Monterey County Sheriff Issues Statement Ahead of Elections

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto is joining the nations law enforcement associations in issuing a statement ahead of the

2024 Elections. She joins the Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA), the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), and the

Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) as they stand ready and united to ensure that Election Day 2024 is secure, safe, and

fair.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has prepared for this year’s election by receiving briefings from federal, state, and local

partners, sharing intelligence and threat information, holding conversations with election officials and elected officials to secure

the election process.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said, “It is important for everyone to feel safe when it comes to exercising their right to

vote. We will have deputies patrolling our election facilities as well as conducting patrols in and around polling places

throughout Monterey County.” She further stated that it is important for the community to help ensure a safe election by

reporting suspicious activity at polling places or in and around the county ballot box locations. “If you see something suspicious

or unusual that doesn’t look right, call in and report it immediately. Do not wait to report it later.”

The nations law enforcement associations state in part that it is critical to share information and intelligence related to the safety

of polling places, ballot box collection points, the transportation of ballots for counting and certification, as well as any post-

election activities. Irrespective of the outcome of any of the offices up for election this year, law enforcement will work through

any issue related to pre-election, Election Day, and post-election day activities to ensure public safety is paramount.

“We will do all that we can, with help from our communities, to ensure a safe election day,” said Nieto.

Anyone wishing to report suspicious or unlawful activity in or around polling places is encouraged to call the Monterey County

Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 831-755-5111. If you are witnessing an emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately.
