“TAMC Seeks Public Input at Workshops to Help Develop a Monterey County-Wide Plan to Make Streets Safer for All Users”

 

MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) announced they are hosting a series of workshops seeking community input on developing a “Monterey County Regional Vision Zero Plan,” to help make local streets and roadways safer.


 


According to Todd Muck, TAMC’s Executive Director, "Over the past five years, 230 lives have been lost on Monterey County roadways. We need the community's help to develop a Monterey County Regional Vision Plan aimed at eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for everyone."


 


The community is invited to attend a workshop to learn more about the plan and share where they would like to see safety improvements. Workshops will be held in May from 5:30 pm to 7 pm at the following locations throughout the county:


    Greenfield: Mon. May 12 at City Council Chambers

    Soledad: Tues. May 13 at Soledad Community Center

    Gonzales: Wed. May 14 at the Community Room at the Gonzales Police Station

    Marina: May 21 at Vince DiMaggio Park Community Building

    Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pacific Grove: Thursday, May 22 at Carmel City Council Chambers

    King City: Wednesday, May 28 at City Council Chambers

    Del Rey Oaks and Sand City: Thursday, May 29 at Del Rey Oaks City Council Chambers


 


The Monterey County Regional Vision Zero Action Plan will be a comprehensive county-wide safety action plan developed by TAMC in collaboration with partner agencies and other stakeholders to promote coordinated solutions to reduce fatalities and injuries due to traffic collisions.


 


The Plan will develop individual action plans for the ten jurisdictions that do not currently have an adopted plan (the Cities of Monterey, Salinas, and Seaside have already adopted or are currently developing Vision Zero or other safety plans). Caltrans District 5 and California Highway Patrol are participating in the plan, and both local roadways and state highways will be included.


 


In addition to action plans for each jurisdiction, the Plan will include recommendations for regional projects and programs that could be implemented by TAMC or partner agencies. The Plan will include recommendations for engineering projects as well as education and encouragement campaigns and policy and process changes, taking a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to improving traffic safety. The Monterey County Regional Vision Zero Plan is expected to be completed at the end of 2026.


 


Adoption of a Vision Zero Action Plan will make jurisdictions eligible for further funding to construct the improvements envisioned in the plan. The Plan will also help TAMC and local jurisdictions focus limited resources on areas with the greatest safety need.


 


The Monterey County Regional Vision Zero Plan is funded with a $640,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program and a local matching grant of $160,000 funded through the Service Authority for Freeways and Expressways (SAFE) Reserve funds provided by TAMC.

Background Information


 


Vision Zero is an international road traffic safety project that began in Sweden in 1997. Its objective is to develop a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all.

King City Man Arrested on January 6 for Rape, Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a Minor and Kidnapping

  According to King City Police Department, on December 30, 2024 a 17-year-old minor female victim reported that she had attended a party on the 100 Block of Bedford Circle on December 24, 2024. During the party, the suspect provided her with alcohol. He then pulled the victim into a bedroom, forcibly removed her clothing and had sexual intercourse with her against her will. This case was investigated by the King City Police Department Investigations Unit which resulted in the apprehension and arrest on January 6, 2025 of the suspect identified as 21-year-old Jesus Oseguera Briseno of King City. Briseno was also booked into the Monterey County Jail charged with Rape, Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a Minor and Kidnapping. Attempted Homicide Shooting Incident in King City on September 29

  The King City Police Department received a report of gunshots heard in the area of the 600 block of Sycamore Street at around 1 am on Sunday, September 29. While enroute, the King City PD was advised that 2 victims were transported to Mee Memorial Hospital by private vehicle to be treated for gunshot wounds.   Upon arrival, officers were told that a single unknown suspect opened the gate to a fenced yard and fired 10 rounds into a crowd attending a party. 2 individuals were struck by the gunfire, after-which the suspect fled on foot.  The suspect was described as wearing a dark colored hoodie and pants. The 2 victims are a 16-year-old juvenile male who was shot 3 times and an 18-year-old male who was shot 1 time.  Both victims were transported to Natividad Hospital from Mee Memorial and are currently listed in stable condition.
