SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on July 27
that Daniel Wetle, age 40, of Marina, was sentenced to 8 years and 8 months in
state prison for causing the DUI crash that killed victim Wsvaldo Perez Vasquez, 48, and seriously
injured Vasquez’s wife.
On August 13, 2022, just after 6:00 p.m., Daniel Wetle was driving a rented BMW sedan
westbound on Highway 68 near Spreckles when, due to his level of intoxication, he lost control of
the vehicle and swerved into oncoming traffic. Wetle hit victim Vasquez’s eastbound Toyota Camry
head on, killing Vasquez instantly and causing serious injuries to his wife.
California Highway Patrol officers contacted Wetle trapped in the driver’s seat of his vehicle
shortly after the crash. Wetle was uninjured and exhibited signs of being under the influence of
alcohol. A subsequent blood test showed that Wetle had a blood alcohol level of .101.
The case was investigated by the California Highway Patrol and prosecuted by the Monterey
County District Attorney’s Office specialized DUI Vertical Prosecution Unit. Funding for this
program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
