City of King is Hosting a Riverbed Wildfire Prevention Plan Community Meeting on February 28

Reducing hazards of fire and floods in the riverbed area adjacent to the community has been an ongoing objective for the City of King.  The City has made significant progress in obtaining permits to perform annual silt removal to reduce flooding and conducting a number of debris removal activities.

The City was also recently successful in obtaining a grant from CAL FIRE to prepare a Riverbed Wildfire Prevention Plan, which will lead to implementation of future wildfire prevention measures.  The City has hired EMC Planning Group and Deer Creek Resources to assist in preparing the Riverbed Wildfire Prevention Plan.  It will include a vegetation management plan that identifies ways to minimize future wildfires along the Salinas River and San Lorenzo Creek Corridor.

As part of the plan preparation, the City has scheduled a Community Meeting on Wednesday, February 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the King City Fire Station, 422 Bassett Street.  The purpose of the Community Meeting is to introduce the project, review recently created mapping along the project area, discuss public concerns and public recommendations, and provide a schedule of various steps of the plan preparation.

Everyone is encouraged to attend.  Spanish translation will be available.  The Community Meeting will provide an opportunity to:

·         Give your input on areas of concern and ideas to mitigate wildfire impacts within portions of the Salinas River and San Lorenzo Creek.

·         Hear about the progress and timelines of the City’s Riverbed Wildfire Prevention Plan from the City’s project consultants, EMC Planning Group and Deer Creek Resources.

·         Learn about wildfire mitigation best practices and view preliminary vegetation and fire behavior mapping.

Contact City Hall at 831-385-3281 if you have any questions.

Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
