Company Pays Civil Penalty for Misleading Environmental Advertising

SALINAS, California - Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announces that her

office, along with 10 other District Attorney’s Offices in California, have resolved a misleading

advertising case against Venus Laboratories, Inc., which does business as “Earth Friendly Products”

under the brand name “ECOS.” As part of the settlement, the company will pay $176,110 in civil

penalties and costs to resolve the alleged violations.

ECOS manufactures, markets, and sells cleaning products to California consumers, including through

retail stores and online platforms. ECOS also advertises its products through its website, www.ecos.com.

This action arises from allegations that the company marketed and sold laundry and dishwasher

detergent sheet products labeled as “plastic free” and “zero plastic,” when the products contained plastic

in the form of polyvinyl alcohol (“PVA”), also referred to as “PVOH.” ECOS further represented that

these products were biodegradable when prosecutors allege that they are not likely to break down during

wastewater treatment processes in sewer or septic systems before entering the ocean or other waterways.

As public concern over plastic pollution continues to grow, consumers are increasingly seeking to

purchase products that they believe offer environmental benefits. Misrepresenting or overstating such

environmental attributes misleads consumers and violates California law.

This case was resolved by a team of California prosecutors, including the District Attorney’s Offices of

Monterey, Alameda, Fresno, Napa, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Shasta,

and Sonoma.
