Hundreds of bottles of wine were sampled and judged at the 25th annual Monterey International Wine Competition at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 3. Chief Wine Judge Rich Cook said that almost 800 different wines were entered into the competition and were spread across 6 tables for judges to sample. Cook said that industry experts from all aspects of the wine business were on hand judging many different types of wines and their judging was determined by sight, aromas, acid balance, how well the wine finishes and integration of all of the elements which would involve fruit, spice, wood tones or something else. The judges then would decide on what a wine should be awarded. Cook said that silver, gold and platinum medals were awarded. The Greenfield Library celebrated Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on Friday, March 2 in a big way. Greenfield Mayor Pro Temp Avelina Torres and Councilwoman Nely Martinez both read Dr. Seuss books to kids and afterwards there was cake for everyone along with a raffle and prizes. 

A lot of kids took part in a Battle of the Books competition at Santa Lucia Elementary School in King City during Read Across America Day on Friday, March 2. It was also Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Winning the competition was the Speed Readers 30 to 15 over Reader Fever. Teacher Brannon Larson presented questions to both teams consisting of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. 

The Soledad Police Department responded to Vosti Avenue and 5th Street in Soledad for a possible victim of a shooting sometime after 8:30 am on Saturday morning, March 3.  When officers arrived, a man was found lying on the front yard of a corner home.  The victim was taken by ambulance to Natividad Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  Police said several witnesses called to report what sounded like multiple gunshots on the 1600 block of Vosti Avenue. Witnesses said that the possible suspect is a thin Hispanic man who is approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a gray hooded top, a white or light gray bandanna covering his face and he was wearing dark gray or black shorts. The  Soledad Police Department are investigating the homicide and are asking anyone with information to call 831-223-5121.

Gonzales Little League Baseball Opening Day is on Saturday, March 3 at 12 pm which can be heard on AM 1490 and 104.9-FM KRKC Country, weather permitting. 

Dr. David Phillips retired from his dental practice in King City on February 22 after a 40 year career. Dr. Phillips has had quite a career since he relocated to King City in the late 1970s from the Los Angeles area to begin his dental practice and serve patients in South Monterey County. Dr. Phillips mentioned that the decision to retire wasn’t an easy one because of all of the relationships he's built with people over the years by trying to restore and maintain their good dental health, but stated that he is looking forward to his retirement by spending more time with his wife, grandchildren and dogs at his home in Lockwood. Dr. Phillips indicated that the records of his patients will be transferred over to Dr. George Ingham in Greenfield. 

Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated will be holding their General Membership Meeting Luncheon on Tuesday, March 6 at 11:30 am at Lawrence’s Restaurant in King City. The cost to attend the Luncheon is $15. SMC Republican Women Federated Secretary Kathy Forgnone says that there will be a very good lineup of speakers at this luncheon for people to listen to and meet that include Mark Meuser who is a native Californian, a small business owner and an attorney who is running for Secretary of State along with Robert Poythress who is a Madera County Supervisor, who previously served 3 terms on the Madera City Council and was Madera's 1st elected Mayor. Poythress also owns a local farm and is a small business owner of a hardware store. Poythress is a native of the Central Valley and is running for State Senate in the 12th District.
