3 Adults Busted Between Soledad and Greenfield for Child Endangerment, Weapons, and Narcotics violations on May 31

  On Tuesday, May 31 at 2:00 PM, a South Monterey County Task Force Detective spotted a known parolee in a vehicle driving in a known gang area. The parolee observed the detective, then fled at a high rate of speed down Metz Road, with the detective following and calling for backup units. Additional Task Force members, Soledad Police Officers, and Greenfield Police officers responded to the area to assist. The suspected vehicle finally stopped on Metz Road between Soledad and Greenfield. Officers then conducted a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle, where they found 3 adults, 3 toddlers, and a 10 day-old baby.  The driver, Gabriel Quezada, was found with a firearm in his waistband, while Jenise Hernandez-Tejada and Raymundo Rodriguez were also removed from the vehicle. Woman Found Guilty of Driving Under the Influence of a Drug in South Monterey County

  SALINAS, California—Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on May 31, 2022 that on May 25, 2022, a jury convicted 35-year-old Rebecca Nicole Stein of Orange County of driving under the influence of a drug. After the verdict, Stein admitted that she has a prior DUI conviction from 2021. The Honorable Jared A. Jefferson sentenced her to 90 days in jail and placed her on informal probation for 5-years. During the period of probation, she must complete an 18-month multiple offender treatment program, install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle she owns or operates for one year, obey all laws, and she must not use or possess alcohol or drugs. On October 1, 2021, at 7:10 am, officers from the Camp Roberts Military base called dispatch because a suspect was blocking a military facility area gate on Corps Road, just south of Bradley Road, in South Monterey County. Man in Gonzales Taken into Custody for Reckless Driving and Illegal Weapons Charges on May 29

  On Sunday, May 29 at 3:56 pm Gonzales Police Officers were Dispatched to the 200 Block of First Street for a report of a vehicle driving recklessly. Upon arrival, an Officer contacted the Owner of the vehicle Dominic Torres and he actively resisted Officers when they attempted to detain him. Torres was found to be in Possession of an Illegally Possessed Loaded Firearm. Torres was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.

Greenfield Public Works Department Prioritizes Graffiti Clean-Up at the Greenfield Post Office.

The Post Office in Greenfield was tagged during the Memorial day weekend twice and the Greenfield Public Works crew was able to clean up the graffiti tagging on Tuesday morning, May 31. City of Greenfield Officials say that if you see a Public Works crew member out on the streets, in the parks, or anywhere, please tell them how much you appreciate them. 

Vegetation Fire Outside of King City Knocked Down on May 30

On Monday, May 30 at approximately 3:20 pm Pine Canyon Firefighters along with CAL FIRE BEU responded to a vegetation fire in the creek bed on Pine Canyon Road outside of King City. The blaze was contained to less than 1/4 of an acre. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Upcoming Volunteer Event on June 4 at Pinnacles National Park is Open to the Public!

  Saturday, June 4 is National Trails Day and Pinnacles National Park will be having a trail work service project on the WEST side of the park at 9am! National Trails Day is a day to appreciate and enjoy the pathways we follow in accessing public lands, and showing our appreciation by volunteering to help maintain them. Park Officials will be cleaning up and trimming back vegetation from the trails, beginning at the WEST Visitor Contact Station at 9am. The project is expected to last up to 2 hours, and project participants are granted free entry for the day. Interested participants should make sure to arrive BEFORE 9am, bring a water bottle, snack foods, good shoes and clothes for working outside, and sun protection; Work gloves and tools will be provided. The number of participants is limited! Reservations are not required, but you can reserve a spot by emailing pinn_volunteer@nps.gov before the day of the event or call 831- 389-4485 .

  MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, May 29 through Saturday, June 4.  Highway 101: First Street: Long-Term There will be full closure of the off ramp of southbound Highway 101 at First Street for pavement work. Highway 101: Canal Street: Long - Term There will be full closure of the on ramp of southbound Highway 101 at Canal Street for pavement work. 3.2 Magnitude Earthquake in South Monterey County on May 27

  According to the US Geologinal Survey, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake hit south Monterey County Friday sometime between 5:30 pm and 6 pm. The epicenter is believed to be near east of Peachtree Valley, east of San Lucas. No damage was reported. 

Man Caught and Detained After Vehicle Chase in Soledad on May 27

  On Friday, May 27 a wanted man in a stolen vehicle decided he wanted to take a break in Soledad and a Police Detective in Soledad observed the vehicle which was a grey Volkswagon Sedan with no license plates while in the parking lot of a McDonald's Restaurant. Once the man saw the Detective, he decided to flee. Officers pursued the suspected vehicle onto Highway 101 Southbound and the suspect passed the Arroyo Seco exit and crashed into another vehicle on the highway. One unit stayed with the crash, and the second unit continued chasing the suspected vehicle which sustained major damage. The suspected vehicle was unable to continue and and became disabled on Major Farms near Viva Road due to the damage. More Soledad Officers arrived on the scene, joined by Greenfield Police Officers, Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies, and CHP Officers.   The Gonzales Police Department is investigating a theft of a catalytic converter worth $1000 that was swiped from a vehicle off of the 200 block of Angus Drive at 4:16 am on Monday morning, May 23. Atascadero High School Put on Lockdown on May 26 Due to Concerning Social Media Post

  On Wednesday, May 25 at 9:00 PM, the Atascadero Police Department (APD) learned of a concerning social media posting made by a student from Atascadero High School (AHS). The student had posted a video on Snap Chat, a social media platform, racking a shot gun. Through the Atascadero PD's investigation they determined that the subject lived in a rural County and outside the City of Atascadero.  The SLO County Sheriff’s department was contacted and requested to make contact with the juvenile and his parents.  Sheriff’s Deputies made contact with the juvenile and a parent. They confirmed the weapon was secure and no longer accessible by the juvenile.  Prior to the school opening on Thursday morning, May 26 the APD notified the Atascadero Unified School District (AUSD), who was also receiving information by several people about the social media activity. Greenfield PD Investigating Stabbing of a Juvenile on May 26

  On Thursday, May 26 at about 4:30 P.M., Greenfield Police Officers responded to a call for service in the area of Parkside Park for a report of a stabbing incident. When officers arrived, they contacted a juvenile male with a stab wound.  Officers learned the stabbing occurred about an hour earlier in the area of 9th Street and Palm Avenue during a fight between a group of juveniles.    As a precaution, the juvenile was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital.  This investigation is ongoing. Deadline Approaching for California Mid-State Fair Junior Fairboard; Applications are available online and are due June 10

  (PASO ROBLES, CA) – The deadline to apply for the 2022 Junior Fair Board is Friday, June 10, 2022. Applications can be filled out and submitted online at www.MidStateFair.com. The California Mid-State Fair Junior Fair Board consists of people between 16 and 25 years of age living in San Luis Obispo County. Junior Fair Board members assist with the day- to-day operations of the annual California Mid-State Fair, including events such as the Diaper Derby and Tricycle Races. In addition, members help in the livestock area during weigh in and auction day, act as ushers in the Main Grandstand and obtain market research from fairgoers. Members can serve until their 25th birthday. The California Mid-State Fair Junior Fair Board is a volunteer position that serves at the direction of the Board of Director’s Junior Fair Board Committee. Fatality Announced in King Fire that Broke Out in the Salinas Riverbed Outside of King City on May 25; Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is Seeking Help from the Public

 The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that 1 person has been found dead in the area burned by the King Fire. There are no additional details available at this time. The remains have been turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division and the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are seeking help from the public and are asking anyone who may have been in or around the fire area late Wednesday afternoon, May 25 to contact the one of two tips lines to share any information about what they may have seen prior to the fire starting. The fire area is in the riverbed behind McDonalds and KFC on Broadway Circle in King City. CHP-Monterey to Conduct Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint

The Monterey Area Office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be conducting a sobriety/driver license checkpoint on Friday, May 27, 2022, somewhere within the unincorporated area of Monterey County.   In 2021, the Monterey Area Office of the California Highway Patrol investigated 30 fatal crashes which resulted in the loss of 33 lives. Of these crashes, 8 were caused by someone driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.     DUI crashes and arrests are preventable.  Despite ongoing enforcement and education efforts, our communities continue to be impacted by the actions of impaired drivers.  The CHP encourages everyone to always designate a sober driver, utilize public transportation, a taxi or a rideshare company if you choose to consume alcohol or become impaired by any means.  You can be arrested for DUI cannabis (including edibles, concentrates, and other products), prescription drugs, illegal drugs, and even over-the-counter drugs if they impair your ability to saf

3 Vehicle Hit and Run Collision on Highway 101 Outside of Chualar on May 24

A 3 vehicle hit and run accident happened on Highway 101 Southbound near the Esperanza Road just north of Chualar at 4:22 pm on Tuesday, May 24. No injuries were reported. The cause of the wreck is unknown. 

Hartnell College Awards Record Number of Degrees and Certificates on May 20

  Hartnell College celebrated a joyous in-person Commencement on May 20 at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas for the first time since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 700 graduates participated, the most in recent memory, and the college awarded a record number of credentials -- 1,241 associate degrees and 1,006 certificates of achievement. River Road Emergency Repair at Fairview Road Project to Begin on June 1; Community Meeting planned for May 26

  Repair and construction work to replace a culvert underneath River Road damaged during the 2021 Winter Storms in the Soledad area will begin on June 1, 2022. Construction and message signs will be placed along River Road leading up to Fairview Road in anticipation of construction activities. The project is expected to take approximately 145 days to complete. While the majority of the work will be done outside of the roadway, delays and temporary traffic control are expected during the day, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Construction activities will include excavation, grading, pipe installation, rip-rap installation, paving, curb installation, signing and striping. Certain phases of the work will require temporary closure of River Road to install the culvert under the existing roadway. Mee Memorial Promotes Strong Leader from within to Replace Retiring Chief Nursing Officer Elisa Moylan

  KING CITY, Calif., — Mee Memorial Hospital in King City has promoted Kirsten Featherstone to Chief Nursing Officer, replacing current CNO Elisa Moylan following her retirement effective June 26, 2022. Requiring strong leadership and communication skills, the Chief Nursing Officer fulfills a wide variety of regulatory duties beyond connecting patients with the care they need. Featherstone will help set patient care standards, establish processes and protocols for achieving those standards, and manage the work of nurses and other clinical practitioners. 18-year-old in Soledad Dies from Fenanyl Overdose on May 21

  On Saturday, May 21 at 6:45 am, Soledad Police Officers responded to a medical emergency at a residence within the city of Soledad that had to do with a narcotic overdose involving a High School student who turned 18 this year and was set to graduate in June. The victim ingested a counterfeit pill that contained fentanyl which caused an immediate medical reaction resulting in death of the victim. Investigators on the scene came across several more counterfeit pills that tested positive for fentanyl. The South Monterey County Task Force which consists of the Soledad Police Department, the Greenfield Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security Investigations is looking into this young adult's death which is being investigated as a homicide. Atascadero PD is Investigating Vandalism of ALF Food Pantry on May 16

  On Monday morning, May 16 at 3:07 AM an unidentified man vandalized the ALF Food Pantry in Atascadero shattering a glass lobby door in the business. He was recorded by outside video cameras as he was attempting to force the door open in the alleyway and try to break into the pantry van. He did approximately $1,500 damage while on the property until 5 AM.  If anyone has any information about this incident, they're asked to call the Atascadero Police Department at  805-461-5051.

2022 Hartnell College Graduate Mother of 4 Pursues ‘Dream’ of Becoming a Doctor

Asmahan Muhrram is a mother of 4 who says her goal of becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist is a “child’s dream,” not because it’s out of reach but because it was instilled by her late father in their native Yemen. “I used to dream to become a doctor back in my country,” said Muhrram, who will graduate from Hartnell on May 20 with an Associate Degree for Transfer in Biology – Summa Cum Laude – and continue on to Cal State Monterey Bay. “Before my dad passed away, he was my main supporter. He said, ‘Follow your dream.’” Not only is she a first-generation student, like many of her younger peers at Hartnell, but she has traveled an especially long road, starting with earning her high school equivalency online in about 2007. SPCA Wildlife Center Rescuing Pelicans

  The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is rescuing pelicans in distress across our county, from Big Sur to Monterey and even as far inland as Greenfield. The pelicans are all thin to emaciated and unable to fly.  We currently have eleven surviving pelicans in our care, with many more calls coming in. Hartnell College Graduates to Receive 2,287 Credentials on May 20

  More than 700 graduates from Summer 2021 through Spring 2022 have signed up to participate in Hartnell College's Commencement at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at Rabobank Stadium, 1034 N. Main St. in Salinas. This is Hartnell's first in-person ceremony since 2019, when about 650 took part. San Lucas Man Dies in 1 Vehicle Rollover on Cattleman Road Outside of King City on May 18

  A fatal 1 vehicle accident happened off of Cattleman Road and South of Wildhorse Road outside of King City at 1:57 pm on Wednesday, May 18. According to the King City CHP, 28-year-old Christian Morales of San Lucas was driving southbound on Cattleman Road in a 2002 Chevy Tahoe south of Wildhorse Road at an unknown rate of speed. Morales allowed his vehicle to drift off to the right side of the roadway and his vehicle veered to the left after driving onto the right dirt shoulderand across the northbound lane. The vehicle continued on the eastbound shoulder where it began to roll. Morales was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from his vehicle and succumbed to his injuries. A man wanted in Soledad was busted by law enforcement after a high speed pursuit on May 18

  On Wednesday, May 18 at 12:30 PM, 2 Soledad Police detectives observed Hector Guerrero, a parolee at large, who also had a felony warrant. Guerrero was able to evade the detectives, but not before they could get his vehicle description out to the surrounding agencies. Several minutes later, Officers with the Gonzales Police Department spotted Guerrero entering their city, and a pursuit ensued. Guerrero fled through the city of Gonzales, but could not evade the Gonzales Police Officers. He then went southbound on Highway 101, where the Gonzales PD was joined by Soledad Police Officers, Greenfield Police Officers, and members of the South County Joint Task Force.  Guerrero then entered the city of Soledad and was pursued up to Gabilan Drive, where he crashed into a parked vehicle and fled on foot. Man Found Guilty of Starting the Dolan Fire in Big Sur in August of 2020 Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Wednesday, May 18 that the Honorable Pamela L. Butler sentenced 31-year-old Ivan Gomez to 24 years in state prison. Gomez had previously been found guilty of the arson known as the Big Sur Dolan fire, which seriously injured a firefighter and destroyed multiple residences. He was also found guilty of the arson of the Los Padres National Forest, throwing rocks at a vehicle, cultivating marijuana, and 12 counts of cruelty to animals for killing multiple condors that perished in the fire. In total, he was found guilty of 16 felony counts. Judge Butler sentenced him to the upper term of 9 years for the arson causing serious injury to a firefighter and an additional 5-year enhancement for destroying 14 structures, including residences. House Fire Extinguished in Templeton on May 18

  A house fire flared up on Sunnyside Way in Templeton at 5:34 am on Wednesday, May 18. Firefighters with CAL FIRE SLO and the Templeton Fire Department responded to the scene to control the blaze in over 40 minutes. The fire began in the front living room of the home before it started burning into other rooms. Fire crews say the damage from both the fire and smoke is extensive throughout the house. 3 of the 5 residents that included 2 adults along with 1 child were in the house when the fire broke out. They were able to evacuate the home immediately without any injuries, while 3 dogs and 4 cats also lived in the home. All of the pets except for 1 cat tragically died in the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

2 Vehicle Hit and Run Crash Outside of Soledad on May 17

  A 2 vehicle hit and run accident happened off of Echo Valley Road outside of Soledad at 4:20 pm on Tuesday, May 17. Injuries from the crash were reported. The cause of the wreck is unknown. 

Power Outage in Greenfield on May 16

  A power outage was reported in Greenfield at 7:36 pm on Monday night, May 16 due to a flyaway metallic balloon that made contact with power lines on Oak Avenue. The metallic balloon caused a downed power line and resulted in electricity going out in that area impacting more than 2,400 customers. PG&E crews worked with first responders to make the area safe and worked on repairs throughout the night. Power to customers was fully restored by 11:48 p.m. PG&E states that this incident is a great reminder to never release metallic balloons outdoors because of how they have the potential to contact power lines and cause outages. Every year, especially during graduation season, hundreds of metallic balloons make contact with electric equipment because due to how they’re released outdoors. PG&E reminds residents to always tie balloons to a weight and puncture before disposing. 

2022 Home Winemaking Competition Results at the California Mid-State Fair; Santa Ynez Man Takes Best of Show

  (PASO ROBLES, CA) – The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Home Wine Competition. Central Coast home winemakers alike were represented by a solid number of total entries and gold medals awarded. “This year’s home winemaking competition was an amazing success, of the 162 entries, there were 42 gold medals, that's over 25%, which is the most in the history of the competition,” stated chief judge Mike Jones.
