Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 in South Monterey County for the Week of September 18


MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for South Monterey County from Sunday, September 18 through Saturday, September 24. 

Highway 101: Arroyo Seco Road – Harden Farms Road: September 21
One lane closure will occur along southbound Highway 101 between Arroyo Seco Road and Harden Farms Road for landscaping work along the highway from 9 am to 1 pm.

Highway 101: Arroyo Seco Road – State Route 146: September 22
One lane closure will occur along northbound Highway 101 between Arroyo Seco Road and State Route 146 for landscaping work along the highway from 9 am to 1 pm.

Highway 101: Teague Avenue – Broadway Street: September 19 – September 23
One lane closure will occur along southbound Highway 101 between Teague Avenue and Broadway Street (south) for work on the median barrier from 7 am to 3 pm.

Highway 101: First Street: September 21 – September 22
There will be full closure of the northbound on ramp of Highway 101 at First Street for miscellaneous work from 8 am to 4 pm.

Highway 101: Front Street: Long-Term
Alternating lane closures will occur along Front Street at Highway 101 for K-rail installation work from 6 am to 6 pm.

Highway 101: SB Jolon Road: Long - Term
There will be full closure of the on and off ramps of southbound Highway 101 at Jolon Road for paving operation work. From 3 am to 11:59 pm.

Highway 101:  Camp Roberts Rest Areas: Long-Term
There will be full closure of the Camp Roberts Rest Areas on northbound and southbound Highway 101 for work to upgrade the facility from 10 am to 12 pm.

Highway 101: First Street – Jolon Road, King City: Long-Term
There will be one lane closure along northbound and southbound Highway 101 from First Street to Jolon Road for roadway excavation and pavement work from 8 am to 4 pm. Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Homicide of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad Under Investigation

  APRIL 8, 2025 SOLEDAD, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an alleged homicide of incarcerated person 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza which occurred on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad. At approximately 5:39 p.m., staff observed incarcerated persons 30-year-old Edgar Frayre and 32-year-old Nicolas Young attacking Joseph Mendoza with improvised weapons on the dayroom floor in Facility C. Staff immediately responded and issued several verbal commands to stop, which were ignored. Staff then deployed multiple less-than-lethal use-of-force options, which ultimately quelled the incident. Frayre and Young were secured in handcuffs. Medical aid was initiated for Mendoza; however, he was pronounced deceased at 6:10 p.m. Medical evaluations were conducted on Frayre and Young, and no serious injuries were reported. King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.
