The Monterey Area Office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be conducting a sobriety/driver license checkpoint on Friday, May 27, 2022, somewhere within the unincorporated area of Monterey County.
In 2021, the Monterey Area Office of the California Highway Patrol investigated 30 fatal crashes which resulted in the loss of 33 lives. Of these crashes, 8 were caused by someone driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
DUI crashes and arrests are preventable. Despite ongoing enforcement and education efforts, our communities continue to be impacted by the actions of impaired drivers. The CHP encourages everyone to always designate a sober driver, utilize public transportation, a taxi or a rideshare company if you choose to consume alcohol or become impaired by any means. You can be arrested for DUI cannabis (including edibles, concentrates, and other products), prescription drugs, illegal drugs, and even over-the-counter drugs if they impair your ability to safely operate a vehicle. The sobriety/driver license checkpoint is another mechanism which will assist in removing suspected impaired drivers from the roadway and provide additional education and awareness to the motoring public regarding the dangers of impaired driving. One of the primary goals of the CHP is to ensure the roadways throughout the State of California are the safest of which to travel and this checkpoint is an effective tool to assist in achieving this goal. Publicizing our efforts will hopefully serve as a deterrent for motorists who may otherwise choose to drive impaired. The CHP continues to express the public safety message of “Don’t Drive Impaired.”
NOTE: The check point will be operated from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM (May 27, 2022).
