CHP Will Have New Year's Maximum Enforcement Period from December 29 Until January 1

  The California Highway Patrol in King City and all over the state is urging motorists to drive safely heading into 2024 as they are ramping up efforts to ensure safety by launching a Maximum Enforcement Period which will begin at 6:01 p.m. on Friday night, December 29 and continue until 11:59 p.m. on Monday night, January 1. The CHP reports that 20 people were killed in crashes within the agency’s jurisdiction from December 22-25, 2023. CHP officers made more than 900 arrests for driving under the influence during that period, an average of one every 5 minutes. Besides assisting drivers and looking for traffic violations such as failure to wear a seat belt, speeding and distracted driving, CHP officers will be paying close attention to people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.   MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, December 31 through Saturday, January 6.  Salinas – Spreckels: Harkins Road & Hunter Lane:  Long - Term There will be temporary lane closures and one lane reversible traffic controls along Harkins Road and Hunter lane for pavement work beginning Monday, October 16, 2023. The work hours are 7:00 am to 5:00 p.m., with occasional nighttime work. The Harkins Road work will be located from the City of Salinas limits to Fifth Street in Spreckels. The Hunter Lane work will be taking place from State Route 68 to Harkins Road.  Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

King City City Hall Holiday Closures

17-year-old Juvenile Taken Into Custody in Greenfield in Connection with Stabbing Incident that Killed 1 Person on December 18

  On Wednesday morning, December 20 the Greenfield Police Department, with assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, served a residential search warrant on the 200 block of Apple Avenue, in connection with a stabbing homicide that took place on the 200 block of Chardonnay Drive during the overnight hours of Tuesday, December 19. As a result, a 17-year-old juvenile was arrested and is facing charges of assault, conspiracy, and accessory to murder. The Juvenile was transported to Monterey County Juvenile Hall. This is the 2nd person person arrested pertaining to this incident. 18-year-old Julian Nunez-Gomez turned himself into Greenfield Police on December 19 and has been charged with murder. The Greenfield PD that the stabbing apprears to be gang related and confirms that at this time there are no other outstanding individuals related to this investigation.

  According to the Greenfield Police Department a stabbing incident occurred on the 200 block of Chardonnay Drive, which tragically resulted in a homicide on Monday night, December 18. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department Corners Unit will be responsible for the release of the victim’s identity in due time. Greenfield Police detectives were dispatched and is currently conducting an investigation into this incident. 18-year-old Julian Nunez-Gomez has been identified as a suspect in this case. On Tuesday afternoon, December 19  Julian Nunez-Gomez turned himself into the Greenfield Police Department and was booked into the Monterey County Jail for 187(a) PC - Homicide.  There was also an active warrant issued for the arrest of Nunez-Gomez before he turned himself in. Salinas Valley State Prison Officials in Soledad are Investigating the Death of Inmate on December 14 as a Homicide

  California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating the Dec. 14, 2023, death of an incarcerated person at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad as a homicide. At approximately 8:40 a.m., officers witnessed 2 incarcerated people identified as 39-year-old David Pacheco and 23-year-old Adrian Lopez, allegedly attack a third incarcerated person identified as 30-year-old Oracio Ramirez in a recreational yard at the facility. Staff immediately responded, issuing verbal orders to stop and used one less-than-lethal 40mm direct impact round to quell the attack. An ambulance was summoned while staff performed life-saving measures on Ramirez, but Ramirez was pronounced dead at 9:02 a.m. An inmate manufactured weapon was recovered at the scene.  Pacheco and Lopez were placed in restricted housing.  An investigation continues by SVSP’s Investigative Services Unit and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.  The Office of the Inspector General

King City Police Department is Holding DUI Checkpoint December 28

King City, Calif. – The King City Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint on Thursday night, December 28 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at an undisclosed location within the City of King. DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road. “Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,”  said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”  reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Greenfield Man Sentenced in DUI Collision

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on December 11 that 23-year-old Daniel Dejesus Garcia of Greenfield, was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for a March 24, 2023 collision where Garcia pled guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol with a prior felony driving under the influence conviction. On March 24, 2023, Garcia was driving while intoxicated and hit a parked vehicle resulting in no injuries but causing damage to the vehicle. Garcia attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by law enforcement. A chemical test revealed that Garcia had a blood alcohol concentration of between .25 to .27. At the time of the collision, Garcia was on probation for a prior felony driving under the influence offense. Rehabilitated Raptor Release on December 12 at SPCA Monterey County… …with a Twist

  On Tuesday, December 12, at 11:00 am, SPCA Monterey County will “release” a rehabilitated raptor on their campus. But this raptor is a little different than the hundreds of hawks, owls, and eagles they rescue every year.  This raptor is a rehabilitated weathervane. The SPCA’s Claire R. Jacobsen Learning Center is undergoing a major renovation. When the construction team removed the old roof on the Learning Center, they found the SPCA’s 1970s era weathervane - a raptor - that was in very bad shape, missing one wing and both of its feet. In the spirit of the thousands of wildlife the SPCA rehabilitates each year, they decided to rehabilitate him, too.  The SPCA worked with a local metal artist, Eric Johnson of Pacific Metalcraft, to make him a new wing and get him ready to be reinstalled on our roof.  “It was quite a challenge to repair,” says Eric. “But I enjoyed working on it and am happy with the result. National Wreaths Across America Day to be Held at King City Cemetery on December 16

  King City Cemetery, an official Wreaths Across America location will host a wreath-laying ceremony on Saturday, December 16 at 10am, joining more than 3,500 other locations across the Country for National Wreaths Across America Day. Coordinated and led by local volunteers and fundraising groups,volunteers will place wreaths on veterans graves at King City Cemetery. This annual event seeks to further the Wreaths Across America mission of Remember, Honor and Teach, ensuring that the memory of those who served our Country endures. Students from the Soledad, Greenfield and King City High School ROTC programs as well as the military from Fort Hunter Liggett will be participating in the ceremony.  Everyone is welcome to attend. Rep. Lofgren Announces $1M+ in Federal Funding to Make Roads Safer in Hollister

  WASHINGTON, DC – On Friday, December 8 District 18 U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) will distribute $1,080,000 to the City of Hollister to develop and implement a comprehensive roadway safety action plan.   “Whether driving, biking, or walking to jobs, schools, stores, farms, or Pinnacles National Park, individuals and families in Hollister need to know their roads are safe. This more-than-a-million-dollar federal investment will importantly allow the city to develop and advance safety plans.   A 3 vehicle crash ocurred on Highway 101 Southbound near the Front Street exit in Soledad at 4:01 pm on Thursday afternoon, December 7. Minor injuries were reported as a result of the collision. 

King City Man Arrested on December 7 for Attempted Murder Shooting in November

  On Sunday, November 26, 2023 the King City Police Department responded to the 200 block of Sussex Way in King City, CA for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who sustained a gunshot wound. Through a follow-up investigation, Adrian Hernandez was identified as the person responsible for the shooting. On Thursday, December 7 the King City Police Department, with the assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the Monterey County Probation Department, and the Greenfield Police Department served a search warrant at Hernandez’s residence. Hernandez was located at the residence. was taken into custody without incident and was booked into the Monterey County Jail for attempted murder. The investigation is on-going. Monterey County District Attorney's Office Receives Kaiser Foundation Hospital Grant for Family Justice Center

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on December 4 that the Monterey County Family Justice Center was the recipient of the Kaiser Foundation Hospital Fund for Community Benefit Programs - Gun Violence Prevention Grant.   King City, Calif. – The holiday season can be a dangerous time for people on the roads. In December 2021 alone, 1,013 people were killed in the U.S. in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  King City Police Department wants to remind the public of the dangers of driving impaired and celebrate the holiday season responsibly by not driving under the influence. The Los Vaqueros Hunting Club Traveling Band to Perform at SMCRWF Meeting and Luncheon in King City on December 5!

  Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated will be holding its monthly luncheon meeting on Tuesday, December 5 at 11:30 a.m. at King Kora Restaurant located at 611 Canal Street in King City.  The club will be celebrating the Christmas Holidays with the Los Vaqueros Hunting Club Traveling Band playing for the group. Reps. Lofgren, Panetta Announce $640K in Federal Funding to Make Roads Safer in Monterey County

  WASHINGTON, DC – On Friday, December 1 U.S. Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) and Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) will distribute $640,000 to the Transportation Agency for Monterey County to develop and implement a comprehensive roadway safety action plan.   “Mobility is key to our local economy and ensures people can safely access jobs, schools, stores, and more. We’re glad to announce federal funding for Monterey County to develop and advance plans that will help make roads safer for everyone,” said Reps. Lofgren and Panetta.   This funding is part of the DOT’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, which supports the planning and implementation of comprehensive safety action plans to address roadway safety issues.   The DOT funding was provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Reps. Lofgren and Panetta voted in favor of.
