Click It, Don't Risk It! CHP Thanksgiving Safety Reminder; CHP Officers will Focus on Seatbelt use, Impaired Driving and Safe Travel During One of the Year’s Busiest Weekends

 

SACRAMENTO — As the holiday season gets underway, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reminds motorists that the simplest way to stay safe on the road this Thanksgiving weekend is to buckle up before every trip.


 


The CHP will begin its Thanksgiving Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP) at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, and continue through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 30. Throughout the enforcement period, CHP officers will be on patrol to help ensure everyone obeys traffic laws, wears a seat belt and drives safely.


“Thanksgiving is a time to be with family and friends, not to mourn a preventable tragedy. Seat belts remain one of the most effective tools for saving lives on our roadways. Taking just two seconds to buckle up could be the decision that saves your life or the life of someone you love.”

During last year’s Thanksgiving HEP, 36 people died in crashes across California. Within CHP jurisdiction, 14 vehicle occupants were killed and six of them were not wearing a seat belt. CHP officers also made more than 1,100 arrests for driving under the influence during the same 102-hour holiday enforcement effort.



Over the past five years, CHP officers have issued an average of more than 26,000 citations annually for seat belt violations. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, when worn correctly, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury for front-seat passengers by 45%.



Whether you’re driving across town or across the state, the CHP urges all motorists and passengers to buckle up, drive sober and obey the speed limit. The holidays are meant for celebration and connection — not loss. Protect yourself and your loved ones by making seat belt use a non-negotiable part of every trip.

King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.

Homicide of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad Under Investigation

  APRIL 8, 2025 SOLEDAD, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an alleged homicide of incarcerated person 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza which occurred on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad. At approximately 5:39 p.m., staff observed incarcerated persons 30-year-old Edgar Frayre and 32-year-old Nicolas Young attacking Joseph Mendoza with improvised weapons on the dayroom floor in Facility C. Staff immediately responded and issued several verbal commands to stop, which were ignored. Staff then deployed multiple less-than-lethal use-of-force options, which ultimately quelled the incident. Frayre and Young were secured in handcuffs. Medical aid was initiated for Mendoza; however, he was pronounced deceased at 6:10 p.m. Medical evaluations were conducted on Frayre and Young, and no serious injuries were reported.
