Family Fun Takes Center Stage During Big Week at the California Rodeo Salinas; From Carnival Rides to Parades and Rodeo-Themed Activities, there’s something for every kid July 11–20!

 

SALINAS, CA – The California Rodeo Salinas is more than just world-class rodeo—it’s a weeklong celebration packed with family-friendly activities for kids of all ages. Beginning on Friday, July 11th, and running through Sunday, July 20, families can enjoy various engaging events designed to entertain, inspire, and celebrate the next generation of rodeo fans.

California Rodeo Salinas Carnival
July 11–20, 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM daily at 295 Sun Way in Salinas
Presented by Chick-fil-A North Salinas
The week kicks off with the Rodeo Carnival. Admission and parking are only $5 each. Unlimited ride wristbands are available for $30 until July 10th. From July 11th through 20th, wristbands are $35 at the gate. Purchase online at carodeo.com until July 10th or onsite once the carnival is open.

Get Ready to Rodeo at Northridge Mall
July 12, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Northridge Mall
This free, family-friendly event will feature rodeo-themed fun, including a chance to meet DUDE the Rodeo Mascot, try your hand at dummy roping, spin the prize wheel, and win tickets, swag, and more. Join us near the Round 1 entrance and help us celebrate the start of Big Week in Salinas.

Kiddie Kapers Parade
Sunday, July 13 at 3:00 PM in Salinas City Center
Presented by Bay & Basin Insurance Services
Approximately 1,000 children will parade from the Salinas Recreation Center (320 Lincoln Avenue) to the Steinbeck Center (1 Main Street). This year’s theme is "Once Upon a Rodeo" and will be led by Grand Marshal Jaizel Mendoza, a seven-year-old cancer patient.

Mutton Busting
July 16–20 during Bull Riding and Rodeo performances
Presented by Pacific Valley Bank
Young riders compete in this crowd-favorite event during each performance. Entries are selected each spring via carodeo.com.

McDonald’s Kids Corral
July 17–20, open daily during the Rodeo at the Salinas Sports Complex
No additional fee with Rodeo admission
Open at 5:00 PM Thursday and Friday, and at noon Saturday and Sunday, the Kids Corral features hands-on activities and entertainment for young attendees.

Rodeo Entertainer Matt Merritt

Stick Horse Race
Thursday, July 17 at 4:30 PM on the track surrounding the arena
Presented by Black Bear Diner
Children ages 3 to 8 must bring their own stick horse and compete before the evening rodeo performance.

Kids Dummy Roping
Friday, July 18 at approximately 3:30 PM (following slack) in the arena
Presented by Resistol and Cactus Ropes
Open to kids ages 6 to 13. Sign up online by noon on July 18. Participants must bring their own rope. Prizes will be awarded for 1st through 3rd place in each age group.

Special Buckaroos Rodeo
Saturday, July 19 at 12:00 PM in the arena

Twenty-four local students with disabilities will participate in adaptive rodeo activities with assistance from professionals.

Fiestas del Rodeo
Sunday, July 20, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the north end of the midway

This family-oriented event, included with admission, will feature mariachi music, traditional Mexican games, and autograph signings by Escaramuza riders.

As a not-for-profit organization, the California Rodeo Association is dedicated to preserving the traditions of the California Rodeo Salinas and the Western way of life while fostering community involvement and cultural heritage. Through its annual Rodeo and year-round operations at the Salinas Sports Complex, the Association supports local nonprofits and community groups. Fatal 3 Vehicle Accident Involving Wrong Way Driver on Highway 101 Outside of King City on January 10

  A fatal multi-vehicle collision happened on Saturday night, January 10 at 9:51 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 outside of King City. According to the King City CHP a 2016 Toyota Tacoma driven by 65-year-old Paul Lee Cooper of Otis, Oregon was heading the wrong way going southbound in the northbound lanes south of Jolon Road, while a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by 33-year-old Dinora Maribel Gomez of Salinas was heading northbound on Highway 101 south of Jolon Road in the #1 lane and a Honda Accord driven by 36-year-old Ignacio Sangerman of King City was also traveling northbound on Highway 101 south of Jolon Road but was in the #2 lane. Monterey County DA Releases Preliminary Information Concerning an Officer Involved Shooting Incident that Occurred Outside of Soledad on December 16

  SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni on December 19 released preliminary information concerning the officer involved shooting (OIS) which occurred at about 1:20 a.m. outside the city of Soledad on December 16, 2025. Just before 1:00 a.m., Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputy Carlos Pina, who has been a peace officer for 10 years all with MCSO, and Deputy Blain Councilman, each in separate patrol cars, were dispatched to 32097 McCoy Road. A resident at the farm labor camp reported a suspicious individual with a handgun whose white Honda 4 door sedan was parked in space 18 at the complex. Before parking there, the suspect drove around and around, stopped in front of the reporting party’s (RP’s) truck, and got out. The RP could hear music. King City City Council Announces Selection of José Arreola as New City Manager

  January 7, 2025-Following an extensive recruitment process, José Arreola has been selected by the King City City Council to be its next City Manager. Arreola will replace Steve Adams, who is retiring after serving in the position for the past 10 years. Arreola was selected from 31 applicants and 8 finalists for the position. The King City City Council will formally consider the proposed city manager contract at its meeting on Tuesday night, January 13. Arreola's first day on the job is scheduled to be February 23.    José Arreola has a distinguished career of serving the community with a particular commitment to youth. He has worked for the City of Salinas for 12 years as their Community Safety Program Manager, Community Safety Administrator and Assistant to the City Manager.
