County of Monterey Fish and Wildlife Protection, Preservation Grants are Now Available; Application Deadline is October 19

The County of Monterey offers grant funding for projects that enhance or improve local wildlife.

The application window for this funding is now open. These grants can support a wide variety of

work, from boots on the ground habitat or environmental projects to education and scientific

research. Grants typically range from $2,000 to $10,000 but may be approved in any amount. A

total of $40,000 is available.

Funds are provided by the Propagation Grant Fund (PGF) to eligible persons or organizations.

Past projects funded by the PGF include:

• Removing nets and fishing equipment that ensnare marine life, including migrating

whales, from the Monterey Bay

• Releasing 160,000 Chinook salmon smolts in the Monterey Bay to mitigate impacts of

habitat degradation

• Providing ocean-going education programs for Monterey County students

• Planting native milkweed to improve habitat for monarch butterflies

• Providing free, non-lead ammunition to County residents to protect area birds of prey

including eagles and endangered condors

The Monterey County Fish and Game Advisory Commission will review grant applications and

make funding recommendations to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors for a final

decision.

PGF awards are funded by fines and settlements collected for violations of California Fish and

Game laws within Monterey County.

Applications must be received by October 19, 2022.
