The CDCR reports on Monday, August 8 that a prisoner at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad was killed by a fellow inmate. 30-year-old Angel Montes allegedly attacked 59-year-old Peter Hernandez in a housing unit dayroom with a weapon. Staff tried life-saving measures but Hernandez was pronounced dead shortly after the attack. No staff members or additional incarcerated people were injured as a result of this incident. Hernandez was sentenced on May 12 of 1997, from Santa Clara County to serve life with a parole sentence for second-degree robbery as a third-striker and petty theft with a prior as a third-striker, while Montes was sentenced on Sept. 29 of 2017 from Kings County to serve a life with parole sentence for the attempted murder of a government official with the use of a firearm.
