Hartnell College Community College District Governing Board Fills District 6 Seat

SALINAS, Calif. – The Hartnell Community College District Governing Board made a provisional appointment of Sonia Jaramillo as the new District 6 trustee to fill a vacancy left by Erica Padilla-Chavez, who filed a letter with the Monterey County Board of Education on November 1, 2023 stating that she would resign her board position effective November 2, 2023.


Since 2015, Jaramillo has served as senior director for Monterey County Office of Education’s Early Learning Program (Head Start and State Preschools), overseeing a $32 million budget and supervising more than 150 employees. Jaramillo has credentials in School Administration, Reading Specialist and Bilingual Teaching, and fluency in Spanish.


In accordance with Education Code sec. 5091, Jaramillo was provisionally appointed following a series of interviews and a board vote during its Tuesday, November 21 meeting. The Gonzales resident was 1 of 3 candidates who expressed interest in representing Area 6, which includes parts of Northeast Salinas, Chualar, Gonzales, and Soledad. Jaramillo will serve until the next election in November 2024.


Unless a petition calling for a special election containing a sufficient number of signatures is filed in the Office of the Monterey County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment, it shall become an effective appointment. Any such petitions must conform to the requirements listed in sec. 5091(f).



The public is encouraged to attend governing board meetings at 5 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Main Campus, 411 Central Ave., Salinas, Building C, Room 124 (Student Center/Steinbeck Hall), except where noted.

King City City Council Announces Selection of José Arreola as New City Manager

  January 7, 2025-Following an extensive recruitment process, José Arreola has been selected by the King City City Council to be its next City Manager. King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.
