Every year, SPCA Monterey County rescues over 1,000 stray dogs and cats in addition to the thousands of pets and wildlife who come to them in different ways. Sadly, 87% of those stray pets arrive with no form of identification - no collar, tag, or microchip - making it incredibly difficult to reunite them with their families.
To help reduce this number, the SPCA is holding 2 free microchipping events for all cats, dogs, and rabbits. The events will take place on Saturday, August 5, and Saturday, August 12, from 11 am to 2 pm at the SPCA.
“It is heartbreaking to see a pet who is healthy and well-loved arrive with no identification,” says Ben Shaw, SPCA Shelter Manager. “We post their photos online and search through lost pet reports, but often no owner comes looking for them. If this free microchip event reunites even just one pet, it will be completely worth it.”
A microchip is a small, electronic chip about the size of a grain of rice. It contains a unique identification number that is tied to your information.
In addition to microchips, the SPCA will also have free collars and tags available while supplies last.
“Collars and tags are great at helping reunite pets quickly, but collars can slip off,” says Ben. “Many owners tell us they had just removed their pet’s collar when their pet went missing. By providing both microchips and collars, we hope more pets can be reunited with their families without even needing to come to shelters.”

SPCA Monterey County is your nonprofit, independent, donor-supported humane society that has been serving the animals and people of Monterey County since 1905. The SPCA is not a chapter of any other agency and does not have a parent organization. They shelter homeless, neglected and abused pets and livestock, and provide humane education and countless other services to the community. They are the local agency you call to investigate animal cruelty, rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife, and aid domestic animals in distress.
