Monterey Traffic Alliance Safety Corridors; The California Highway Patrol implements a regional effort to reduce speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors

MONTEREY, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Monterey Area office will use grant funding aimed at reducing traffic crashes involving unsafe speed, improper turning, and wrong side of road violations in Monterey County.  This one-year project starts on October 1, 2023, and ends on September 30, 2024.

The CHP Monterey Area will deploy officers as part of an enhanced enforcement effort on Unites States 101; and State Routes 1, 68, 156 and 183; and unincorporated roadways of Monterey County where the CHP Monterey Area has jurisdiction.  In addition to the enforcement effort, this grant also includes a community-based task force, and a public awareness and education campaign.  The public education campaign is designed to reinforce the importance of slowing down, making safe turns, and passing where lawful and in a safe manner on two lane highways.

“Our public education campaign is to reduce the number of victims killed and injured in motor vehicle crashes attributed to unsafe speed, improper turning, and wrong side of road violations,” said CHP Captain Ian Troxell, Commander of the Monterey Area office.  “This grant will allow us to provide additional enforcement and raise awareness about important traffic safety issues.”

According to the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, there were 13 people killed and 615 people injured in traffic crashes attributed to unsafe speed, improper turning, and wrong side of road violations on state highways and unincorporated roadways patrolled by the CHP Monterey Area between October 1, 2020, and September 30, 2021.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
