With it being so hot outside right now many pets, especially dogs are having a tough time dealing with the summer heat. Stewart suggested that when you take your dog for a walk make sure you do it early in the morning or later in the evening because if the temperature is at least 87 degrees outside then the asphalt can be as hot as 143 degrees which can affect the pads of dogs on the bottom of their paws. Panetta Cosponsors Bill to help Vets work in Ag

WASHINGTON, DC  – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) cosponsored the Veteran Empowerment and Training to Facilitate Agricultural Revitalization and Mobilization Act (VET-2-FARM Act) of 2018 in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, July 26. By ensuring that all veterans are eligible for support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and enabling community partners to work with veterans interested in agriculture, this legislation will help veterans earn jobs in agriculture following their military service. The average age of the American farmer stands at 58 years old, and U.S. agriculture is in dire need of a new generation of farmers.  Service members departing active service and veterans are an under-tapped population when it comes to feeding, fueling, and clothing the world, and their service in uniform makes them uniquely prepared to carry out the hard work it takes to be a farmer. “This bill is a step forward in continuing our commitment to veterans who have br

Panetta talks about aid to farmers hurt by trade war

On Tuesday, July 24, District 20 Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) released a statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced its plan for a $12 billion package of emergency aid to farmers caught in the Trump Administration’s escalating trade war. "As President Trump threatens billions of dollars in more trade tariffs, the U.S. agriculture industry is caught in the crosshair. The action by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is an admission that domestic farmers and ranchers are being harmed by these broad, unilateral trade enforcement actions. As the representative of the Salad Bowl of the World, from a state that leads the nation in agricultural exports, I urge the Administration to work to expand U.S. agricultural exports abroad, not continue to close international markets and damage industries at home.” Earlier this month, Congressman Panetta  co-introduced bipartisan legislation  that would require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to adju

Phone scam alert in Monterey County

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is seeing an increase in phone call scam attempts this summer. These attackers usually want money, information, access to your computer or all three. They do this by tricking you into doing what they want by creating situations that seem very urgent. They want to get you off-balance by scaring you, so you won’t think clearly, and then rush you into making a mistake. Some of the most common examples include: • The caller pretends that they are from a government  tax department or a tax collection service and that you have unpaid taxes. They explain that if you don’t pay your taxes right away you will go to jail. They then will pressure you to pay your taxes with your credit card over the phone. City of Greenfield has new Fire Dept

The city of Greenfield now has its own fire department.  On Monday, July 1 the city's fire personnel were all sworn in.  It’s a change from the fire and emergency services the city has had for over 70 years.  Since 1940, the Greenfield Fire Protection District has responded to fire and emergency medical services in the city of Greenfield and the surrounding areas.  However, this week, the fire district is now transitioning into a fire department.  The major difference between a Fire Protection District and a fire department is where they receive their funding. The fire district mostly receives their money through property taxes which wasn't helping them as much financially as they had once hoped and they decided to receive money through the city's general fund and also from Measure C which was passed by more than two thirds of voters in a special election in May of 2018.
