SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is continuing to rescue pelicans in distress.
The SPCA Wildlife Center has rescued 52 pelicans since April 19, including 12 from another wildlife rescue that asked for assistance.
The pelicans are all thin or emaciated with poor blood values. They are unable to fly and in need of immediate rescue.
The SPCA Wildlife Center is stabilizing the rescued pelicans, most of which are in serious to critical condition. The pelicans eat 25 to 50 pounds of fish per day.
Monetary donations are greatly appreciated to help the nonprofit SPCA Monterey County purchase the food and supplies needed for the pelicans and all their wild patients. Donations can be made online at www.spcamc.org/donate.
The pelicans are often being found in unusual places across Monterey County, including on Alvarado Street and Camino Aguajito in Monterey, in the middle of Carmel Valley Road, in Point Lobos, at the Monterey Coast Guard Pier, on Cannery Row, in Moss Landing, and in a backyard in Carmel. Most of the pelicans are currently being rescued from Fisherman’s Wharf.
A similar rescue happened previously in May, 2022.
If you see a pelican or any other animal in distress, please contact us. The SPCA Wildlife Center is here to help, thanks to your support.

The SPCA Wildlife Center is the only full-service wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Monterey County, rescuing over 2,500 injured, sick, and orphaned wild animals every year.
Everything they do for rescued wild animals is only made possible by your compassionate support.
The SPCA Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is the only full service wildlife rehabilitation center serving Monterey County. We operate under permits from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Your support is extremely important to us, as we do not receive funding from any federal, state or local government agency. Each year, The SPCA Wildlife Center admits over 2,500 animals for treatment and care.
SPCA Monterey County is your nonprofit, independent, donor-supported humane society that has been serving the animals and people of Monterey County since 1905. The SPCA is not a chapter of any other agency and does not have a parent organization. They shelter homeless, neglected and abused pets and livestock, and provide humane education and countless other services to the community. They are the local agency you call to investigate animal cruelty, rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife, and aid domestic animals in distress.
