Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Ends in Arrest in South Monterey County on September 19

Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies were alerted at 5:21 pm on Saturday, September 19 to a stolen white Volkswagen hatchback, which had been reported stolen earlier that day from the Capitola Police Department.

“We’re thankful this ended safely. Our deputies, CHP ground units, and the crew of CHP Helicopter H70

all worked together to bring this pursuit to a safe conclusion,” Sheriff Tina Nieto said.

Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology provided deputies with the vehicle’s initial location

and subsequent updated location notifications as it traveled through South Monterey County. A short

time later, deputies saw the Volkswagen traveling southbound on Highway 101 near the First Street overpass in King City.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield, prompting an 18-mile pursuit with

speeds ranging from 50 to 60 mph. The California Highway Patrol was requested to assist; CHP

Helicopter H70 responded overhead to provide aerial support and assist with coordination throughout the

pursuit. CHP Ground units attempted to deploy spike strips near San Ardo. The initial deployment was

unsuccessful after the driver tailgated a tractor-trailer.

The driver later exited Highway 101 onto Cattlemen Road and then entered the northbound Highway 101

on ramp. During the pursuit, a deputy attempted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver.

Contact was made with the suspect vehicle, but the maneuver did not stop it. The pursuit continued

northbound on Highway 101, where CHP officers successfully deployed spike strips, deflating both the

front and rear driver-side tires. The vehicle continued for a short distance before slowing and pulling to the right side of the roadway.

Deputies and CHP officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop and took the driver, identified as 54-year-old Funda Yilmaz, into custody without further incident. No deputies, CHP Officers, members of the public, or the suspect were injured during the incident.

Yilmaz was transported to the Monterey County Jail and booked on the following charges:

Fatal 3 Vehicle Accident Involving Wrong Way Driver on Highway 101 Outside of King City on January 10

A fatal multi-vehicle collision happened on Saturday night, January 10 at 9:51 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 outside of King City. According to the King City CHP a 2016 Toyota Tacoma driven by 65-year-old Paul Lee Cooper of Otis, Oregon was heading the wrong way going southbound in the northbound lanes south of Jolon Road, while a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by 33-year-old Dinora Maribel Gomez of Salinas was heading northbound on Highway 101 south of Jolon Road in the #1 lane and a Honda Accord driven by 36-year-old Ignacio Sangerman of King City was also traveling northbound on Highway 101 south of Jolon Road but was in the #2 lane. Due to Cooper's level of impairment his vehicle went the wrong way on Highway 101 going directly into the path of Gomez' vehicle causing the rear of her car to crash with the front of the vehicle driven by Sangerman. King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield. The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding. The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.
