Assemblymembers Robert Rivas and Blanca Rubio Announce Legislation to Uplift Single Parents and Promote Healthy Child Development

Sacramento, CA— Assemblymembers Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) and Blanca Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) introduced legislation to automatically exempt single parents receiving CalWORKs welfare benefits from “welfare-to-work” requirements for the first three years of their child’s life. Welfare-to-work programs, such as looking for a job or studying for professional licensure exams, require significant investments of time, imposing severe limitations on the time CalWORKs single parents can spend caring for their children. Extensive research has shown that a lack of adequate care and parental contact during the critical early years of childhood is strongly correlated with worse health, educational, and other outcomes later in life. Under existing law, single parents only receive a six-to-twelve-month exemption, which they must formally request, from welfare-to-work requirements after giving birth to, fostering, or adopting a child. “A single parent deserves the same rights as anyone else to care

There were widespread closures of fairs due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and the federal government still needs to help these vital groups recover their losses and rebuild their operations. Federal relief would allow fairs to support our agricultural producers, inspire the next generation of farmers, and provide services to our communities in times of emergency. “In the last couple years, fairs across the country, including in our counties on the Central Coast, were prevented from opening or operating at full capacity because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Congressman Panetta. “That’s why we are continuing our effort

The letter again reiterates the Congressman’s support for a transfer of the property to a nonprofit organization or consortium of marine and education organizations committed to upholding the requirements of the Local Coastal Program. “My goal is to make sure that the federal government listens to the concerns of the local residents here in Pacific Grove when it comes to the sale of the NOAA building to a private buyer,” sai

SPCA Monterey County Rescuing Dozens of Red-Tailed Hawks

Since December 1st, SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center has rescued 38 emaciated red-tailed hawks. The hawks are mostly young males, close to one year old. They are found throughout Monterey County from San Ardo to Carmel, as well as in San Benito County which does not have a wildlife rescue center. The young hawks are found on the ground, emaciated and unable to fly. We do not know if this is due to a food shortage or poor hunting skills for birds spending their first winter on their own. By the time the birds are so emaciated that they cannot fly or evade capture, this is a critical emergency situation. They are rushed to our wildlife hospital, but sadly most are too weak to survive the night. All the rescued hawks are given a full examination and rehydrating fluids, and are slowly introduced to a liquid diet. If needed, our skilled wildlife rescue technicians also provide supplemental heat and medications. Many of the young hawks are placed on a
