Road and Lane Closures on Highway 101 and Arroyo Seco Road in South Monterey County for the Week of September 10

 

MONTEREY COUNTY –Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for South Monterey County from Sunday,  September 10 through Saturday,  September 16. 


Highway 101: Main Street/Chualar Street: September 10 – September 15

One-way traffic controls will be in place along eastbound and westbound Main Street/Chualar Street at the Grant Street intersection and at the southbound off ramp of Highway 101 to Main Street for striping operations work from 9 pm to 6 am.


Highway 101:  Northbound Camp Roberts Rest Areas: Long-Term

There will be full closure of the Camp Roberts Rest Areas on northbound Highway 101 for work to upgrade the facility from 10 am to 12 pm.


Highway 101: First Steet – Jolon Road: September 11 – September 15

There will alternating lane closures on northbound and southbound Highway 101, as well as full closure of the northbound and southbound on and off ramps of Highway 101 between First Street and Jolon Road for guardrail and utility work from 8 am to 4 pm. There will also be alternating lane closures along First Street and Broadway.


Arroyo Seco Road: September - December

Repair work along Arroyo Seco Road in south Monterey County will begin in September to repair  damage that occurred during the heavy rains and flooding in March. The repair work will occur at mile post 2.5 and at mile post 4.2. The road is open to residents who live along that portion of road, and they will be allowed access in and out of the area.


Once the repair work is completed, it will allow for the reopening of Arroyo Seco Campground, which was closed by the US Forest Service.



Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.

Homicide of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad Under Investigation

  APRIL 8, 2025 SOLEDAD, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an alleged homicide of incarcerated person 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza which occurred on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad. At approximately 5:39 p.m., staff observed incarcerated persons 30-year-old Edgar Frayre and 32-year-old Nicolas Young attacking Joseph Mendoza with improvised weapons on the dayroom floor in Facility C. Staff immediately responded and issued several verbal commands to stop, which were ignored. Staff then deployed multiple less-than-lethal use-of-force options, which ultimately quelled the incident. Frayre and Young were secured in handcuffs. Medical aid was initiated for Mendoza; however, he was pronounced deceased at 6:10 p.m. Medical evaluations were conducted on Frayre and Young, and no serious injuries were reported.
