on the 100 block of South Vanderhurst Avenue and he walked to the Police Department to report the incident. While speaking with the victim officers determined the victim had sustained injuries from the attempted carjacking at which time he was transported to a local hospital due to the injuries he suffered from the 2 subjects. King City Police Officers reviewed city surveillance video and were able to gather additional information pertaining to the description of the 2 suspects. SPCA Protecting Wild and Domestic Birds - Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

  SPCA Monterey County is working to protect wild and domestic birds from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), a virus that is naturally spread among wild birds worldwide. Commonly affected wild species include ducks, geese, shorebirds, raptors, and corvids. HPAI can also infect domestic poultry such as chickens, turkeys, and pheasants.  In early 2022, the Eurasian H5 strain of HPAI was detected in the United States. On July 14, 2022, California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced the first detection of avian influenza H5N1 in California. The virus was detected in two Canada geese and one American white pelican in Colusa and Glenn Counties. While HPAI has not yet been detected in Monterey County, SPCA Monterey County is taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of the virus at our shelter and Wildlife Center. Homeboy Art Academy Program comes to Monterey County Juvenile Hall on September 30

  Art is one of the many activities used to help youth incarcerated in Monterey County’s Juvenile Hall make positive changes in their lives, and a special program with a renowned teaching artist will be at the County’s Juvenile Hall on Friday, September 30. This program will be directed by Fabian Debora, the executive director of the Homeboy Art Academy (a division of Homeboy Industries), an organization widely recognized for both its comprehensive rehabilitation for justice impacted individuals and serving as the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. In operation for over 30 years in Los Angeles, Homeboy Industries provides targeted training, therapy, rehabilitation programs, and re-entry services to formerly gang-involved and incarcerated persons, allowing them to redirect their lives. 2 People Detained for Burglary in Greenfield on September 27

  48-year-old Lorena Mendoza and 32-year-old Mysterie Pedockie were arrested for burglary off of the 100 block of 9th Street in Greenfield at 6:59 am on Tuesday, September 27.  

Dog Dies in House Fire in Paso Robles on September 27

  A structure fire broke out on the 700 block of 23rd street in Paso Robles at 7:25 pm on Tuesday night, September 27. When emergency crews arrived on the scene they discovered that there was a fire inside of a room of the house. All occupants were able to evacuate the house safely no injuries were reported other than a German Shepherd dog. Firefighters attempted life saving efforts on the dog but were unsuccessful in their efforts to revive the dog. The cause of the fire in under investigation at this time.

King City Man Caught and Arrested in Tuolumne County for December 2021 Triple Homicide in King City

The King City Police Department reports that they obtained an arrest warrant during the week of September 25, 2022 for 3 counts of Homicide for 20-year-old Elizar Ayron Arellano of King City for his involvement in the murders of Carlos Manuel Lopez, Selena Gonzalez Godoy, and Godoy’s unborn child on December 26, 2021 in King City. Arellano fled the area after the homicides at which time the The King City Police Department then requested assistance from the United States Marshall’s Service Fugitive Task Force in locating Arellano. The Marshall’s Service developed information that Arellano was in Tuolumne County. On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, the Marshall’s Service and officers from the King City PD traveled to Tuolumne and Mariposa Counties to try and find Arellano. During their search efforts Arellano was located and arrested on the 6000 Block of Greely Hill Road in Coulterville, CA by the Marshall’s Service and King City Police Department.   31-year-old Jose Raul Ponce was taken into custody off of Emily Circle in Greenfield at 9:40 pm on Monday night, September 26 for Domestic Violence. The victims were a 29-year-old female and a 3-year-old Juvenile. 

Woman in Greenfield Arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Other Charges on September 26

  26-year-old Veronica Reyes was arrested off of Elm Avenue in Greenfield at 8:21 pm on Monday night, September 26 for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Domestic Violence and Child Endangerment. The victims were a 36-year-old male along with a 10-year-old Juvenile, a 6-year-old Juvenile and a 3-year-old Juvenile. 

Trailer Fire Knocked Down in Greenfield on September 26

  A trailer caught fire off of Primavera Court in Greenfield at around 5:30 am on Monday, September 26. Fire Chief Jim Langborg said that the trailer received damage along with a car that was nearby. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within a few minutes. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is suspicious in nature and is under investigation. 

Scam Alert in Monterey County

  According to a statement made by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, September 27 scammers are making phone calls and identifying themselves as members of the Sheriff's Office. They are using actual names and ranks of Deputies, Sergeants, and Commanders and soliciting money from victims due to outstanding warrants. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office will NOT call and demand or request any money for any reason. If you get such a call it is a SCAM so do not send any money to them. The Sheriff's Office advises the public to please stay aware and diligent to prevent from being taken advantage of. 

CHP to Conduct Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint

  **LOCATION ANNOUNCEMENT** Monterey County – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Monterey Area will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday night, September 23, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on eastbound Carmel Valley Road, east of Carmel Rancho Boulevard, in unincorporated Monterey County.   All too often members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by intoxicated drivers.  The goal of the CHP is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated drivers. Jayne Street Solar Streetlight Project Dedication Ceremony in King City on September 23

  The City of King held a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on September 22 to dedicate completion of the Jayne Street Solar Streetlight Project.  The project includes 8 new streetlights on Jayne Street covering the entire street, which is the City’s first solar streetlight project.    The project cost approximately $115,000, which was funded primarily by King City Community Power.  Increasing streetlights was one of the highest ranking priorities identified by the community in the citywide survey and one of the goals of King City Community Power when it was formed.  According to Mayor Mike LeBarre, “King City Community Power was formed to keep much needed revenue locally for community needs.  That funding is now helping us light our streets to increase safety, security and a better quality of life for our community, which is our top priority.”   The solar streetlight program is the final phase of a three-phase program to increase streetlights throughout the City.  The first and sec

The Arts Council for Monterey County (Arts4MC) and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will unveil a new mural in the County of Monterey Administration Building on Tuesday, September 27th at Noon. September Safety Operation in King City on September 22

City of King – September is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the King City Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Safety Operation on September 22, 2022, at various intersections throughout the city. These types of operations are about saving lives and preventing injuries. The goal of these operations is to make the roadways safer for pedestrians. During this operation, the King City Police Department deployed a pedestrian decoy 144 times crossing the street and on 24 (17%) occasions drivers failed to yield for the pedestrian crossing the street within a marked crosswalk. Of the 24 people who failed to yield to the pedestrian with the right of way, 14 drivers were issued citations for failing to yield to the right of way of the pedestrian. In addition, during the operation one other driver was pulled over and issued a citation for failing to stop for a red light. Of the 15 drivers who received citations, two drivers were driving on suspended licenses and received misdemeanor citations. T

Attempted Robbery and Attempted Homicide Incident in King City on September 22

On September 22, 2022, at approximately 10:38pm, officers from the King City Police Department with assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of a shooting in the area of the 700 Block of South Vanderhurst Street. Upon arrival, officers initiated an investigation and subsequently located a victim on the 48000 block of Loneoak Street with a gunshot wound to the back. The investigation has preliminarily revealed four subjects approached the victim and a group of other individuals and demanded their wallets. An altercation ensued and the victim was shot once in the back. The victim then fled into the 48000 block of Loneoak Street and called for assistance. The investigation is ongoing. The King City Police Department is requesting that the public residing on the 400 to 700 block of S. Temporary Greenfield Street Pop-Up Safety Demonstration

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Residents of Greenfield will have an opportunity to experience a street makeover designed to be safer and more comfortable for all users. To improve safety and encourage walking and bicycling, the City of Greenfield, in partnership with The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), Ecology Action, and the Monterey County Health Department, has installed temporary pedestrian improvements along 12th Street. 12th Street is heavily used by families and children attending Arroyo Seco Academy, Oak Avenue Elementary School, and Vista Verde Middle School, and has been identified as a safe route to school corridor in the Salinas Valley Safe Routes to School planning process. Sunlight Giving Awards Mee Memorial Hospital in King City a $225,000 Grant to Use Over 3 years

  KING CITY, Calif., — The board of directors of Sunlight Giving has awarded a multi-year grant in the amount of $225,000 to Mee Memorial Hospital in King City. South Monterey County’s only hospital has agreed to use the grant for general support, $75,000 per year for 3 years. The Palo Alto-based nonprofit Sunlight Giving seeks to build vibrant, diverse and safe communities where all families have access to stable shelter, food security, quality health care, joy and opportunity. Sunlight Giving believes that health care is a human right and should be accessible to all. A Visit from Edgar Allan Poe: In the Shadow of the Raven; Paso Robles City Library to Host Unique One-Man Theatrical Experience

Aera Soccer Park Field Closure in King City

The King City Aera Soccer Park field will be closed for all play beginning this week through January 2023.  The soccer field was recently renovated in 2020 with a grant from Aera Energy, but regular use has damaged the turf.  Therefore, it is necessary to close the field for additional reseeding and restoration.    In order to protect the field so the renovation work will be successful, nobody will be allowed on the field.  Signage and fencing will be installed during the upcoming week.  As a result, any illegal access to the field may result in issuance of a citation and fine.   All ongoing soccer games are being relocated to San Antonio Park during this period.   The City has worked hard during the past few years to improve its sports fields to provide higher quality facilities for outdoor recreation for the community, particularly youth activities.  Therefore, the City requests everyone’s support of these efforts by honoring the closure and appreciates everyone’s cooperation.      

Jayne Street Solar Streetlight Project Dedication Ceremony in King City on September 22

The City of King has completed construction of new solar streetlights on Jayne Street.  Everyone is invited to attend a dedication ceremony of the Jayne Street Solar Streetlight Project on Thursday, September 22nd at 5:30 p.m. in front of the King City Migrant Center at 440 Jayne Street.   It is the City’s first solar streetlight project, and it was funded by King City Community Power.  Increasing streetlights was one of the highest ranking priorities identified by the community in the citywide survey and one of the goals of King City Community Power when it was formed.  Jayne Street was selected as the first project site after the City received input from the employees and residents of the Migrant Center regarding how dark it was at night when they walked to their vehicles.  This project will be instrumental in improving the Jayne Street area and overall public safety in the community.   Questions can be directed to City Hall at 831-385-3281.

Man in Greenfield Taken Into Custody for Assault and Other Charges on September 20

31-year-old Rhamset Iribe-Torres was arrested on Palm Avenue Assault, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Threats, and Vandalism in Greenfield at 3:41 pm on Tuesday, September 20. The victim was a 30-year-old male. Iribe-Torres was booked into the Monterey County Jail.

27-year-old Armando Huitzil was arrested for a probation violation and violation of a domestic violence restraining order off of Clifton Court in Greenfield at 1:40 pm on Monday, September 19.

Man in Gonzales Detained for Possession of a Loaded Unregistered Handgun and Rifle and Other Charges on September 18

  According to the Gonzales Police Department, Officers at 10:54 pm on Sunday night, September 18 conducted a traffic stop on the 1400 block of Burgundy Way for a Vehicle Code Violation and discovered that the driver was suspended and in Possession of a Loaded Unregistered Handgun and Rifle. The Suspect was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.

51-year-old Tomas Chavez was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon off of El Camino Real in Greenfield at 1:46 pm on Sunday, September 18. The victim was a 64-year-old male.

  19-year-old Giovanny Gonzalez was taken into custody for domestic violence and false imprisonment off of Tuscany Avenue in Greenfield at 7:07 am on Friday, September 16. The victim was an 18-year-old female.

County of Monterey Fish and Wildlife Protection, Preservation Grants are Now Available; Application Deadline is October 19

  The County of Monterey offers grant funding for projects that enhance or improve local wildlife. The application window for this funding is now open. These grants can support a wide variety of work, from boots on the ground habitat or environmental projects to education and scientific research. Grants typically range from $2,000 to $10,000 but may be approved in any amount. A total of $40,000 is available. Funds are provided by the Propagation Grant Fund (PGF) to eligible persons or organizations. Past projects funded by the PGF include: • Removing nets and fishing equipment that ensnare marine life, including migrating whales, from the Monterey Bay • Releasing 160,000 Chinook salmon smolts in the Monterey Bay to mitigate impacts of habitat degradation • Providing ocean-going education programs for Monterey County students • Planting native milkweed to improve habitat for monarch butterflies • Providing free, non-lead ammunition to County residents to protect area birds of prey inclu

Semi Truck Accident on Highway 101 Outside of Gonzales

A 1 vehicle collision involving a Semi Truck happened on Highway 101 Southbound near the Gloria Road exit outside of Gonzales at 10:27 pm on Thursday night, September 15. The crash caused numerous traffic delays during the overnight and early morning hours on Friday, September 16 as vehicles were diverted in another direction so work crews could clean up debris and fluids that were on the roadway. Minor injuries from the accident were reported. The cause of the wreck is unknown. 

Vehicle vs Pedestrian Accident in Greenfield

  On Thursday afternoon, September 15 sometime before 4:00 P.M., Greenfield Police and Fire Departments, along with AMR responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision that took place off of Elm Avenue and 4th Street. The juvenile suffered injuries that required transportation to a Bay Area hospital by helicopter. The driver remained on the scene and was cooperative with police, but was found to be driving without a license and was subsequently arrested; the vehicle was also impounded. Man in Greenfield Taken Into Custody for Sexual Battery and a Warrant on September 15

40-year-old Guillermo Herrera was arrested for sexual battery and a warrant off of Cherry Avenue in Greenfield at 1:41 am on Thursday, September 15. The victim was a 21-year-old female. 

2 Vehicles Vandalized in Greenfield on September 14

Structure Fire Put Out in Greenfield on September 15

  Firefighters in Greenfield extinguished a structure fire that broke out off of El Camino Real in Greenfield on Thursday, September 15. The blaze started at 3:25 am and was contained to the room of origin. Heat and smoke damaged 75% of the building. The Greenfield Fire Department suspects that arson is what caused the fire. The structure used to be a thrift store that closed down shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic started over 2 years ago. The estimated loss in property damage due to the fire is between $30,000 and $35,000. Greenfield Man Arrested Busted for Stabbing Murder in King City

On Wednesday night, September 14 at approximately 7:28 PM, officers from the King City Police Department were dispatched to a motel on the 0 block of Broadway Circle for a report of a stabbing incident. Upon arrival, officers located a 27-year-old Hispanic male victim laying on the ground. The male was suffering from multiple stab wounds. Officers began first aid and continued until medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending formal notification of the victim’s next of kin by the Coroner’s Division of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators worked the case throughout the night examining evidence, conducting interviews, and reviewing video surveillance footage and developed a suspect identified as 27-year-old Kevin James Powell of Greenfield, CA. 28-year-old Jorge Cuevas was taken into custody for domestic violence off of Vasquez Avenue in Greenfield at 6:24 pm on Tuesday night, September 13. The victims were a 33-year-old female, a 41-year-old male and a 4-year-old juvenile.

  Three 13-year-old Juveniles were arrested for assault resulting in head injuries off of Elm Avenue in Greenfield at 8:58 am on Tuesday, September 13. The victim was a 14-year-old Juvenile.
