The California Highway Patrol in King City and all over the state is urging motorists to drive safely heading into 2024 as they are ramping up efforts to ensure safety by launching a Maximum Enforcement Period which will begin at 6:01 p.m. on Friday night, December 29 and continue until 11:59 p.m. on Monday night, January 1. The CHP reports that 20 people were killed in crashes within the agency’s jurisdiction from December 22-25, 2023. CHP officers made more than 900 arrests for driving under the influence during that period, an average of one every 5 minutes. Besides assisting drivers and looking for traffic violations such as failure to wear a seat belt, speeding and distracted driving, CHP officers will be paying close attention to people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
