Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murder in King City in 2021

  A man was sentenced in Monterey County Superior Court on Wednesday, August 31 to serve life in prison after previously pleading guilty to the murders of 3 people in King City on Dec. 26, 2021, including an unborn child. 21-year-old Raul Omar Lucas was sentenced to 58 years to life in prison for 3 counts of murder while using a firearm to benefit a street gang. Lucas and three other gang members drove to Sussex Way and shot 20-year-old Carlos Lopez and his girlfriend 18-year-old Selina Godoy who was 10 weeks pregnant, as they tried to exit their vehicle. The vehicle the gang used was caught on surveillance cameras in the area fleeing the murder scene. A search warrant was issued for a residence in King City, and the murder weapon was found with Lucas' DNA on it. Due to Lucas committing the crime when he was under the age of 26, he will be entitled to youthful offender parole in 25 years.

King City Man Busted for Possession 2 Ghost Guns

  According to the King City Police Department on Wednesday, August 17  at 11:08  PM,  officers  contacted 24-year-old Anthony Morales Garza during a traffic stop.  During the contact, Garza was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol, later determined to be a “ghost gun”.  As a result, Garza was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.      On Tuesday, August 30 at 7:20 AM, officers from the King City Police Department served  a  search  warrant  at  Garza’s  residence  located  on  the  600  block  of  Bassett  Street.    During  the  search,  an  AR‐15  style  rifle,  rifle  magazines  and  ammunition  were  located.  An investigation  determined the rifle to be a “ghost gun” as well.        Additional  charges  for  possession  of  an  illegal  firearm  are  pending.    The  King  City  Police  Department  thanks  the  community  for  their  assistance  and  continued  support.   Anyone with further information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the King City

King City Police Department Launches New Records Management System

In  2021,  the  King  City  Police  Department  launched  an  assessment  of  existing  technology  resources utilized during day‐to‐day operations.  Technology items such as body worn cameras,  electronic  control  devices  (TASER),  in‐car  cameras,  and  a  records  management  system  were  identified as critical equipment for replacement.  A review of vendors was conducted, and AXON  Enterprises was selected to provide services to the Police Department.  AXON Enterprises is a  global  leader  law  enforcement  technology  that  has  been  providing  law  enforcement  services  since 1993.  In addition, they stood out from others due to their ability to provide all the items in  one  comprehensive  package,  built‐in  warranty  programs,  scheduled  equipment  replacement,  technology updates, and collateral training services.    In December 2021, the City Council authorized the Police Department to enter into a 10‐year  agreement  with  AXON  Enterprises  for  law  enforcement  te

1 Person was Arrested and 8 People were Cited for License Violations at Paso Robles DUI Checkpoint on August 27

  Paso Robles, Calif. – 1 person was arrested for driving under the influence and 8 people were cited for driving without a license while Paso Robles Police were conducting a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, August 27. The checkpoint was held on the 900 block of Creston Road from 7:00 p.m. to time 1:00 a.m. Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, Paso Robles Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe when they are traveling. The Paso Robles Police Department will hold another DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint between September and January. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

1 Arrest & 20 Citations Issued at King City DUI Checkpoint on August 27

  The King City PD reports that 1 person was arrested for Reckless Driving near a DUI checkpoint  in King City, CA on August 27, 2022.  The DUI checkpoint was held at Broadway Street and Canal  Street from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. During the course of the DUI checkpoint 20 drivers were issued  citations for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, 404  vehicles were contacted, 1 person was arrested for other criminal charges, and 6 sets of field  sobriety tests were conducted which resulted in no DUI arrests.      DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving‐ related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking  suspected impaired drivers off the roads. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from  the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety  Administration. 

2 People in Greenfield Arrested for Burglary on August 28

  47-year-old Lorena Mendoza and 39-year-old Victor Romero were arrested for burglary on Apple Avenue in Greenfield at 2:38 am on Sunday, August 28.

  A strong arm robbery happened on El Camino Real at Fast Trip in Greenfield at 3:23 am on Sunday, August 28.

Burglaries in Greenfield on August 26

  A burglary was reported at a residence on the 200 block of 10th Street in Greenfield at 1:57 pm on Friday, August 26, while another burglary was reported at a residence off of 6th Street in Greenfield at 6:05 pm on Friday night, August 26. 

Robbery in Gonzales on August 27

Structure Fire Put Out in Greenfield on August 27

  On Saturday, August 27 at 4:05 am Pine Canyon Firefighters along with CAL FIRE BEU Soledad responded to assist Greenfield Professional Firefighters with a structure fire off of Elm Avenue and 7th Street. The fire was contained to the home of origin and no injuries were reported. 

ATV Fire Outside of King City Knocked Down on August 26

  On Friday, August 26 at 3:40 pm Pine Canyon Firefighters along with CAL FIRE BEU responded to a ATV fire that broke out off of Spreckles Road and Metz Road outside of King City. The fire was contained and no injuries were reported. 

Monterey County Sheriff's Office Looking Into Homicide Incident in South Monterey County on August 25

  The Monterey County Sheriff's Office reports that they're investigating a homicide after a body was found in the Sycamore Flats area of Arroyo Seco on Thursday morning, August 25. At least 1 person was killed. Deputies are describing the incident as an attempted break-in. The person killed has been identified as 29-year-old Jose Gomez Jr. of Salinas. More information will be provided once it becomes available. 

King City Man Sentenced to 6 Years in Jail for Lewd Acts on a Minor

  20-year-old Christopher Garduno of King City man was sentenced in Monterey County Superior Court on Friday, August 26 to 6 years in state prison for lewd acts on a child. Garduno must also register as a sex offender for no less than 20 years. Garduno pled no contest to a charge of committing lewd acts on a child under the age of 14 and also admitted to having another serious felony offense conviction. On August 28, 2021, Monterey County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a runaway 13-year-old girl who had returned to her home. The girl told deputies that she met Garduno on a social media app and that he knew she was only 13. Garduno convinced the girl he was under 18 when he committed the lewd act at the victim's home. After Garduno came over, the 2 left the home which prompted the victim's mother to call deputies. After a forensic test was conducted on both of them, DNA was located.

Man Convicted in SLO County Superior Court for Robbing Bank in Paso Robles

  47-year-old Andrew William Gilbertson received a second conviction in SLO County Superior Court during the week of August 21 for attempted robbery of a Chase Bank in Paso Robles in 2021. The incident happened when Gilbertson entered the Chase bank in Paso Robles in of September 2021 attempting to exchange damaged money. Upon being told that was prohibited, Gilbertson passed a note demanding money and threatened the teller by showing a gun. Gilbertson had previously been convicted for robbing a Bank of America in San Luis Obispo in 2015 and then was convicted again for arson in 2021. A sentencing hearing for Gilbertson has been scheduled for October 27.

City of Paso Robles Appoints New Airport Manager

  PASO ROBLES, CA. Man in Greenfield Taken into Custody for Domestic Battery and Child Endangerment on August 24

  39-year-old Jesus Martinez was arrested for a domestic battery and child endangerment incident off of 7th Street in Greenfield at 11:14 pm on Wednesday night, August 24.

Residential Burglary in Greenfield

The Greenfield PD is investigating a report that was filed at 3:51 pm on Wednesday, August 24 regarding a burglary that occurred off of 10th Street in Greenfield. King City Police Department will Conduct DUI Checkpoint on August 27

King City, Calif. – On August 27, 2022, the King City Police Department will conduct a driving under the  influence (DUI) Checkpoint on Saturday night, August 27 from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the intersection of Broadway Street and  Canal Street.   DUI  checkpoint  locations  are  determined  based  on  data  showing  incidents  of  impaired  driving‐related crashes.  The  primary  purpose  of  DUI  checkpoints  are  to  promote  public  safety  by  taking  suspected impaired drivers off the road.    “Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Anthony Shaw said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”    The King City Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Octavio Hurtado Appointed as New Public Works Director in City of King

City of King City Manager Steve Adams has announced the appointment of Octavio Hurtado to be the City’s new Director of Public Works.  Hurtado began work in the position this week on August 22.    Hurtado was appointed following a competitive recruitment process.  He is licensed engineer with over 32 years of engineering experience with the firm of Hanna-Brunetti.  He received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, and has worked under contract on a part-time basis as the City of King City Engineer since 2006.   Mr. Hurtado stated: “I am honored and excited to officially join the King City management team. I am looking forward to serving the community, focusing on improving the services we provide for our residents, businesses, and visitors, as well as working on upcoming projects that will benefit all members of the community.” The City has been without a full-time public works director for many years due to financial constraints. 

Monterey County Health Department to put on a Monkeypox Vaccination Clinic in Salinas on August 27

  The Monterey County Health Department will be holding a Monkeypox Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, August 27 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Breadbox Recreation Center in Salinas located at 745 North Sanborn Road. They'll only be providing first doses, while the Vaccine is free of charge regardless of insurance or immigration status. Patients under 18 years old must have a parent or guardian present. Southbound US 101 Ramps at Jolon Road in King City Now Closed

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Ongoing paving and bridge work on US 101 in King City will continue with the closure on Wednesday, August 24 of the of the southbound US 101 Jolon Rd. offramp and the southbound US 101 Jolon Rd. onramp. This closure will be in effect until the end of September.   Temporary concrete railing has been placed along the roadway to block the southbound Jolon Rd. onramp and southbound Jolon Rd offramp. Amazing White Lions on Photographic Display at the Paso Robles City Library; September’s Art in the Library Features Rare Wild Cats of Southern Africa

  PASO ROBLES, CA August 10, 2022 - On safari in southern Africa in July 2019, Cheryl Strahl and her husband, Richard, were privileged to see rare white lions in the Timbavati Game Reserve. They were told by their professional guides that only three white lions were known to exist in the wild—and they saw two of them, both cubs. Their photography exhibit, entitled "The White Lions & Other Cats of Southern Africa," includes poignant and captivating images of the white lion cubs as well as other amazing wild cats sighted in both South Africa and Botswana. A retired software engineer, Strahl is an “in-the-moment” photographer who finds inspiration in nature. “Both great lighting in beautiful scenery and encounters with amazing wildlife invoke an emotion in me that is so good for my soul. King City Golf Course Operator Selection Public Workshop

  The City of King City Council has scheduled a special public workshop at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 as part of the selection process for the new operator and manager of the King City Golf Course.  The City recently released a Request for Proposals for operation and management services for the King City Golf Course.  Two finalists have been selected who will present their proposals at the Special Meeting.  There will also be an opportunity for City Council questions, public input, and City Council deliberation and direction.  The agenda, staff report, full proposals, and cost projections can also be accessed on the City’s website at www.kingcity.com.   Questions can be directed to City Hall at 831-385-3281.

The Greenfield PD Looking Into Residential Burglaries that Happened on August 22

  The Greenfield Police Department is investigating 2 residential burglaries that were reported on Monday night, August 22. The first burglary was phoned in at 518 pm off of Oak Avenue, while the 2nd burglary was called in at 8:06 pm off 12th Street. 1 Vehicle Crash in Greenfield on August 23

  The CHP, Pine Canyon Firefighters along with Greenfield Professional Firefighters and Firefighters from CAL FIRE BEU responded to a solo vehicle accident on Highway 101 near the Teague Avenue exit in Greenfield at 4:50 am on Tuesday, August 23. No injuries were reported. The cause of the wreck is unknown. 

1 Vehicle Rollover Outside of King City on August 23

  1 vehicle overturned off of CRG 18 and Frudden Road between Lockwood and Bradley at 9:38 am on Tuesday, August 23. The vehicle landed on it's roof going 20 yards down the roadway hitting a barbed wire fence. Minor injuries from the accident were reported. The cause of the crash is unknown. 

City of Gonzales Special Election Early Voting Location

  Salinas, CA – The Early Voting Location at the Gonzales Council Chambers located at 117 Fourth Street in Gonzales will be available from 9 am to 4 pm on Friday, August 26 and Monday, August 29; and from 7 am to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 30. Independent Nonprofit Partnership for Children Receives $125,000 Grant from Hospice Giving Foundation

Brush Fire in the Salinas Riverbed Outside of King City Doused on August 19

  Pine Canyon Firefighters along with Firefighters with CAL FIRE BEU knocked down a vegetation fire in the Salinas Riverbed on Friday night, August 19. The blaze began at around 6:30 pm. The fire was contained to a 20 by 20 foot spot. No injuries were reported. 

Man in Greenfield Busted for Possession and Sales of Methamphetamine in Greenfield on August 21

  20-year-old Carlos Solano was detained off of Apple Avenue in Greenfield at 1:24 pm on Sunday, August 21 after it was found that he was in Possession of 14 Grams of Meth and Small Baggies. Solano was arrested for Possession and Sales of Methamphetamine.

  18-year-old Octavio Rodriquez was arrested for a Felony Warrant off of Larson Lane in Greenfield at 6:14 pm on Saturday night, August 20.  27-year-old Nayeli-Noyola Sanchez was taken into custody for Assault with a Deadly Weapon off of Apple Avenue in Greenfield at 10:04 pm on Saturday night, August 20. 

Paso Robles City Library to host special program on City’s exciting plan for airport’s future on September 1

  PASO ROBLES, CA –On Thursday, September 1, from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Library Conference Room, the Paso Robles City Library will host a joint presentation by Henry Danielson, CISSO Technology Advisor at Cal Poly’s Cybersecurity Institute (CCI), and Paul Sloan, Economic Development Manager for the City of Paso Robles, on CubeSats and the plan for a spaceport in Paso Robles. Danielson will focus on CubeSats and the role of the PolySat lab in their production and use. Sloan will focus on the city’s progress on applying to become a spaceport and what it means for the future of the airport and the City of Paso Robles.  For those who wish to see one of these satellites up close, a CubeSat will be on display in the Library the month of September. California Rodeo Salinas Gives Over $560,000 to Community Non-Profits

  SALINAS, CA, August 19, 2022 – The California Rodeo Salinas gave $563,258.29 back to community non-profit groups in 2022. Donations were earned by groups who performed jobs like parking, ushering, selling food and more during events. Discounted facility rentals, ticket donations and tips collected at various events held at the Salinas Sports Complex including Monster Jam, concerts, Big Week Bull Riding, and the California Rodeo Salinas are also included in the grand total. This number is up 5.3% over the 2019 donation, which was the most recent year the California Rodeo Association hosted a full roster of events. 2022 was very successful with Rodeo attendance being up 10% over 2019, including a sold-out Friday night performance. The only other performances that have sold out in the recent history of the California Rodeo were in 1996, 1991 and 1973. The Big Week Bull Riding also sold out on July 20th with over 10,000 people attending.   Higher attendance means more funds are generated

Road and Lane Closures in South Monterey County on Highway 101 for the Week of August 21

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, August 21 through Saturday, August 27.  Highway 101: Jolon Road (Bradley) – Alvarado/San Bernardo: August 22 – August 24 One lane closure will occur along northbound Highway 101 from Jolon Road in Bradley to Alvarado/San Bernardo for pavement repair work from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Highway 101: Alvarado/San Bernardo – Los Lobos Road: August 25 – August 26 One lane closure will occur along northbound Highway 101 from Alvarado/San Bernardo to Los Lobos Road for pavement repair work from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Highway 101: Teague Avenue – Jolon Road (Southbound): August 22 – August 26 One lane closure will occur along southbound Highway 101 between Teague Avenue and Jolon Road south for miscellaneous work along the highway from 7 am to 4 pm. Lonoak Road Closure in King City

  Union Pacific Railroad will be closing Lonoak Road at the railroad crossing at First Street for railroad repairs beginning at 6:00 a.m. on August 22, 2022 through August 27, 2022.  There will be no through traffic on a 24-hour basis for the duration of the closure.  All traffic must detour to the route provided.  Please refer to the attached Public Notice and Detour Map.  For more information, you may contact Roadsafe Traffic Systems at 775-356-0103.

Residential Structure Fire Extinguished in Greenfield on August 18

  On Thursday, August 18 at approximately 3:45 pm the Pine Canyon Firefighters and CAL FIRE BEU Soledad responded to assist Greenfield Professional Firefighters with a residential structure fire off of Primavera Court and 10th Street in Greenfield. The fire was contained to the structure of origin. No injuries were reported. 

Atascadero PD Looking for Suspect in Armed Robbery Incident at Home Depot on August 6

  On Saturday afternoon, August 6 a man displayed a firearm in an attempt to obtain money from a Home Depot Store in Atascadero. He fled the scene in a green Honda Accord. The man is described as  approximately 5’9” tall, wearing blue jeans, a grey colored gator covering his face, a tan colored hat, a black shirt with a star on the back and a grey colored long sleeve shirt underneath. CDCR Looking into Killing of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad

  The CDCR reports on Monday, August 8 that a prisoner at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad was killed by a fellow inmate. 30-year-old Angel Montes allegedly attacked 59-year-old Peter Hernandez in a housing unit dayroom with a weapon. Staff tried life-saving measures but Hernandez was pronounced dead shortly after the attack. No staff members or additional incarcerated people were injured as a result of this incident. Hernandez was sentenced on May 12 of 1997, from Santa Clara County to serve life with a parole sentence for second-degree robbery as a third-striker and petty theft with a prior as a third-striker, while Montes was sentenced on Sept. 29 of 2017 from Kings County to serve a life with parole sentence for the attempted murder of a government official with the use of a firearm.  

1 Vehicle Wreck in Greenfield on August 6

The Greenfield PD also reports that a 1 vehicle crash occurred off of Huerta Street at 11:02 am on Saturday, August 6. The driver involved in the wreck according to Greenfield Police inadvertently pressed the acceleration pedal instead of the break and the vehicle jumped a curve and collided with the pillar of a building. No injuries were reported.

  The Greenfield Police Department reports that a vehicle was vandalized on the 50 block of Birch Hill Way at 9:29 am on Saturday, August 6. If anyone has any information about this crime they're asked to call the Greenfield Police Department at (831) 674-5111.

Gang Member Found with Guns and Drugs in Chualar

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office reports that during the week of July 31 detectives with MADCAT & PCU followed up on information regarding criminal activity of 36-year-old Jorge Cisneros of Chualar who is a gang member and was wanted on charges stemming from a prior domestic violence case. Detectives located Cisneros on the 25000 block of Roosevelt Street in Chualar and he was detained next to his vehicle. During a search of Cisneros’ vehicle and residence, 3 firearms, methamphetamine, packaging material, scales and a large amount of cash were located. Cisneros is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms. Cisneros was arrested and booked into the Monterey County jail on various weapons and drug charges.

2 Men in Soledad Busted for Firearms Possession and Other Charges on August 5

  On Friday morning, August 5 Soledad officers were dispatched to 150 West Street, regarding an armed home invasion that occurred on the evening of August 4. The victims had reported that a male subject entered their home, pointed a firearm at them and demanded money. A struggle ensued for control of the firearm and during that time, the firearm discharged one round striking the ceiling.  The victims were ultimately able to disarm the suspect at which point the suspect threatened to kill the victims then fled the residence on foot. The victims were to fearful to report the incident. Through the SPD's investigation, the suspect was positively identified as 21-year-old Lazaro Ortega, a documented Norteno criminal street gang member.   While officers were actively investigating the case, County Communications advised that the suspect returned to the residence accompanied by three other males, and the suspect’s four-year-old daughter.
