Homeboy Art Academy Program comes to Monterey County Juvenile Hall on September 30

Art is one of the many activities used to help youth incarcerated in Monterey County’s Juvenile

Hall make positive changes in their lives, and a special program with a renowned teaching artist

will be at the County’s Juvenile Hall on Friday, September 30.

This program will be directed by Fabian Debora, the executive director of the Homeboy Art

Academy (a division of Homeboy Industries), an organization widely recognized for both its

comprehensive rehabilitation for justice impacted individuals and serving as the largest gang

rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world.

In operation for over 30 years in Los Angeles, Homeboy Industries provides targeted

training, therapy, rehabilitation programs, and re-entry services to formerly gang-involved and

incarcerated persons, allowing them to redirect their lives.

The public is invited to meet Fabian Debora and student artists on Friday, September 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Monterey County Juvenile Hall located at 1420 Natividad Road in Salinas. Debora will give an overview of his program and will be joined by Assistant Chief Probation Officer Jose Ramirez and

Probation Division Manager Julie Kenyon. For those who wish to stay and watch the class, you

are welcome to do so but video or photos which identify youth in the program are strictly

prohibited.

This program is part of the Monterey County Probation Department’s efforts to provide innovative

and holistic approaches towards rehabilitating youthful offenders as it looks ahead to changes in

the state’s youth justice system. Senate Bill 823, signed in September 2020, transfers the

responsibility of all justice-involved youthful offenders to counties and closes California’s State

Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) by June 30, 2023. SB 823 has provided the opportunity for

local probation departments to create a secure rehabilitation program, as well as develop other

therapeutic interventions that meet the specific and individualized needs of youth and young

adults who would have previously been housed at DJJ.

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
