SPCA of Monterey County Provides Halloween Safety Tips for Pet Owners

SPCA Monterey County urges pet owners to take some simple precautions to safeguard their pets this Halloween:     Pets should be kept indoors and preferably confined to an area of the home where they cannot escape.  Multiple strangers in costume at your door can be very stressful for your pet.  Pets might slip out the front door unexpectedly or become frightened and bite.     Pets should always have a current license, ID tag, and microchip so they can be returned in the event they escape from your home.     If you plan to dress your pet up for Halloween, practice first to get your pet used to the costume. Some pets simply don’t like costumes, so don’t force it. Make sure it’s easy to take off if your pet becomes scared and has breakaway parts (like velcro). Always keep your pet under your control when he is in costume.     Do not use the stretchy cotton or polyester spiderweb decoration outside, as they trap hummingbirds, bats, raptors, and small songbirds, causing injury or death, a

Monterey County Health Officials Recommend that Vulnerable Infants, Pregnant Persons, and Older Adults Get Immunized Against RSV Now to Protect Against Severe Illness this Fall and Winter

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common respiratory virus that often causes colds but can be severe for infants and older adults. RSV can spread at the same time as COVID-19 and influenza (flu), usually between October and March. In 2022 there was an unusually early and severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season. This fall, the recent increase in RSV activity in the Southeastern U.S. likely indicates that a rise in RSV cases in the Western U.S. will soon follow.    RSV spreads through the air when someone with the virus sneezes or coughs and by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face without first washing your hands. Symptoms of RSV usually include fever, cough, runny nose, and wheezing. In very young infants, babies may be unusually fussy and have difficulty breathing. SPCA: Hot Weather Advisory for Pets

Temperatures in Monterey County are expected to be very hot on October 5 and through the next few days.  SPCA Monterey County advises pet owners that high temperatures can be dangerous for pets, especially since our pets are not acclimated to this sudden weather change.   Pets should be kept indoors or be provided with ample shaded areas.  Fresh water must be available at all times.    Children and pets should not be left unattended in enclosed vehicles.  On a warm day, a parked car’s interior can reach over 120 degrees in less than five minutes, even with the windows partially open, causing brain damage or death.   It is important to keep in mind that conditions in our area change constantly. A shady spot on a foggy day can quickly transition to direct, hot sunlight.  California Penal Code section 597.7 prohibits leaving an animal in an unattended motor vehicle under “circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or death to the animal.”  If you see
