Steve Adams, the City Manager of King City announced on May 19 the appointment of Robert Masterson as the City’s next Chief of Police effective on June 27. Masterson will replace Police Chief James Hunt, who recently announced that he will be retiring on June 26.
According to City Manager Adams, “I believe Bob Masterson is uniquely and highly qualified to lead our Police Department in the future to continue the great progress we’ve made in establishing a model police department and safer community. We are fortunate to have someone with Captain Masterson’s experience, expertise, proven leadership and high ethical standards to step in upon Chief Hunt’s departure”. City Manager Adams added, “Chief Hunt has been an amazing Chief and I would like to express my appreciation for his tremendous service to King City.”
Masterson has an extensive career in law enforcement, including 20 years with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, Director of Reaching Youth - a faith-based non-profit organization, 8 years as Chief of Police for the College of Sequoias Community College District, City of King Chief of Police from 2016 - 2020, Atascadero Chief of Police from 2021 to 2022, and Police Captain for the City of King since 2023. During his first tenure as King City Police Chief, Masterson was instrumental in rebuilding the King City Police Department staffing, policies, culture, and public trust; developing and implementing the Comprehensive Plan to End Youth Violence; and achieving major improvements in reducing crime and violence.
Mr. Masterson stated, "I am honored to once again serve as the Chief of Police for King City. During my time away, I have gained valuable experience and a broader perspective, which I now bring back to the department. I look forward to leading our team, reconnecting with the community, and building upon the strong foundation that has already been established within the City and Police Department."
