King City Police Department Awarded $50,000 Grant to Deter Unsafe Behaviors, Increase Safety on Roads

 

King City, Calif. – The King City Police Department will increase patrols throughout the community and

provide other traffic safety programs to help reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on roads.

“This grant funding allows us to support our ongoing traffic safety efforts in the community,” King City

Police Department, Sergeant, Anthony Shaw said. “Our intent is to stop the most unlawful and

dangerous behaviors that put people at risk and create an environment where everyone feels safe

traveling.”

The grant will provide additional programs and resources, including:

· DUI checkpoints and patrols focused on stopping suspected impaired drivers.

· High visibility distracted driving enforcement operations targeting drivers in violation of

California’s hands-free cell phone law.

· Enforcement operations focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of

people biking or walking at risk.

· Enforcement operations focused on top violations that cause crashes: speeding, failure to yield,

stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.

· Community presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving,

speeding, bicycle, and pedestrian safety.

· Collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.

· Officer training and/or recertification: Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside

Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

The grant program will run through September 2023.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Attempted Homicide Shooting Incident in King City on September 29

  The King City Police Department received a report of gunshots heard in the area of the 600 block of Sycamore Street at around 1 am on Sunday, September 29. While enroute, the King City PD was advised that 2 victims were transported to Mee Memorial Hospital by private vehicle to be treated for gunshot wounds.   Upon arrival, officers were told that a single unknown suspect opened the gate to a fenced yard and fired 10 rounds into a crowd attending a party. 2 individuals were struck by the gunfire, after-which the suspect fled on foot.  The suspect was described as wearing a dark colored hoodie and pants. The 2 victims are a 16-year-old juvenile male who was shot 3 times and an 18-year-old male who was shot 1 time.  Both victims were transported to Natividad Hospital from Mee Memorial and are currently listed in stable condition. 3 Vehicle Wreck on Highway 101 Outside of King City on December 26

  A 3 vehicle accident happened on Highway 101 Northbound near the Central Avenue exit outside of King City at 12:07 pm on Thursday afternoon, December 26. One of the vehicles overturned as a result of the crash. Minor injuries were reported from the collision.
