Temporary Greenfield Street Pop-Up Safety Demonstration

 

MONTEREY COUNTY – Residents of Greenfield will have an opportunity to experience a street

makeover designed to be safer and more comfortable for all users. To improve safety and

encourage walking and bicycling, the City of Greenfield, in partnership with The Transportation

Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), Ecology Action, and the Monterey County Health

Department, has installed temporary pedestrian improvements along 12th Street.

12th Street is heavily used by families and children attending Arroyo Seco Academy, Oak Avenue

Elementary School, and Vista Verde Middle School, and has been identified as a safe route to

school corridor in the Salinas Valley Safe Routes to School planning process. The temporary

pop-up event along 12th Street near the intersections of Apple Avenue, Oak Avenue, and Elm

Avenue features:

• Temporary curb extensions and the creation of a median center, with the goal of making

crossings easier and safer

• High-visibility crosswalks at Apple Avenue

Community members of all ages are encouraged to test the new design, now through

October 14, 2022, by walking and biking along the corridor and providing feedback to the

planning team. An anonymous survey will be available in English and Spanish for pedestrians,

drivers, and cyclists to provide feedback by one of the three following methods:

1. Scan the QR code on the Pop-Up Demonstration Poster on 12th Street at the

intersections at Apple Avenue, Oak Avenue, or Elm Avenue and take the short survey

2. Provide feedback on-line at https://saferoutesmonterey.org/planning-salinas/

3. Pick up a survey from the boxes posted along the route; fill it out and return it by mail in

the pre-posted envelope provided with the survey

Emphasizing the importance of the pop-up demonstration, Greenfield Councilmember Yanely

Martinez said, “After hearing from our community members and students the safety pop- up

demonstration is a must to the future planning of the community members safety. This is the

first step forward in assuring our commitment to public safety.”

Ariana Green, TAMC Principal Planner and manager of the Transportation Agency’s “Safe

Routes to School Program”, is excited that community members can provide input on projects

like this, which will make it easier and safer for families to travel around their neighborhoods

and throughout the city.

The implementation of the pop-up demonstration is part of the City of Greenfield Safe Routes

to School Plan. The Plan is a partnership between the Transportation Agency for Monterey

County, City of Greenfield, Monterey County Health Department, Ecology Action, and the

Greenfield Union School District.

The project is funded through a Caltrans Sustainable Communities Transportation Planning

Grant, matched with local Measure X funds. Following the temporary pop-up demonstration,

the planning team will develop the draft Safe Routes to Schools Plan for all K-12 public schools

in Greenfield, King City, Soledad, and Gonzales, which will be completed in early 2024.

King City City Council Announces Selection of José Arreola as New City Manager

  January 7, 2025-Following an extensive recruitment process, José Arreola has been selected by the King City City Council to be its next City Manager. Arreola will replace Steve Adams, who is retiring after serving in the position for the past 10 years. Arreola was selected from 31 applicants and 8 finalists for the position. The King City City Council will formally consider the proposed city manager contract at its meeting on Tuesday night, January 13. King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.
