Southbound US 101 Camp Roberts Rest Area Reopens on August 22

MONTEREY COUNTY – The southbound US 101 Camp Roberts Safety Roadside Rest Area reopened to the public at 10 am on Tuesday, August 22 following an extensive renovation of the facility. Upgrades include a complete replacement of the wastewater treatment system to improve operational efficiency and to protect groundwater quality as well as major upgrades to the electrical system to support new more energy efficient equipment.

The Electric Vehicle Charge Station will remain off-line pending delivery and installation of a new cell signal power module. However, upgrades to the solar powered EV station have also been made including the addition of a second Level 2 Charger.

The northbound Camp Roberts Safety Roadside Rest Area will remain closed pending completion of similar renovations delayed by material deliveries. No date for reopening of the northbound facility is as yet confirmed.

The southbound renovation project replaced deteriorating concrete septic tanks with larger fiberglass tanks, added equalization tanks which provide buffer during peak use, added media filters, new piping, and expanded and improved leach field capacity.

The project also added a new automated infrastructure monitoring system. This will allow maintenance crews to track water, wastewater, and electrical system operations more efficiently and to stay ahead of issues and allow for a variety of adjustments to be made remotely. These upgrades are designed to keep the rest areas open on a more consistent basis.

Landscaping renovations included downsizing lawn areas and upgrades to the ‘smart’ irrigation system to support water conservation. New shade shelters have also been added to the picnic tables.

Work began on this project in May 2021. Significant delays in material availability and fabrication of customized equipment such as fiberglass tanks and electrical switchgear have contributed to the lengthy construction closure.

The contractor for this $4.2 million construction project is Newton Construction and Management of San Luis Obispo, CA.

Work is continuing on reopening the Gaviota Rest Areas near US 101 in Santa Barbara County following major winter storm damage which occurred in January 2023.  A reopening date will be announced when repairs on the Gaviota northbound facility are complete.

The southbound Gaviota Rest Area will remain closed through the fall for the safety of the traveling public due to ongoing traffic control related to emergency highway repair work.  Caltrans will maintain one lane open in this restricted corridor. The southbound rest area is being used as a staging area to expedite completion of the highway repairs.

The contractor for this $4.6 million project at Gaviota is Specialty Construction of San Luis Obispo, CA.

Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
